The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project has released new survey based findings about Twitter usage in the US. Overall 15 percent of online adults say they use Twitter, with 8 percent doing so daily. That compares with 13 percent who reported being Twitter users last year. Yet the number of daily Twitter users has doubled since May 2011 and quadrupled since Pew began doing surveys about Twitter in 2010. Mobile advertising will come in somewhere around $2.5 to $3.0 billion in the US this year. However Kleiner Perkins' Mary Meeker, who is a former Morgan Stanley analyst, says the opportunity is roughly $20 billion. The Facebook IPO has been a disaster for the social network, not just financially. BrandKeys, a brand and customer engagement consultancy, reports that the networking giant dropped from #1 to #5 in the Social Networking Category in their Customer Loyalty Engagement Index.  The index polls over 49,000 consumers, 83 categories and 600 brands. Echoing comments that he made earlier this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said again on Tuesday that a deeper integration of Facebook into Apple products might be on the way. Cook appeared at the D10 Conference last night and told Walt Mossberg and KaraSwisher that Apple has "great appreciation" and "great respect" for Facebook. While Twitter's performance is leaps and bounds above their previous "fail whale" days, it will only get faster.  In a blog post yesterday, the Twitter engineering team announced that they have reviewed their entire technology stack in a mission to optimize the site's speed. The confusion and cacophony around mobile payments, it seems, grows louder with each new product release or startup. Most people would consider mobile payments to be in their infancy. However a report from Gartner projects mobile payments this year will reach a massive $171.5 billion on a global basis. Last year mobile payments were roughly $106 billion according to the firm. Bitly has rolled out a major overhaul today, expanding its service beyond URL shortening into something that looks like its own social network, with bits of Stumbleupon and Delicious.com in the mix, too.
