Infographics & Visual Storytelling: How To Do It The Right Way

SearchEngineLand-Periodic-Table-of-SEO-2013-medium When Jay-Z released "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" back in 2009, he took it upon himself to "draw [a] line in the sand." He pointed out that auto-tune had become a victim of its own success, with everyone jumping on the bandwagon and many artists using it as a crutch or a gimmick rather than a way of taking music to new and innovative directions. It was a polarizing yet seminal moment in Hip-Hop culture. The Problem With Infographics The marketing industry is having a similar moment with infographics. Over the last few years, infographics have become one of the most popular ways to build i [...]

Gaining Traction With Content Marketing: How To Build Personas

people-crowd-happy-600 Every year, the flood of content produced and distributed online only increases, making it harder and harder for any one brand to stand out. That is especially true for content strategies with an undefined (or loosely defined) target market. If you don't know exactly who you are writing for -- including their needs, challenges, likes and dislikes -- your content will only fade away into the noise. Good content does not just come from throwing it all against the wall just to see what sticks. Great content resonates with very specific groups of people that react to it in very specific ways [...]

UK Watchdog Clears Microsoft’s Scroogled-Style Radio Ad Against False Advertising Claims

msft-outlook-privacy The UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has cleared a radio ad attacking Google's privacy practices against complaints that it amounted to false advertising. In the decision announced yesterday, the ASA rejected two complaints about an ad promoting Microsoft's Outlook email that said it -- unlike Google's Gmail service -- doesn't scan the contents of emails to sell ads. The radio ad begins with a voice speaking in Pig-latin, followed by a narrator who says "Pig Latin may be hard to understand, but you probably need it if you use Gmail, because Gmail scans every word of your e-mail [...]

Study: 30% Of Facebook Users Are Consuming News, But It’s Mostly “Incidental” Consumption

news-headlines-featured After posting an overview yesterday of the Pew Research Center's State of News Media report, we wanted to dig a little deeper into the study's research on social media news consumption. According to the Pew report, three in ten Facebook users get news from the social media site. Even with the relatively high number of people reading news on Facebook, Pew claims Facebook news consumption is an "incidental experience." According to the report, only 22 percent of the people reading news on Facebook believe it is a useful news resource. The remaining 78 percent are on Facebook for reasons ot [...]

Traditional PCs Shrink To 10 Percent Of Device Market In 2015

Multiscreen Millward Brown IT consulting firm Gartner projected today that overall device shipments (not sales) would increase this year by nearly 7 percent vs. 2013. Sale of traditional PCs still represent a drag on the industry, although tablet substitution for PCs is supposed to slow. Recognizing the importance of addressing all platforms now Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced today (as expected) that Microsoft Office would be available for the iPad as a set of native apps: We’re bringing Office, the gold standard in getting things done, to the iPad. A billion people rely on Office every day, and we’ve wor [...]

Among Top 100 Etail Sites Only 9 Pct Using Responsive Design

mobile-responsive-design-featured Despite being a recommended mobile "best practice," only 9 percent of the top 100 e-retail sites are using responsive design. That's according to the latest edition of The Search Agency's Mobile Experience Scorecard. Previously, the agency evaluated and ranked the mobile sites of the Fortune 100 and top 100 traditional retailers. In this ranking exercise, The Search Agency considered a range of criteria, including site/page load time, site format, search box, shopping cart, sign in, social media buttons and app presence. Each category offered a potential score of five points. Those were [...]

R.I.P Retweet? Twitter Experiment Features “Share” Button Instead of “Retweet”

Twitter-Large The days of Retweeting may be numbered. Twitter has been testing more mainstream verbiage by replacing "Retweet" with "Share."  Twitter has been quite active in tweaking the user interface as of late. Last week, "views" were spotted and yesterday, we saw the introduction of tagging without adding a Twitter handle in the Tweet. Eli Langer of CNBC complied a custom timeline with examples of the share button in the wild (warning - some examples may contain NFSW language): Goodbye, Retweet? // Studies have shown that many users find Twitter too difficult to understand. This test is g [...]

Twitter Adds Photo Tags That Will Notify Others (Yet Won’t Count Toward Your 140 Characters)

Phototagging-Twitter Imagine Ellen trying to tag everyone in her Oscar selfie and still having room enough to insert a joke about Bradley Cooper's arm length. It wouldn't happen. Until now, the only way to notify a user that they've been included in a photo is to make sure that their Twitter handle is included in the body of the Tweet. Until now. Twitter has announced that users will have the ability to tag up to 10 people in a photo without burning through any of the precious 140 characters. A new feature will soon be rolling out in the updated versions of the app that will allow users to see a "Who's in t [...]

Key Data From Pew’s “State Of News Media” Report

Pew State of News Media 2014 The Pew Research Center’s Journalism Project has released its 11th State of the News Media report. A comprehensive "document," it covers TV, newspapers, magazines, radio and digital. I won't try to summarize the full sweep of this "best of times, worst of times" report. However, below I've excerpted a few key findings and charts that provide a snapshot into where things stand in US journalism and news consumption. Across platforms and industries news generates just over $63 billion in annual (mostly ad) revenues. The charts above show the revenue breakdown by medium and revenue so [...]
