Google is planning a second campus in Mountain View called “BayView.”

Vanity Fair magazine got the scoop in an article that includes an interesting architect’s sketch of the new Googleplex (shown above).

According to the article, the BayView complex:

  • will be built in Mountain View, but closer to San Francisco Bay
  • will have nine “bent rectangle” buildings totaling 1.1 million square feet, all of which will be connected by bridges
  • will have greenery on some roofs
  • will keep Googlers in close proximity; no one “will be more than a two-and-a-half-minute walk from any other”
  • will have plenty of cafés

There’s no mention, though, of how far Google is in the process of developing the new Googleplex — no mention of any applications that have been submitted, reviews that will need to be done by local authorities, etc. A Google spokesperson shared this statement with us:

We are beginning construction on our new Bayview Campus, which is a key to our growth and another sign of our commitment to the area. As this project progresses, we’ll continue to work closely with NASA, the community and the City of Mountain View.

The NASA reference isn’t clear to me, aside from the fact that NASA has its Ames Research Center in Mountain View, very close to Moffett Federal Airfield. You can see Ames on this Google Map. There’s a pretty big, empty plot of land to the north of the research center and in plain view of San Francisco Bay; I’m only speculating, but that could be BayView’s eventual home. Google currently has its fleet of corporate aircraft at Moffett Field, but is working on plans for an $82 million private terminal at San Jose International Airport.

Along with Google’s planned London building, BayView will be the first built-by-Google building that the company occupies. Google is working with NBBJ, the international architecture firm that’s also building new headquarters for the likes of Amazon and Samsung.
