Content Marketing In The Organization

[caption id="attachment_29206" align="alignright" width="218"] Image via Shutterstock[/caption] Does your organization have a content marketing department? If not, you’re hardly alone. While commitment to and investment in content marketing is skyrocketing year over year, there are far from hard and fast rules, and only barely emerging best practices, regarding how content fits into existing marketing functions. Content generally doesn’t exist as a department or even a job function; nonetheless, it’s everywhere. Content touches virtually every marketing function from corporate [...]

Marketing Day: December 24, 2012

Here's our daily recap of what happened in online marketing today, as reported on Marketing Land and other places across the web. From Marketing Land: Santa Tracking Explained: Why NORAD & Google Show Different Locations & Gifts DeliveredFormerly partners, both Google and NORAD are going head-to-head this year in Santa tracking. Already, people are wondering. Why are they showing Santa in different locations at the same time? What’s up with Google showing fewer presents delivered than NORAD displays. Santa Tracking Explained: Why NORAD & Google Show Different Locations & Gifts Delivered

norad google Formerly partners, both Google and NORAD are going head-to-head this year in Santa tracking. Already, people are wondering. Why are they showing Santa in different locations at the same time? What's up with Google showing fewer presents delivered than NORAD displays. Relax kids (or parents of kids). I have answers. I don't have official answers. I'm trying to obtain these, really. But the Google press office is closed. Over at NORAD, the press office is understandably in meltdown. Emails to the official PR address are bouncing, and the press telephone number goes to voice mail, which is [...]

Advertising Industry Forecast For 2013

It’s been an explosive year for the ad industry, particularly in the online sector. From ad targeting’s important role in the presidential election, to Facebook’s recent IPO, online advertising is continuing to grow and evolve in our ever-expanding digital world. As 2012 winds down and we head into the New Year, I have included a few predictions below as to what we might expect to see in the industry over the next year. 1. Facebook Will Allow You To Serve Ads Using Your Own Ad Server Although Facebook began to allow other ad servers on its platform in certain circumstances in 20 [...]

Our Challenge For 2013: Empathetic Social Media

social-media-network-love-heart-featured I've been thinking a lot about empathy lately. Maybe you have, too. By its very definition, empathy involves connecting with others to understand how they feel. And we've never been more connected. With Skype and Hangouts, social media and instant messaging, friends and family are never far away. Making a new connection is as easy as sending a Facebook request or clicking "follow." But we've never been further apart, either. Now we need a game to keep us from picking up our phone during dinner with friends and a social network to help us meet our neighbors. With a new year ahead a [...]

Google Developing “X-Phone” To Avoid Getting “Forked” By Samsung

google-samsung-nexus-phone-featured The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google's Motorola unit is hard at work on a secret "X-phone" that will "provide more potent competition for devices like Apple Inc.'s iPhone." However my suspicion is that the phone is less about competiting with Apple's device and more about providing a counterweight to the Samdroid juggernaut. This is what Google did successfully when it created the Nexus 7 with ASUS to compete with Amazon's Kindle Fire. Indeed, Amazon had the only non-Apple tablet that was selling in the market. However Amazon was using a "forked" version of Android that essen [...]

Quora Aims To Expand Beyond Q&A, Seems To Have Wikipedia In Its Sights

quora-featured Quora has big plans for 2013 that will include the site expanding beyond its Q&A format with new products and/or features that might take on Wikipedia, and perhaps even Google. Co-founder Adam D'Angelo shared the company's mission in a blog post late last night, and promised that Quora will expand in order to meet its goals of becoming "an internet-scale Library of Alexandria." We hope to become an internet-scale Library of Alexandria, a place where hundreds of millions of people go to learn about anything and share everything they know. To do that we are going to have to expand. Today Q [...]

Marketing Biz: Did Facebook Establish An ‘Awful Ideas’ Department?

This week in marketing was dominated by news from Facebook and Twitter. I don't know, I must have missed the memo about Facebook establishing an 'awful ideas' department. So while Facebook wore the mint shoes Twitter continued to forge ahead. They weren't the only heavyweights in the news. Both Oracle and WPP make serious acquisitions that reflect the new digital marketing environment. This is ... Marketing Biz. Facebook prepping new video ads that could autoplay in the feed AdAge first reported about the new product, based on information from industry executives who were briefed by [...]

Comparing comScore’s Top 50 Sites: 2006 And 2012

Once upon a time the comScore "top 50" sites release was an exciting revelation of gainers and losers in the relatively new internet derby. Now it has become very routine and, frankly, a little boring. Yesterday the measurement firm released the top 50 US site rankings for November. Rather than just say "here it is," I decided to spice things up by looking back at the earliest top 50 ranking I could find. That turned out to be May 2006. I was trying to go back 10 years but wasn't able to find anything from 2002. Below is the current top 50 rankings: Here's the list from May 2006: [...]

