Instagram Video: What About Vine, Monetization And Porn?

vine-instagram-200px Danny Sullivan captured the stats, the announcement and offered an initial "hands on" impression of the new video-recording feature on Instagram. My initial reaction, having just downloaded the iOS update, is that it works as advertised. It's simple, has several very nice features (image stabilization isn't yet available for Android) and will probably be quickly adopted by millions of people. One immediate question is: how will it impact Vine? Vine has seen significant adoption and is being used extensively by brands and marketers because of its Twitter connection. While Instagram video [...]

Google Given Privacy Ultimatum By French: Fix It Or Face Fines

google-privacy-200 The French have given Google what amounts to a privacy ultimatum. The company now has three months to make changes or "fixes" to its privacy policy that satisfy French and broader European data protection laws. The immediate consequences for failure to do so could be fines of several million euros according to Bloomberg. Many nations in Europe have lined up behind the French who are taking the lead in trying to get Google to offer more transparency to users about what data are being collected and how those data are being used. European privacy rules are much more stringent than those in the U [...]

Analyzing Subscriber Complaints For Better Inbox Placement & Response

It’s summertime, which means marketers are starting to think about and plan for Christmas email campaigns. As most marketers realize, subscriber reach -- specifically inbox placement -- can truly make or break an email campaign. To avoid the spam folder this holiday season and beyond, marketers should analyze subscriber complaints. A subscriber complaint is marked every time someone receives an email and the subscriber marks it as spam or junk. This information is fed back to the mailbox providers (the Yahoo!s, Gmails, and Hotmails of the world) and informs the spam filters if and where t [...]

Advanced Targeting With Partner Categories

Recently, Facebook began to incorporate third-party data into its ad targeting with the release of partner categories. I thought I'd take the opportunity to explain this new capability in a little more detail. What Are Partner Categories? For the first time, advertisers can target users based on their off-Facebook purchasing behavior. As Facebook puts it: To date, advertisers have been able to show ads to people based on their expressed interests on Facebook. Now with partner categories, they can also show ads to people on Facebook based on the products and brands they buy. Data for these [...]

Study: Google+ Will Overtake Facebook’s Social Sharing By 2016

google-plus-analytics-featured Google+ is turning 2 years old this month and has seen both solid growth and criticism during these first years. However, all that talk of Google+ ghost town talk could soon be moot according to a recent SearchMetrics study. Not only is Google+ projected to being thriving, but it is also projected to pass Facebook in social shares on February 2016. To generate this data, SearchMetrics looked at comparison of average monthly growth of Facebook "shares" vs. Google "+1s" from the previous 6 months. The study saw that the number of Facebook shares grew roughly 10% per month while Goog [...]

Claiming to be a discovery engine for the social Web, Spindle was originally launched as a mobile application that pulls local business updates from social networks. From the Spindle blog: We’ve spent the past two and a half years building a product that helps you answer the question: “What’s happening nearby right now?" Every time we’ve experimented and looked beyond local discovery, we’ve been amazed by the breadth and quality of content shared on Twitter [...]

Google is introducing a new benchmarking tool for AdSense accounts called Publisher Scorecards. Located on the Home tab in your AdSense account, the scorecard offers a performance summary of your ad settings, webpages and content relative to other AdSense publishers. Each performance category -- revenue optimization, site health, and, notably, Google+ -- are scored on a scale of one to five blue dots. Survey: 96 Percent Say “Do Not Track” Should Be Respected

privacy-security-online-computer A new survey from a group called Consumer Action has an unequivocal message for marketers: do not track us. The telephone survey was conducted in May among 1,000 US adults. The findings are pretty negative, even ominous, for publishers and ad networks. However, they should come as no surprise. In numerous past surveys consumers have consistently expressed ambivalence and even outright hostility to the idea of being tracked and targeted by online marketers, ad networks and publishers. This survey was partly funded through "a grant from Microsoft." Below I highlight some of the findings bu [...]

Google Surveys Glass Explorers With Questions Hinting At Public Sale

google-glass-logo-200px Google is gathering feedback from its Glass Explorers via a survey that hints at the company's plans for selling Glass to the public. The survey asks some general questions (such as how often do you use Glass and why did you get it), but also gets specific about getting feedback that will help Google position Glass in the tech marketplace. I received an invite to take the survey several days ago. The most interesting questions are the ones that ask about Glass accessories. Explorers received several extras for free with the device: clip-on sun shades, a clear clip-on, a carrying pouch an [...]
