    Great post Bryson – thanks!

Quick question. When you speak of the letters of the alphabet you say that the Planner gives “you a breakdown of search volume for all of these broad-matched keywords by device.”

However, the [?] info link at the top of the “Avg. monthly searches” column of the search volume results (which is what we’re seeing in all your screenshots, right?) says that “The average number of times people have searched for this exact keyword based on the date range and targeting settings that you’ve selected.” And the “more” link on that info panel says “Keep in mind that historical stats like average monthly searches are only shown for exact match, and goes on to say “Traffic estimates like clicks and cost, on the other hand, do take into account keyword match types.”

Could this account for your observation that when you searched “for Facebook exact match and Facebook phrase match the results were the same”?

I’m genuinely askin, not tellin’, as I’m puzzled why I’m not able to replicate your output. That is, the search volume report shows any keyword I enter without brackets or quotes, no matter what I enter. Your screenshot under point 3, for example, shows this clearly in the “Keyword (by relevance)” column:

    [coffee]

But I’m not able to produce that result no way, no how. If I enter this into the “Get search volume…” dialog:
    [coffee]
    “coffee”
    coffee

… the results the Planner shows me are:
    coffee
    coffee
    coffee
    (and all with identical metrics).

Perhaps they’ve changed this since you authored your post – perhaps to remove possible confusion about this being an actual report by match type? Or I’m missing a step that’s preventing me from being able to generate [coffee] in the search volume report (match type differences, of course, do appear in the traffic estimate report). Or perhaps – always a strong possibility – I’m losing my mind? :)

    Thanks!

Thanks, Aaron! Great question, actually. My guess is that you’re using the first tool that says “search for new keyword and ad group ideas” and not the second one that says “Get search volume for a list of keywords…”. The first tool defaults at exact match but the second one allows you to enter your match type.

Is that it? If not, I’m also puzzled. :)
