ipad-featured Regardless of what the IDCs, Strategy Analytics and Gartners show in terms of quarterly device shipments and marketshare forecasts, the "facts on the ground" continue to show the iPad driving far more traffic than any competing tablet device. That's reinforced by Chitika's new tablet traffic report. Based on millions of tablet-based impressions on its network during April, from the US and Canada, Chitika says that the iPad drove just over 81 percent of tablet traffic. Kindle Fire was second, with 7.4 percent, and all other tablets were together responsible for roughly 11 percent of traffic. [...]

Managing A Social Media Marketing Team

shutterstock_92510854-surgeon The surgeon leans over the patient, whose abdomen has been surgically opened. “Forceps,” the doctor barks. The nurse hands the doctor a stainless steel instrument. Again the doctor demands, “scalpel!”  The nurse dutifully hands the doctor the necessary tool. We’ve all seen the drill in countless films and television shows. But, the process of a nurse serving as a surgeon’s assistant as a sort of operation room caddy was only developed in the early 20th century, purportedly by efficiency expert Frank Bunker Gilbreth, Sr. In those years, the efficiency movement swept [...]

Can Yahoo Go Native With Tumblr?

tumblr1 When Yahoo spent $1.1 billion to buy social blogging platform Tumblr, there was a huge amount of discussion around what it meant. Whilst only Marissa Mayer and the Yahoo board can be anywhere near certain why the deal was done, what is clear is that this is part of an interesting experiment to decide what the next stage of Internet advertising will look like. Because whilst Yahoo is also now apparently eyeing up a bid for video platform Hulu, Tumblr seems to be Yahoo's attempt to get to grips with native advertising. As I've said recently, content marketing wasn't invented with the Web ( [...]

How Not To Pitch Your Infographic

social-media-attention-featured I love good infographics. And as the person who considers which third-party infographics we run, I appreciate a good pitch, one that demonstrates that someone is aware of what our site is about, what's appropriate for us and doesn't take a cookie cutter approach. That's a good pitch. Here's a bad one that I received yesterday through the Marketing Land contact form: I came across your blog and I have been following for a little bit now. I have enjoyed your articles and think they are very informative. I would like to pass along an infographic describing the growth of social media marke [...]

Twitter Reaches Spam Lawsuit Settlement With Tweet Adder

twitter-legal-law Twitter has settled its lawsuit against Tweet Adder, one of five companies that Twitter sued last year, accusing them of making tools that spread spam across its service. As AllThingsD first reported, the settlement places strict rules on what Tweet Adder is allowed to do with its current software -- primarily, it has to play by all of Twitter's rules. From the settlement document: "Defendants ... are permanently enjoined from directly or indirectly ... creating, developing, manufacturing, adapting, modifying, making available, trafficking in, using, disclosing, selling, licensing, distrib [...]

Planning A Pinterest Contest? Don’t Forget One Pin Is Plenty

pinterest-logo-220 In an attempt to keep marketers from diluting Pinterest's core value of quality over quantity, the image-focused social media site updated contest guidelines earlier this year, adding a list of "Dos" and "Don'ts" for brands wanting to host Pinterest contests. Pinterest's compliance language makes it clear that they are in no way responsible for any promotions hosted on their site, and any brand holding a Pinterest contest must comply with all legal requirements. The list of "Dos" and "Don'ts" offered on Pinterest's Brand Guidelines page give marketers a standard set of rules to follow wh [...]
