It's not news to say that smartphone and feature phone owners use their devices as an active part of in-store shopping. Previous surveys have revealed that more than 80 and even 90 percent of smartphone owners do this. Research firm IDC has released a preliminary global estimate of tablet market share for Q4. The figures are all based on shipments, which are typically not the same as device sales to end users although in some cases shipments do predict sales. According to these numbers, Apple's dominant position in the market declined from 51.7 percent to 43.6 percent. Facebook touted the success of its Promoted Posts product and the general success of ads in the News Feed during its earnings call today, in which it announced Q4 financial figures that beat analyst estimates. Facebook released Q4 and full year results for 2012. The company posted $1.585 billion in quarterly revenue, representing an increase of 40 percent YoY. Full year revenues were $5.09 billion. Ad revenues were $1.33 billion or 84 percent of total quarterly revenue, which was a 41 percent increase over 2011. Mobile revenue represented 23 percent of total ad revenue, up from 14 percent in the previous quarter. Twitter announced a couple changes to its interface today, the most interesting of which (in my opinion) is the addition of videos to media galleries. Media galleries were originally called User Galleries when they rolled out in Summer 2011. They show(ed) the 100 most recent photos that a user shared or retweeted. Twitter says videos from Vine, YouTube, Vimeo and other sources whose videos show in expanded tweets will show up in Media Galleries now. According to a report from GlobalWebIndexOne Pinterest may have dominated U.S. Growth in 2012, but Twitter had the largest global growth. For a time, it looked like Apple's $1 billion patent infringement verdict against Samsung would would rock the smartphone world. However, in the months since the landmark decision was handed down, it has proven to be little more than a symbolic victory. YouTube is reportedly planning a move that will boost its own revenue, while simultaneously giving brands and video producers another way to make money. According to an AdAge report this morning, YouTube is planning to launch subscription-based channels and it could happen as soon as this spring. The once popular advertising exchange adBrite is closing its doors on February 1st. AdBrite claimed to be the largest independent ad exchange with a transparent marketplace, yet won't be able to keep the doors open any longer. One of the most powerful advertising vehicles available on Facebook will probably turn out to be its still little-known Custom Audiences tool. Introduced in August last year, Custom Audiences enables Facebook marketers to target their existing users based on Facebook ID, phone number or email address.
