Android Tablet Shipments Soar, Usage Hasn’t Shown Up Yet

Image Credit: Gizmodo Strategy Analytics came out with Q2 shipment estimates for tablets -- which are supposed to exceed PC sales by the end of this year on a global basis. It's now a critical market segment. The data show Android tablets with a solid "shipments share" lead over the iPad. What the numbers appear to reflect is two-thirds Android market share vs. iOS. However that's not reflected in actual usage, at least in North America, where the iPad has increased its share of Web traffic over Q1. Collectively, according to Chitika, non-iPad tablets (essentially Android) are driving roughly 16 percent o [...]

Statistical Tricks You Need That Prove You Should Read This Column Every Month

estimated pageviews The folks at Search Engine Land spend a lot of time trying to divine the Google search algorithm from Matt Cutts' words like reading tea leaves in the bottom of a cup. On Search Engine Land, we were somewhat limited to topics directly or indirectly related to search marketing. Now, we can spread our wings here at Marketing Land. Represent! With a completely new audience, I'd like to entice you to read t [...]

Yelp More Likely To Filter Extreme Reviews & New Accounts [Study]

yelp-featured Yelp keeps the details of its review filter algorithm secret, for obvious reasons, but a new study suggests that there are some things about the review and the reviewer that are more likely to trigger the filter. Michael Luca and Georgios Zervas recently published a working paper, Fake it Till You Make it: Reputation, Competition, and Yelp Review Fraud, that's based on a study of more than 316,000 Yelp reviews of Boston restaurants. Their study covered more than 3,600 different businesses. They found that Yelp's review filter had hidden more than 50,000 of those, or about 16 percent of a [...]

Paid Search Can’t Scale Without Help

It’s the point of scale, and all brands hit it -- from the small start-ups to the massive retailers of the world. It’s amazingly great because it means you have covered your current customer demand to the best of your ability (e.g., your brand is covered in search, SEO is a well-oiled machine, remarketing, email, etc., are all in good spots), and you need to find new avenues for acquiring new customers and growing your business. 4 Ways To Create Successful Social Media Content

When developing a content marketing strategy, one of the most crucial aspects of the plan is often social media marketing. When content is created, it is usually produced with hopes of being shared across the Web, not only through internal marketing campaigns, but also organically on social media networks. It isn't always as easy as it may seem to create content that people want to share. Generating buzz is difficult when a content piece isn't optimized for social media or wasn't created with social-specific goals in mind. However, there are many steps you can take to assure the content you [...]

Pinterest Announces Support For Do-Not-Track

pinterest-logo Buried in a post about greater, coming personalization on Pinterest is a statement that says if consumers don't want the tracking they can opt-out. The company supports Do-Not-Track (DNT): We’re excited to give everyone a more personalized experience, but we also understand if you’re not interested! We support Do Not Track, and you can change your account settings anytime. The New York Times points out that after Twitter (in May 2012), Pinterest is the next major player on a very short list of Internet brands to support DNT. Microsoft (with IE 10), Chrome and Mozilla are all supporters o [...]

Smaller Phone Makers Challenge Samsung In Android Market

smartphones Just when it seemed like the Android market was becoming entirely synonymous with Samsung, smaller vendors appear to be gaining traction. That's according to new hardware figures from IDC. Samsung remained the world's dominant phone maker (Nokia is number two, but not in the smartphone top 5). The Korean company shipped more than 72 million units in the quarter compared to Apple's 31 million. However, both companies lost overall market share as LG, Lenovo and ZTE collectively gained 3.1 percentage points on the market leaders. Source: IDC Strategy Analytics released a competing re [...]

Google AdWords Enhanced Campaigns Roll-Out, Slowly: Broader CPC Impact Yet To Be Seen

google-adwords-square-logo Google's mandatory rollout of AdWords Enhanced Campaigns began this week as a trickle rather than the bang many had expected. After warning AdWords advertisers for months that the deadline for transitioning campaigns to enhanced was July 22, 2013, Google announced that day that the migration would, like most product launches, take several weeks. This also meant that Monday was much less dramatic than anticipated. The verdict is still out on how enhanced campaigns will affect advertiser costs. Many have predicted enhanced campaigns will increase CPCs as more advertisers add mobile targeting [...]

Chromecast Hugely Popular, Sells Out On Amazon, BestBuy

Chromecast official image Introduced just this Wednesday, Google's streaming media dongle Chromecast is an immediate hit. The device has sold out on Amazon and BestBuy. There's a two to three week shipping wait time in the Google Play store. In addition an introductory Netflix promotion proved so popular it has been stopped. Amazingly, there are already 100 reviews of the device on Amazon (six more than when I took the above screenshot just about an hour ago). Danny Sullivan offers a detailed comparison of Chromecast vs. Apple TV and Roku. The popularity of Chromecast is driven by its simplicity (vs. Google T [...]

Compared: What You Can Watch On Google Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku & Xbox

tv-video-featured Want to stream content from the Internet to your TV? There's a new player in town, Google's Chromecast. It's super easy to use and priced to move. What's not to like? If you're happy with just Netflix, you're good. If you want Hulu or HBO Go, paying a bit more for Roku or Apple TV may make sense, unless you don't mind using your laptop. Then again, for only $35, maybe you'll decide Chromecast is worth being a second device. The Players Chromecast is entering a space where two other major Internet-to-TV devices already exist, Apple TV and Roku. Xbox, a gaming console, can also double as a str [...]

Facebook — Friend Or Foe For Content Marketers?

facebook for content marketing I see it online quite often -- someone publishes new content on their blog and then rushes over to their Facebook Fan Page to share the link. The thinking is, "I have 10,000 'Likes,' so here come 10,000 people to my blog post!" Uh, not so fast -- it does not work that way.   I'm not sure if you know this, but your Fan Page status updates only reach a small percentage of your followers via their Newsfeeds -- about 16%, according to Facebook. In order to reach a larger percentage of your own fans, you have to pay for it via Facebook ads -- or hope a lot of the fans that did [...]

How To Measure Local Area & Directory Referrals With Google Analytics

ML Metro Map If you're a small business that relies on foot traffic, referrals, and/or calls from a specific geographic area, Google Analytics has likely been a bit of a mystery to you (unless you're a power user). We can look at the referral traffic from sites that focus on local area traffic, and we can also see the "location" of visitors under the "Demographics" area of Google Analytics. The issue here has always been ease of use. As a sm [...]
