Google+ Android & iOS Apps Get Communities Support, Other Features

google+ logo Google is updating both the Android and iOS versions of its Google+ app with a host of new -- but mostly minor, frankly -- features. The biggest addition to me, an iOS user, is the addition of support for Google+ Communities -- the feature that rolled out about a week ago for desktop Google+ users. The lack of community support on mobile stood out over the past week as I've been poking around and trying out some communities (and creating a few, too). It's smart for Google to get this into the mobile experience as quickly as it has. Both apps also support profile editing, as well as a ne [...]

Marketing Biz: Yahoo Organic Search Ads, Sinistar & Lots Of Smartphone Screencaps

This week in marketing was rife with smartphone-related features from Twitter filters to Google Maps on the iPhone to Google's new confirmed clicks feature to defeat fat finger ad clicks. But to me it was Yahoo's new cost-per-lead format in organic search results and Delivery Agent's $5 million round of funding from Samsung Ventures that raised eyebrows. This is ... Marketing Biz. Yahoo! Search + New Cost-Per-Lead Format is a Match Made in Advertising Heaven At Yahoo!, we want to see our advertisers build the relationships of their dreams, so we're introducing a new ad format that m [...]

Survey: 91 Percent Have Gone Into Stores Because Of Online Promotion

What you buy online vs. in stores Though most retailers, advertisers and brands have not yet caught up, we are firmly in the multi-platform era. Newspaper-backed local shopping platform Wanderful Media released findings from a shopping survey of just over 1,000 US adults yesterday. The findings both confirm what we already know about changing consumer behavior and provide more color. Reflecting the direct way in which the internet now influences in-store shopping the survey found that 91 percent of respondents "have gone into a store as a result of an online experience." Multiple online experiences have driven consumers int [...]

Studies: As Mobile Email Usage Soars, Marketers Budget More For Email, Mobile And Social

mobile-email-featured Next year looks to be a strong one for email marketing according to a StrongMail survey of more than a thousand marketers released today. The survey found that marketers plan to deploy more budget to email, social and mobile next year -- which makes sense given a second study by ReturnPath found mobile open share has increased 300 percent globally since 2010. Facebook Rebuilds Android App In Native Code To Improve Speed

facebook-android A new version of Facebook's official Android app is available today, and the company is advertising it as "faster than ever." In its announcement, Facebook says things like looking at photos and opening the Timeline are twice as fast as they were before. If that sounds familiar, it's because Facebook made the same claims in August when it re-launched its iOS app. In both cases, Facebook has made the same structural change in its apps: It abandoned HTML 5 and rewrote the app(s) in native code. With more users accessing Facebook each month on mobile devices, it's imperative that Faceb [...]

Facebook Makes Getting More Page Likes Easier For SMBs

Facebook-Like This morning Facebook rolled out a new, simpler way to get more Page likes. It's aimed chiefly though not exclusively at small businesses (SMBs) with fewer than 10,000 fans. That undoubtedly includes the overwhelming majority of SMBs with a presence on Facebook. The tools to create the simpler ad unit are in the Page admin console making it more accessible for SMBs who may be less familiar with Facebook's ad creation flow. Indeed, this is a kind of companion to Promoted Posts, which is a simplified way for SMBs to advertise on Facebook. All the content and daily budget are suggested. Her [...]

Twitter Expands Keyword Targeting Choices For Promoted Tweets

twitter-advertising-icon Advertisers using Twitter's Promoted Tweets product have new keyword options to target their tweets in Twitter's search results, along with a new tool to import keywords from other online ad platforms. The company is launching three keyword matching options, along with the ability to use negative keywords, too. Search marketers will be familiar with the keyword matching options: exact match phrase match keyword match Using negative keywords acts similarly to other platforms; advertisers can indicate keywords that they don't want their ads appearing next to in Twitter search resu [...]

Google Expands “Confirmed Click” Functionality To In-App Smartphone Display Ads

ConfirmedClick-Images How many times have you accidentally clicked on a mobile display ad, when you meant to hit the adjacent content on that tiny phone screen? More importantly, how many of your pay-per-click ads have been clicked on accidentally? This is the problem Google is trying to solve with new "confirmed click" functionality for its in-app mobile display ads on smartphones. When Google detects that a person clicks on the outer edge of an ad unit -- potentially meaning to click on adjacent content -- the user will be prompted to verify that he actually meant to click on the ad. The prompt will take the f [...]

30 Essential Business Apps For Your Smartphone

Interactive marketing professionals don't just use mobile to reach their customers -- they're often avid users of the technology themselves. Whether it's to manage campaigns, to get work done while on the go, or just to become personally familiar with mobile user behavior, getting to know your devices and apps is critical. But when it comes to separating the wheat from the chaff for business mobile apps, it's hard to know which are duds and which are the real deal. Doing a Google search tends to bring up a lot of old posts -- many of which are outdated -- or lists that focus on consumer or [...]

TweetLevel: A GPS For Twitter

tweet-level-featured The dog never ate my homework. Or at least, I never tried to use that as an excuse, which is odd, considering my family actually owned a dog kennel. To this day, the memory of homework sends chills down my spine -- I just wasn't one of those people who dashed off their evening assignments with ease. If only they had called it research. Research evokes pictures of Mission Impossible dossiers of secret agents, or scientists discovering a breakthrough cure for a killer pandemic. Research is a key task in social media marketing. We have to listen to and analyze our communities, perhaps [...]

New Yahoo Mail, Flickr Part Of Larger Mobile Push

yahoo-mail-flickr-featured Yahoo's first two acquisitions in the era of CEO Marissa Mayer weren't big splashy deals as many including me had anticipated; they were modest "acqu-hires" for mobile teams. By the same token Yahoo's launch of new apps for Yahoo Mail and Flickr, yesterday and today, are similar workmanlike updates and upgrades to core Yahoo properties. Yahoo Mail is, from a traffic and monetization perspective, second only in importance to the Yahoo homepage, which is scheduled for a Mayer-inspired refresh as well. In a way it's amazing that there was no iPhone app for Yahoo Mail until yesterday. That' [...]

Google Chairman Schmidt Touts Android Sales: “We’re Like The New Microsoft”

android-apple-ios Amid multiple antitrust investigations around the world, I'm not sure he wanted to suggest that Google was the new Microsoft. But that's the analogy that Google Chairman Eric Schmidt used in his discussion of Android's growth and increasing lead over the iPhone. Quoted in a Bloomberg article Schmidt said the following: Booming demand for Android-based smartphones is helping Google add share at the expense of other software providers, Schmidt said yesterday in an interview at Bloomberg’s headquarters in New York . . . Customers are activating more than 1.3 million Android devices a day, [...]

Ensuring The Email Is Right Before Hitting Send

That moment before you click send on an email to millions of subscribers can really make you sweat, no matter how many times you’ve done it before. Once you hit send, it’s gone to the inbox, and the last thing you want to hear is “did that email go to everyone?” Confirming an email is accurate before it deploys is more than just proofreading and having a second set of eyes; it’s strictly following a well-defined process to ensure that you’re delivering a message that reflects well on your organization. On a rare occasion, mistakes will happen, but you need to constantly work [...]
