Yahoo Takes Another Step Toward Growing Its Mobile Audience With New iOS App

Yahoo new iOS app with Summly Yahoo introduced its new iOS app today, noting that the technology used to build the app was possible because of their recent acquisition of Summly. "The new Yahoo mobile app is also smarter, using Summly's natural-language algorithms and machine learning to deliver quick story summaries," said Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer in a post on Yahoo's corporate blog. Yahoo gained a number of headlines when it acquired Summly less than a month ago for approximately $30 million. Most of the attention was garnered because the startup was founded by a 17 year old who based his technology on a licensing arra [...]

Facebook Home Passes 500K Downloads, Gets Mixed Reviews

Facebook-Home-Logo Benedict Evans was the first to notice yesterday that Facehook Home had crossed the 500,000 download threshold on Google Play. That's in the ten days since April 12, when it was released. I'd say that's a decent, if not stellar, number given that Home is only available for select Android devices: Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung Galaxy Note II, HTC One X and HTC One X+. What's perhaps more interesting than the download numbers are the user reviews and comments. The app has a very mixed-to-negative rating overall: Below is a semi-representative sampling of some of the comments: "I tr [...]

Yellow Light Social Media: Use These Tactics With Caution

Smart social media marketers know that some tactics are totally off the table. Spamming that Google Plus community with your off-topic links? That's a no-no. Auto-DMs to new Twitter followers? No way. Then there are tactics that aren't inherently bad, but you may not want to use them every day. Like pop-up ads, advertising jingles or re-targeting campaigns, these tactics can be just shy of annoying if used incorrectly, but often get the kind of results that make them irresistible to try. Let's call these "yellow light" social media tactics. When you come to a yellow light in traffic, [...]

So, You Thought Site Retargeting Was Personalized?

Marketing technologies and strategies are like a runaway train these days -- if you blink, you’ll probably miss the latest techniques; and, if you don’t hold on for dear life, they will pass you by entirely. The good news? It doesn't have to be this hard. An evolving market has far more benefits than disadvantages, if only you know how to wrangle them. Personalization is just one example of this, especially within site retargeting. Before you scratch your head and think that personalization is already in full force within site retargeting, take a step back and let me explain. I'l [...]

Google announced an update to AdSense link units today. In select countries and site verticals, when users click on a link unit keyword, the resulting page will show thumbnail previews of advertisers' landing pages. Instead of a list of ads, here is an example from Google showing what the new page of ads looks like: Google says their testing showed better click-through rates with the thumbnail images. The update to the new ad previews will automatically occur for publishers using link units in the affected countries and site verticals. [...]

YouTube Beats Viacom In Copyright Suit (Again); Viacom To Appeal (Again)

youtube-logo-200 To borrow a famous quote from Yogi Berra: It's like deja vu all over again. YouTube beat Viacom again today in the long-running copyright battle the two have waged, and Viacom is again saying that it plans to appeal the ruling. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news and has posted the court's decision, too. In today's ruling, Judge Louis Stanton -- who also ruled in YouTube's favor back in 2010 -- wrote that "the burden of showing that YouTube knew or was aware of the specific infringements of the works in the suit cannot be shifted to YouTube to disprove." That's a fundamental concept of [...]

Microsoft Posts $20.49B Quarterly Revs: Online Ads Worth $784M, Rev Per Search Up

MicrosoftSquare Earlier today, Microsoft reported $20.49 billion in fiscal quarterly revenue (Q3 13). That figure was just shy of analysts' consensus estimates of $20.5 billion; however, earnings-per-share beat estimates. Despite the "miss," revenues were up across the board, even in the Windows division though PC sales are in decline. (At the time of this report, the earnings call had yet to take place.) There was very little mention of the performance of Windows 8 or Windows Phones in the earnings statements and related material. Here's the breakdown by Microsoft division: Windows Division: reve [...]

Report: BlackBerry Z10 Gains, iPad Share Grows To 82%

iPad mini Two reports over the past two days from ad network Chitika shed light on adoption of the much anticipated BlackBerry Z10 touchscreen phone, as well as the current state of tablets in North America. The new iOS and Android competitor is generating 5.3 percent of all BlackBerry traffic, which reflects a "doubling in usage share since the Z10’s US release 20 days prior." That's impressive until those figures are put into context. Chitika also told me that "BlackBerry-based Web traffic as a whole constitutes about 1 percent of all mobile Web traffic on our network." So, in fact, the Z10 is [...]

While the study did not uncover any unexpected metrics, it does offer a series of benchmarks for email marketers to use as a measuring stick against their ow [...]

Mayer, Sandberg, Systrom Make TIME’s Top 100 List For 2013

TIME-logo Several notable names from the search/social/marketing industries are included on the 2013 Time 100, the magazine's annual attempt to list the most influential people in the world. There's no ranking involved -- it's not a countdown, just a collection of movers and shakers grouped together in categories like "pioneers," "titans" or "leaders." And each person on the list gets a brief essay written by a guest author -- often also someone quite influential in his/her own right. Of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, her former boss at Google, Eric Schmidt, says "when I think back to our time working t [...]

Share of impressions Opera Opera has released its quarterly State of Mobile Advertising report for Q1 2013. The major finding is that "iOS continues to outperform all other device platforms in terms of monetization, with the highest average eCPM and greatest percentage of publisher revenue." In addition the iPhone has regained its lead (among the publishers using Opera's Mediaworks platform) over Android handsets on a global basis. This is remarkable given the overall OS lead that Android has now established. Opera observed that "Android tablets [have grown] to a small but noticeable share of the market." However [...]
