google-street-view-car Despite assurances to the contrary, Google told the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) today that it still has some of the WiFi payload data that it's Street View cars collected in 2010. That data may include personal information such as usernames, passwords and email addresses that Google collected via unsecured WiFi networks. Google's collection of such data has sparked numerous governmental investigations around the world -- some of which are still in progress. Google had previously promised the UK government and public that it had deleted all of the data. But Google attorne [...]

Marketing Biz: Nextdoor Neighbors, Facebook Search Ads & GoodData

While Q2 results for Zynga and Facebook took center stage, efforts by Foursquare and Nextdoor continue to make hyper-local look like a real future instead of a mirage. Zynga Takes Axe to Outlook, Spooks Facebook Investors Blaming its poor performance on a steep drop-off in players for its core Facebook money-makers, Zynga took an axe to its earnings forecasts, predicting 4 to 9 cents a share, down from a previous 23 to 29 cents. 5 Questions For Top Affiliate Manager Josh Spaulding

interview with josh spaulding If you had your own online business bringing in six figures annually, would you consider taking on an additional position working for someone else as their affiliate manager? My initial response is, "No way!".  At first, it doesn't make sense to me why I would work on growing another marketer's business when I could spend that same time continuing to grow my own business. But then I stop and think -- maybe someone who does choose to do this knows things I haven't taken into consideration. My questions led me to reach out to a fellow marketer I know who has done just that -- added "Af [...]

Remarketing Now Available With Google Analytics

google analytics Today Google Analytics announced that its tracking code will now enable AdWords customers to create remarketing lists based on certain audiences or users that show interest in specific products. This means that instead of adding the remarketing tag, websites that use Google Analytics can use their code. If you are not acquainted with the remarketing feature, here is a short explanation taken from an AdWords help article: Remarketing is a feature that lets you reach people who have previously visited your site, and show them relevant ads when they visit other sites on the Google Display Netwo [...]

Facebook’s “Recommendations Bar” Plugin Helps Visitors Find Content Within A Site

A new Facebook plug-in has been revealed, the "recommendations bar."  The bar can be installed on websites and will help match visitors with other content they may enjoy on the site.  User data (likes & shares) are utilized in order to provide visitors with the best possible recommendations. The bar will pop up in the bottom right side of the page and will show a few similar articles as well as a like button for the current page.   If a user does click on a recommended link from the bar, they are taken directly to that page on the website.  Facebook is reporting that in early tests [...]

Instagram Hits 80 Million Users, Loses Access To Part Of Twitter API

Instagram_logo Instagram, the social photo-sharing site that Facebook bought earlier this year for about $1 billion, says that it's now crossed the 80-million-user level. That user base has also shared nearly four billion photos, the company says. But those users will find a slightly less functional mobile app when they upgrade to the latest version. As TechCrunch is reporting, the "Find Friends" tool no longer supports Twitter. A user clicking the button to find friends via Twitter gets a pop-up message that, according to TechCrunch's screenshot, says: Unable to Find Friends Twitter no longer al [...]

Facebook Q2 Revenue Slightly Beats Expectations But With A Net Loss

Facebook Logo Facebook's Q2 revenues are out. In the run up to the earnings announcement there was critical speculation about the company's prospects. In terms of top-line revenues, Facebook beat analyst consensus estimates. Quarterly revenues were $1.184 billion vs. $895 million last year. However the company also reported a net loss of $157 million. Immediately after the release there was a mixed reaction in the financial community, with some arguing analyst expectations were managed to be artificially low. There was general disappointment among many with these results; however some are taking a "wait [...]

Yelp Rolls Out Improved iPhone App, Other Mobile Changes

yelp-featured In recognition that Yelp's traffic is increasingly mobile, the company is paying more and more attention to its mobile assets. Yelp is now rolling out an iPhone update that overhauls the business listing page. It offers a cleaner, more user-friendly experience. Below are "before" and "after" screenshots. The new profile page (second below) offers a stronger and visually simpler look, with key features and content made more readily accessible. By comparison the old profile page design looks like something of a mess. Another very nice feature, you can pull down the page to access p [...]

