Hardware tracker IDC reported today that the Android OS was on 80 percent of the smartphones shipped in the third quarter, globally. Quarterly shipments are not the same as sales to consumers. However, they are directionally consistent with sales.

Losing share vs. a year ago, the iPhone captured just under 13 percent of all smartphone shipments. And, Windows Phone grew to 3.6 percent in Q3 from 2 percent of shipments last year.

Windows Phone’s shipments share grew 156 percent compared to the same period a year ago. Nokia accounted for more than 93 percent of those handsets shipped during the quarter. By comparison, BlackBerry saw a dramatic decline from 4.1 percent market share to less than 2 percent.

IDC said that larger screen phone-tablet hybrid devices represented 21 percent of smartphone sales overall. That’s up from 3 percent a year before. The company attributed Apple’s inability to capture more share to the absence of a larger-screen iPhone. Apple is reportedly working on two larger-screen models to be released next year.

These data also reinforce Microsoft’s decision to buy Nokia’s hardware division. If Nokia were to have embraced Android it would have posed an existential threat to Windows Phone, given the lack of non-Nokia Windows Phone sales.
