Google, Facebook Have 7 Of Apple’s Top 25 All-Time iPhone Apps

Google and Facebook combine to take up seven spots on Apple's newly-released list of the Top 25 all-time free iPhone apps. Apple published that list -- and three others -- as part of its countdown to 50 billion App Store downloads, which the company expects to happen soon. (Apple is giving away a $10,000 App Store credit to whomever completes the 50 billionth download and $500 credits to 50 others.) Those lists look at the most popular iPhone apps (free and paid) and iPad apps (free and paid). On the paid side, the majority of apps on both lists are games. But, there's more variety in th [...]

Apple Beats The Street With $43.6B And Higher Than Expected iPhone, iPad Sales, Record iTunes Sales

The bears were wrong. Apple beat Wall Street financial analysts' expectations this afternoon. The company had been steadily losing value as analyst after analyst expressed anxiety about the company's outlook. Apple reported quarterly gross revenues of $43.6 billion, compared with a $42.3 billion consensus estimate. Second quarter revenues in 2012 were $39.2 billion. Growth was driven by better-than-expected iPhone and iPad sales. Last quarter Apple reported $54 billion in revenue (a miss) and $13 billion in profit (a beat). Profit was $9.5 billion vs. $13 billion for the holiday quarter. [...]

Boston Manhunt Pushes CNN, Police Scanner Apps Into iTunes Top Ten

As law enforcement officials continue their manhunt for one fugitive that's suspected to have been involved in the Boston Marathon bombing this week, consumers looking for the latest news and information have pushed several news and scanner-type apps into the iOS top apps charts. As of about 11:30 am PT, CNN's app has taken over the top spot on the iPhone's free app chart. It wasn't in the top five as recently as last night. Further down the top 10, an app called 5-0 Radio Police Scanner Lite is ranked seventh, TuneIn Radio -- another source for following police scanner communications -- is [...]

Report: BlackBerry Z10 Gains, iPad Share Grows To 82%

Two reports over the past two days from ad network Chitika shed light on adoption of the much anticipated BlackBerry Z10 touchscreen phone, as well as the current state of tablets in North America. The new iOS and Android competitor is generating 5.3 percent of all BlackBerry traffic, which reflects a "doubling in usage share since the Z10’s US release 20 days prior." That's impressive until those figures are put into context. Chitika also told me that "BlackBerry-based Web traffic as a whole constitutes about 1 percent of all mobile Web traffic on our network." So, in fact, the Z10 is [...]

Report: Google’s Next Nexus 7 Drops Price To $149

A new report from Reuters, citing anonymous sources, says that Google's new Nexus 7 tablet will be released in July and could be priced at the low-low price of $149. This would be $50 better than the current version, which was the best small tablet until the arrival of the iPad Mini. It's still the best for its price point and better generally than Amazon's Kindle line of tablets. Reducing the price by $50 for the entry level Nexus 7 would not only drive more sales but put enormous pressure on Google rival Amazon, which has generally been selling Kindle Fires at break even. The repor [...]

Feedly Continues To Eat Up Google Reader Mobile Users

Since the announcement of Google Reader closing shop July 1, Feedly has taken the lead for top news app on Androids, iPhones and iPads. After winning the No. 1 spot for news apps on Google Play and U.S. iTunes App Store last week, Feedly showed up No. 2 on Google Play and No. 4 on the U.S. App Store for both iPhones and iPads as of March 24. While a slight drop from last week's rankings, Feedly continues to out-rank other mobile Google Reader alternatives like NewsBlur, a favorite of our corresponding editor, Gary Price. Earlier this month, more than 500,000 Google Readers  transitio [...]

Apple Devices Dominate In-Flight, Tablet Traffic

The tablet is becoming the device of choice in the air. According to Gogo, 35 percent of in-flight Internet usage happens on tablets, 32 percent on smartphones. The remaining 33 percent is on laptops. It's easy to see why tablets are becoming the preferred in-flight work and entertainment device. Economy travelers are often unable to open their laptops when the seats in front of them recline. (As an aside, here's an aggressive response to that problem.) The majority of in-flight mobile devices running on Gogo are on iOS (84 percent), while 16 percent are Android, which has grown from [...]

Apple iPad Loses Some “Shipments Share,” Still Dominates Web Traffic

Research firm IDC has released a preliminary global estimate of tablet market share for Q4. The figures are all based on shipments, which are typically not the same as device sales to end users although in some cases shipments do predict sales. According to these numbers, Apple's dominant position in the market declined from 51.7 percent to 43.6 percent. Samsung lead the Android tablet makers with 15.1 percent market share, followed by Amazon's Kindle Fire, with 11.5 percent of the market in Q4. Source: IDC (1/13) Last week Apple reported that it sold roughly 23 million iPads in Q [...]

Apple Reports Mixed Results: $54 Billion Quarterly Revenue (Miss), $13 Billion Profit (Beat)

In what is widely being seen as a miss (except for profit), Apple reported quarterly revenues of $54.5 billion this afternoon. That was slightly below consensus revenue expectations. The company posted higher profits ($13.1 billion) and earnings per share than expected. Even though they were "record results" according to Apple, analysts' expectations were extremely high. Accordingly each sales category came in just under anticipated unit sales figures. For example most analysts expected 50 million iPhones to have been sold in the previous quarter. However the company "only" sold 47.8 m [...]

