#ItsAHit: Study Shows Facebook Hashtags Have Been Adopted By Big Brands

facebook-hashtags-featured It's now been two full weeks since Facebook jumped into the hashtag market. A recent survey from SimplyMeasured found that so far, hashtags have been a hit with the top brands on Facebook. From June 12th to June 24th, 56% of the top 100 brands have posted a Facebook update that contained a hashtag. Nearly 40% of brands have posted multiple hashtagged posts, and a small portion of the brands went hashtag crazy with 10+ hashtag laden posts in that timeframe. The hashtagging hasn't been on a fleeting trial-basis. Brands have slowly ramped up the use of hashtags since Jun 12th. Of the po [...]

FTC Commissioner Surprises Marketers With “Reclaim Your Name” Proposal

ftc-logo The debate over online and data privacy in the US is intensifying in the wake of the NSA surveillance revelations. However the effort to do something about data privacy has largely stalled in Congress -- despite many blustery pronouncements and calls for investigations. There are also private initiatives that are seemingly deadlocked, including the WC3's effort to come to agreement on Do Not Track. This morning, FTC Commissioner Julie Brill addressed the Computers Freedom and Privacy Conference and made remarks that reportedly caught many marketers and online ad trade groups off guard. B [...]

Android To Become Dominant Platform, US iPad Share Grows

mobile youtube On Monday, Gartner put out some new hardware forecast figures that try to capture the future of devices and operating systems. The firm says the market is "being driven by sales in tablets, smartphones, and to a lesser extent, ultramobiles, as PC shipments are on the decline." Below is Gartner's global prediction for device share by operating system in 2014. Even if it's not entirely accurate, what's incredible is the gap between Android and Windows in the forecast. Source: Gartner (6/13) If we look only at the PC market, it's a different story, of course. But one no longer can in [...]

The program aims to give app marketers an alternative to traditional in-app ads. This is the company's first foray into monetization. EVP of Product, Guru Gowrappan, told me, "The natural evolution is to go into sponsored apps." "We are applying Functional Search, our core organic search product, to the Sponsored Apps program. Advertisers can target by [...]

The Real Impact Of Mobile On Marketing: More Visual Content

As of February of this year, there were 2.4 billion people online -- a little over one third of the world's population. That's a lot of people to keep interested. And while companies are looking for new ways to create agile content (infographics, tweets, videos, etc.) and curate the most relevant content from their partners, employees and customers, there is still a huge gap in the demand versus the supply. Meanwhile, as I discussed in my mobile marketing predictions post back in January, the meteoric growth of mobile devices and technology continues to change the way we live on a daily bas [...]

Facebook Ads Manager Reports Update Gives Advertisers More Control

Facebook is following up on its recent efforts to streamline its ad products and revamp Page Insights with an update to Ads Manager Reports designed to make it "easier to use and more actionable." The biggest change to Ads Manager Reports is the ability to select the ad metrics you want to include in a report, rather than being tied to the specific set of Report Type templates that exist now. In the new interface, there is much more flexibility to view and break out the data how you want it--in one report.   The Cost per Action area in the Metrics menu (shown in the screensh [...]

Europe: Google Wins “Censorship” Battle, Slammed On Antitrust Proposals

Google Europe legal Google's struggles in Europe continue. However the company apparently has won something of a reprieve in its battle against the emerging "the right to be forgotten," which Google largely regards as censorship. But on the antitrust front, Google faces stepped up criticism of its settlement proposals from critics and opponents. On Monday, an advisory (non-binding) opinion from Niilo Jaeaeskinen of the EU Court of Justice found that Google cannot (or should not) be compelled to de-index material that was originally legally posted on third-party publisher sites. According to an article appe [...]

Why Do Consumers Become Facebook Fans? Study Says It Depends On The Brand

facebook-like-logos Consumers may be a bit more sophisticated than the conventional wisdom would lead us to believe. According to a new study from Syncapse, there's not a single dominant reason that consumers choose to become a brand's Facebook fan. Instead, there are numerous different reasons it happens -- and, what's more, the biggest "fan-drivers" depend on what brand you're talking about. This is something that brands and marketers have been trying to sort out for several years. When I wrote about it in 2010 on Small Business Search Marketing, two separate studies both suggested that coupons and deals [...]

comscore-logo According to this month's comScore Media Metrix report, Tumblr has climbed 12 places up the list of top 50 US Web properties in the last two months, moving from the 41st spot in March to rank 29th in May. Media Buying 101: Why You Need Your Own Ad Server

As an advertiser, there is no better way to purchase massive amounts of online display ad inventory than directly from publishers or ad networks. Granted, there is more legwork involved when compared to programmatic buying, and the CPM rates can be quite high -- but this is offset by the ability to reserve large amounts of inventory. When you're buying media in bulk, the need for a proper ad server is very important in terms of controlling your ad operations. You could say that it’s a best practice to use your own ad server, especially if you run a consistent volume of ad campaigns. How [...]

Is John Deere The Original Content Marketer?

john-deere-featured Though the approach of using content in marketing initiatives has become more prevalent over the past couple of years, businesses have been employing content marketing strategies since the 1800s. Today, marketers use online content to educate and entertain their audiences in order to drive traffic, conversions and/or leads. Similarly, more than 100 years ago, companies used content (albeit different types) in hopes of increasing business and revenue. Consider John Deere. In 1895, John Deere started publishing a magazine for farmers called The Furrow. The company published the magazine i [...]
