Introduced just this Wednesday, Google’s streaming media dongle Chromecast is an immediate hit. The device has sold out on Amazon and BestBuy. There’s a two to three week shipping wait time in the Google Play store. In addition an introductory Netflix promotion proved so popular it has been stopped.

Chromecast sells out

Amazingly, there are already 100 reviews of the device on Amazon (six more than when I took the above screenshot just about an hour ago). Danny Sullivan offers a detailed comparison of Chromecast vs. Apple TV and Roku.

The popularity of Chromecast is driven by its simplicity (vs. Google TV) as well as its rock-bottom price ($35). Although the company has said that Chromecast and Google TV will co-exist, Chromecast is the practical replacement for Google TV.