Instagram Makes Nice With Revised New Terms Of Use. Will Users Be Satisfied?

instagram-featured Just two days after a social media storm erupted over Instagram's proposed new terms of service, the Facebook-owned company -- as promised -- has come up with revisions, in an effort to "communicate our intentions clearly." Rather than say the company's plans themselves led to the controversy, co-founder Kevin Systrom has painted it all as a misunderstanding, where poor wording in its terms caused confusion among users -- many of whom said publicly that they were deleting their accounts over the changes. The first section that people were up in arms about referred to a "non-exclusive, fu [...]

Facebook Tests Pay-For-Delivery Messaging; Brands May Get Access Later

facebook-logo-square Facebook has started a "small experiment" in the U.S. that will let some individual users pay to make sure their messages reach other users' Inboxes. It's part of several changes to how Facebook Messages are sent between users. Facebook is positioning the pay-for-delivery system as a way to reduce spam and other unwanted messages from reaching users' Inboxes. Today we're starting a small experiment to test the usefulness of economic signals to determine relevance. This test will give a small number of people the option to pay to have a message routed to the Inbox rather than the Other fo [...]

Thanks To Project Glass, Google Is Most Shared Video Brand Of 2012 [Report]

google-glass-featured Google videos were shared nearly 5.9 million times in 2012, making it the most shared video brand of the year according to Unruly Media's 2012 Social Video Share Index. Google ranked seventh in the 2011 index, and Unruly Media credits this year's jump to Google's success with its Project Glass: One day... video, the video that Google released in the spring to introduce how consumers might some day use the Google Glass product. (see below) Google videos were shared almost 200 percent more often this year than in 2011. Nike ranks second on Unruly Media's list with about 5.5 million video s [...]

Social Trumps Search On Smartphones But On Tablets Search Is King

kindle-nexus-ipad-mini-featured The market is now awash in data. Each new day brings a dozen surveys or reports to my inbox. Most of these data are generated to promote individual companies but some of the metrics are nonetheless useful and interesting. A lot of the data I'm now seeing pertain to the growing importance of mobile devices and their impact on commerce. Below are a selection of some recent data from several companies and research firms that add more color to the rapidly developing picture of mobile user behavior. For example, comScore recently reported that in Q3 one-tenth of retail e-commerce spending came f [...]

Should Google+ Communities Be Part Of Your Social Media Strategy?

Facebook has profiles, pages and groups. Google+ has profiles and pages. Wait, something is missing at Google+! Or, I should say it was missing. Over the last couple years, we have watched while Google+ systematically built Facebook-like features into its social media site, and to Google's credit other excellent features as well. Well now, Google+ has added one more Facebook-like feature. Google+ Communities are now here, and they look awfully similar to Facebook groups. Of course, there are some differences. What Are Google+ Communities? Google+ Communities are basically discussion fo [...]

Facebook To Halt Mobile Ad Network Test With No Plans To Roll It Out

Facebook Mobile -iphone iOS devices Those of you looking forward to Facebook rolling out the mobile ad network it's been testing can just keep looking forward for now. Though the test is wrapping up at the end of the year, the social media firm has no plans to expand it anytime soon, as first reported by AllThingsD and confirmed by Marketing Land. "We are pausing our mobile ads test off of Facebook," reads a statement from a Facebook spokesperson. "While the results we have seen and the feedback from partners has been positive, our focus is on scaling ads in mobile news feed before ads off of Facebook. We have learned a lot [...]

IAB: US Interactive Ad Revenues Hit $9.3 Billion, A Record High, In Q3

IABpwcq32012 Internet Advertising revenues in the US continue their upward trajectory, climbing to a record quarterly high of $9.3 billion in the July to September period, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) found in its latest report. That's 18% higher than the same period in 2011 and a 6% increase from Q2 of this year. IAB execs said it was a testament to digital marketing's interactive capabilities that it's been able to provide value, and draw increased investment, despite shaky economic times. “Clearly, digital advertising is continuing its positive trajectory with incredible momentum as [...]

How To Integrate Pinterest Into Your Emails

dec_feature More than just a social hub to share images, Pinterest has become a lifestyle brand itself. Exuding a feeling of simple, clean, nearly dreamy -- dare I say aspirational -- moments of pleasure, it's actually influencing a new aesthetic style. In fact, one of the common complaints is how spellbinding the Pinterest experience becomes as users spend hours upon hours exploring content and seeking out new curators of style, inspiration and taste. Adopted primarily by women and at an astounding pace (at this rate there’ll soon be more people with Pinterest accounts than toothbrushes), it’s an [...]