If 2012 Was “The Year Of Mobile,” 2013 Will Be “The Year Of The Tablet”

After a year of massive growth in smartphone adoption nobody is questioning the importance of mobile anymore. Finally the tired conference joke, "Every year for the past ten years has been the year of mobile," will be repeated no more (thank the lord). But even as marketers have yet to fully "get their heads around" the new reality of smartphone-powered consumer behavior they'll have to contend with yet another form factor: tablets. No longer a novelty gadget, the tablet is now a mainstream computing device. Post-Xmas sales data will soon make that very clear. If 2012 was finally, defini [...]

Report: iPad Owners More Educated, Affluent Than Android Tablet Owners

The  Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism released a report on the mobile news consumption habits of US young adults. If you're interested in the future of news there are some very interesting findings that have practical implications for news publishers. One of the those findings has to do with the fact that although younger consumers have largely abandoned print newspapers they still want a "print-like" experience of news on their tablets. According to the study the tablet-news audience is somewhat more likely to be male than female, although that will like [...]

Study: Nexus Tablets Generating Many Times More Traffic Than Microsoft Surface

Ad network Chitika did a comparison of traffic being generated by Nexus tablets compared with Microsoft Surface. The traffic compared was from impressions on its network in the US and Canada during the week of November 12. Surface came out on October 26 and the Nexus 10 on November 13, so the latter is less likely to show up in this report. The results of the study show that the Nexus tablets (mostly Nexus 7) are generating considerably more traffic than the Microsoft Surface tablet. The chart below represents "tens of millions" of impressions according to Chitika. We won't truly kno [...]

YouTube announced they have updated the iOS app they launched a couple months ago in response to Apple dropping the native YouTube app. The update brings the much requested iPad user interface support to the app, it also gives iPhone 5 users support as well. So it fills the full iPad screen as well as the full iPhone 5 taller screen. Other features include: Stream videos with AirPlay Tap logo to open your Guide of channels Add and remove videos from your playlists Clickable links in video descriptions Improved accessibility with VoiceOver You can download the app or update th [...]

Study: iPad Controls 98 Percent Of Tablet Web Traffic

There are a lots of tablets in the market now and hardware-tracking firm IDC says that Android's share is gaining on Apple. However, despite the increase in "shipments" of various tablets, very few of them drive meaningful web traffic according a new study from mobile publishing platform Onswipe. Onswipe says that the iPad is responsible for a remarkable 98 percent of all tablet-based traffic to its publisher partners. All other tablets drive less than 2 percent of web traffic combined. This would be almost unbelievable if it weren't supported by other research showing similar trends. Ho [...]

The Nexus 10 Hands-On: Solid Tablet, But Not Cheap Enough Against iPad?

I've been testing Google's new Nexus 10 tablet for the past few days, and there's plenty to love. It's fast, has a great screen and nice sound. There are plenty of the key apps I like. It offers content galore through Google Play. But at the same price as the basic iPad and only $100 less than the iPad Retina, it'll face a challenge to woo customers away. The Nexus 7: Price Is Compelling Google is growing its Nexus line of tablets up from the Nexus 7 to the Nexus 10 right at the same time Apple's growing its iPad line of tablets down from the iPad to the iPad Mini. Big or small, both ha [...]

Opera: iOS Devices Drive Higher CPMs, More Revenue Than Android

There are almost 2X more Android handsets in the market than the iPhone. However the iPhone (and iOS devices) generate higher eCPMs and almost twice the ad revenue of Google-powered devices. This comes from Opera, which owns mobile ad network/mediator AdMarvel and released the data as part of its Q3 State of the Mobile Web report. Opera saw eCPMs of $1.48 in Q3 on the iPhone compared to an average of just $0.88 from Android devices. Across iOS devices the eCPM average was $1.64, because of a massive $4.42 eCPM from the iPad. Most of the ad revenue in the Opera/AdMarvel network (7 [...]

Apple Earnings: $36B Revenue, 44M iOS Devices Sold

Apple released fiscal Q4 earnings this afternoon. It was a good news/bad news scenario for Cuptertino. Revenues were somewhat higher than expected at $36 billion (vs. $28.3 billion a year ago). And Apple surprised with higher-than-expected iPhone sales, but iPad sales feel short of what analysts had anticipated. Apple posted quarterly net profit of $8.2 billion vs. $6.6 billion a year ago. Now for the device numbers: iPhones: 26.9 million (vs. analyst estimates of 25 million) iPads: 14 million (vs. estimates of 15 million) Macs: 4.9 million (1 percent increase vs. a year ago) i [...]

iPad Mini A Great 7-Inch Tablet, But Price A Success Barrier

Yesterday at the Apple iPad Mini launch event I had a chance to play with the smaller Apple tablet for about 10 minutes. It initially did look and feel to me, contrary to the statements of Apple SVP Phil Schiller, like a "shrunken iPad." However it was also immediately clear, as has been pointed out several times in other "hands on" reviews, that this is the best small tablet now on the market. Apple may have built the best-quality 7-inch category tablet but the ultimate success of the Mini is far from certain. Why? Its price. I have been harping on this for several months. Yesterday Dan [...]

The Tablet Pricing Spectrum: Kindle Fire To Nexus 7 To iPad Mini

As expected, Apple announced its new iPad Mini today. One of the key areas being watched was pricing. For the seriously price conscious, the iPad Mini doesn't look to be a game changer. Comparative prices below, along with technical specs pitting the iPad Mini against its rivals. Much was made during the event about how the experience of using the iPad beats Android tablets. The Nexus 7 was even used as a comparison of this. The Nexus 7 name was never said, but it was shown side-by-side with the iPad Mini. No doubt, many will choose the iPad over the Nexus 7 or other mini-tablets just f [...]
