Facebook “Relief Rally” Drives 19 Percent Gain After Upbeat Revenue Numbers

Call it a "relief rally." After Facebook's Q3 yesterday ($1.26 billion) beat consensus revenue estimates financial analysts changed their outlook on the company, with many shifting recommendations from "neutral" or "hold" to "buy." As a result Facebook saw its shares gain nearly 20 percent by the close of trading on the NASDAQ today. The big sigh of relief that could be heard all over Wall Street was about Facebook's mobile revenues and metrics. There were 604 million monthly active mobile users in Q3 according to the company, representing a steady month over month gain but a big 61 per [...]

Pinterest Debuts In comScore’s Top 50 Web Properties

pinterest-growth-featured You could see this one coming a mile away: Social image-sharing site Pinterest has finally cracked comScore's monthly list of the top 50 web properties in the U.S. The September Top 50 is just out, and Pinterest squeaked in at No. 50 with an estimated 25.3 million visitors. That puts it still slightly behind the declining MySpace (26 million estimated visitors). Instagram and Tumblr are also slightly ahead and Pinterest and stand at 44th and 42nd, respectively. Pinterest has been growing dramatically for at least a year, but its recent growth is no doubt being fueled by the site' [...]

iPad Mini A Great 7-Inch Tablet, But Price A Success Barrier

ipad-mini-featured Yesterday at the Apple iPad Mini launch event I had a chance to play with the smaller Apple tablet for about 10 minutes. It initially did look and feel to me, contrary to the statements of Apple SVP Phil Schiller, like a "shrunken iPad." However it was also immediately clear, as has been pointed out several times in other "hands on" reviews, that this is the best small tablet now on the market. Apple may have built the best-quality 7-inch category tablet but the ultimate success of the Mini is far from certain. Why? Its price. I have been harping on this for several months. Yesterday Dan [...]

Almost All B2B Marketers Do Content Marketing, But Only 36 Percent Think It’s Effective [STUDY]

content-marketing-200px Rare is the B2B marketer that's not using content marketing. But despite marketers' almost universal adoption of tactics like social media, article writing, blogs and infographics, only about one-third of B2B marketers say their content marketing efforts are effective. The numbers come from a new Content Marketing Institute/Marketing Profs study (sponsored by Brightcove) of more than 1,400 North American B2B marketers in August. The results might be seen as somewhat self-selective -- participants were made up of members/subscribers of CMI and Marketing Profs, which means these are marketers [...]

facebook-earnings-money-featured Facebook has released its Q3 financials and there are some solid numbers in the all-important advertising category. Overall, revenue was up to $1.26 billion for the quarter, a 32 percent gain over Q3 2011 and the third consecutive quarter of higher revenues. The company is reporting $1.09 billion in ad revenue for the quarter, a 36 percent increase year-over-year. That sum represents 86 percent of Facebook's total revenue. Perhaps most importantly, Facebook says that 14 percent of its ad revenue came from mobile. That's been something of an achilles heel for the company and it's i [...]

The Tablet Pricing Spectrum: Kindle Fire To Nexus 7 To iPad Mini

kindle-nexus-ipad-mini-featured As expected, Apple announced its new iPad Mini today. One of the key areas being watched was pricing. For the seriously price conscious, the iPad Mini doesn't look to be a game changer. Comparative prices below, along with technical specs pitting the iPad Mini against its rivals. Much was made during the event about how the experience of using the iPad beats Android tablets. The Nexus 7 was even used as a comparison of this. The Nexus 7 name was never said, but it was shown side-by-side with the iPad Mini. No doubt, many will choose the iPad over the Nexus 7 or other mini-tablets just f [...]

Live Blogging The Apple Mini Launch Event

Apple logo rainbow This morning Apple introduced the long-rumored iPad Mini, a new 13-inch retina display MacBook Pro and a new, thinner iMac. The iPad Mini starts (as rumored) at $329. Below is my live-blog of the event as it unfolded: For the first time in at least a couple of years, you'll be able to watch the event in real-time through a live stream on Apple's website. I'm now inside the very packed California theater in San Jose. I must say the event WiFi is very good, much better than my Verizon MiFi (allegedly 4G) hotspot. iPhone and iOS Update (Stats) Tim Cook has come on stage. He's providin [...]

Size Matters: Can Optimizing For Screen Size & Resolution Increase User Engagement And CTR?

Over the last decade, digital marketing and advertising have transformed significantly due to the rapid advancement of technology and analytical techniques. One aspect of technology which has changed significantly over time, and continues to carry a substantial impact, is the screen resolution of the marketer’s audience. Apple’s new Retina Display and the extensive marketing push surrounding it exemplifies the general trend of larger consumer electronics companies pushing for a high-resolution Web. Screen resolution is the measurement of how many pixels a computer monitor can display [...]

Report: iOS 6 Now On Majority Of Apple Mobile Devices

iOS 6 logo According to Chitika more than 60 percent of North American iOS devices/iPhones showing up on its network have iOS 6 installed. This stands in marked contrast to the Android ecosystem, where only 1.8 percent of devices are running the latest "Jelly Bean" version of the operating system. Only one quarter of Android handsets are running Android 4.0 ("Ice Cream Sandwich") or above. Most however are still on "Gingerbread," which is three generations old. This failure to update however is not about Android users; it's mostly about carrier control over Android. Within a week of its release [...]

Marissa Mayer Outlines Her Goals At Yahoo, Gives Frank Assessment Of Where Company Is Today

yahoo-mayer-featured Yahoo's first company earnings report under new CEO Marissa Mayer is still in progress; as I type this, new CFO Ken Goldman is reviewing Yahoo's financials on his first day at the company. But the big focus of the call is Mayer herself -- it's her first opportunity to speak to investors and the public about her plans to revitalize one of the internet's oldest, and still most popular, destinations. She began by telling listeners, "This job is tailor-made for me," and explained that Yahoo's core components - search, advertising, mobile, news and the home page -- are the same core component [...]

Yahoo Beats The Street For CEO Marissa Mayer’s First Earnings Report

yahoo-logo Yahoo reported its first quarterly earnings with Marissa Mayer at the helm. She got a bit of a gift as Yahoo beat consensus analyst estimates. The company's quarterly revenue grew roughly 2 percent from last year to $1.09 billion (vs. $1.07 billion). GAAP revenue was $1.2 billion. (See Matt McGee's related post about the earnings call.) Search and display revenue "stabilized" according to Mayer's quote in the press release: Yahoo! had a solid third quarter, and we are encouraged by the stabilization in search and display revenue. We're taking important steps to position Yahoo! for long- [...]

Instagram Translates Usernames For Twitter To Create More Accurate Tweets

Instagram_logo Many non-Apple smartphone users where delighted when Instagram was unleashed for Android earlier this year. Once they had finished installing the app, many users (like myself) were dismayed to find that their usual handle was already taken. This means that tagging me on Instagram would require @greg_finn while it would be my usual @gregfinn for networks like Twitter. When I Tweet would be sent from Instagram, the relevancy would be lost. Not anymore. This weekend Instagram began translating an Instagram Username into a Twitter username when a Tweet was sent.  The only trick is that use [...]