On Eve Of Olympics, Twitter Goes Down

twitter-logo-2012-new For the second time in about a month, Twitter is currently experiencing a prolonged outage. As best we can tell, the outage began around 11:30 am ET. Twitter posted earlier that its "engineers are currently working to resolve the issue," but offered no details about what has caused the problem. Many Twitter URLs are showing an error message like this: The timing of any outage is never good, but this one could be particularly embarrassing with the 2012 Summer Olympics already underway (some events) and the opening ceremony happening tomorrow. Twitter and NBC TV just announced a pr [...]

IAB UK Study: Interactivity Key With Tablet Ads

IABUK-Logo [caption id="attachment_17312" align="alignright" width="240" caption="Alex Kozloff, Senior Mobile Manager of IAB UK"][/caption] Consumers respond better to tablet ads that are interactive, but, so far, marketers are letting them down. That's the conclusion of a new study released by the Internet Advertising Bureau UK, and conducted by Ipsos in partnership with Renault and their agency, Publicis. “There is a clear expectation from consumers for tablet advertising to match the high quality of the overall tablet experience," said the IAB UK’s senior mobile manager, Alex Kozloff. "It i [...]

Caterina Fake Startup Pinwheel Forced To Change Name After Lawsuit

Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake's new location-based startup Pinwheel, which is still in private beta, is probably going to be forced to change its name. TechCrunch reported yesterday that a court in New York granted the similarly sounding Pinweel, a mobile photo-sharing site, a preliminary injunction. The central claim was trademark infringement. The main idea here is that the lesser-known but pre-existing Pinweel will be irreparably damaged by the potential consumer confusion over the two similar-sounding companies. The case is still in process but granting a preliminary injunction is a q [...]

The Three Most Underrated Internet Marketing Strategies Of 2012

internet-online-marketing-featured In the online marketing world, we seem to be regularly gripped by a passion for the next big thing, the hip new marketing tactic that everyone is trying. But some of the most effective methods are relatively unsung. They just chug along and deliver results. Email Marketing Email is the most underappreciated marketing channel. Everyone likes to talk about the sexiness and adventure of social media, but it’s email that truly has the most money-making potential. If Facebook was the email killer, it'd have killed email by now. It wasn’t until early 2010 that ZAGG started dedicating [...]

The “Real Estate” of Mobile Targeting: Location. Location. Lat-Long.

shutterstock_97523978-GPS The power of mobile lies in our ability to utilize the deep location-targeting technology available to focus advertising campaigns in a way no other medium has achieved before. There are a variety of location-based data signals available to the mobile industry which have shaped a diverse landscape of products and services. As in real estate, there is a home amid this data for every campaign. But the task at hand is in properly educating the industry on the various data “property types” available, and their unique characteristics. Mobile location data signals range from the more ge [...]

Pinterest Is Throwing A Summer Party To Build Community

pinterest-logo It's no secret that building a community -- if it's done right -- can help a business grow by creating loyal customers/users/fans. An active, dedicated community was (and is) Yelp's ticket to success when it launched in 2004, and Google is cloning Yelp's plan with its own local community efforts more recently. And now Pinterest is taking its own stab at community building. The company announced yesterday via Facebook that it'll host a summer party in San Francisco the week of August 13th. But it's not a wide-open, anyone's invited event. Users have to make a video explaining "how Pin [...]

Tips For An Effective Twitter Chat

twitter-to-do-featured Fourteen years before Twitter had its debut at SxSW,  professor of educational psychology and semiotician Gary Shank wrote a paper titled Abductive Multiloguing: The Semiotics of Navigating the Net, in which he describes the concept of the multilogue: “It is as if everyone who is interested in talking can all jump in at once, but still their individual voices can be clearly heard. (…) it is as if someone had started writing a piece, but before he/she gets too far, people are there magically in print to add to, correct, challenge, or extend the piece.“ I’ve yet to see a better descri [...]

Smartphone Adoption Gaining Momentum, Most First-Timers Go For Android

smartphones Measurement firm comScore today released some new survey data that show an increasing percentage of US feature phone owners are making the switch to smartphones when replacing their devices. As they do they overwhelmingly favor Android, followed by the iPhone and then Windows Phones. Just over 61 percent of first-time smartphone buyers opted for an Android phone compared with 25 percent who bought an iPhone. In a hopeful sign for Microsoft, 7 percent of those first time buyers (which is where the opportunity is for Windows Phones) chose the Microsoft OS. A smaller percentage of existing sma [...]
