Study: Only 22 Percent Of Top 200 Apps Using Deep Links

mobile-apps-featured Among the top 200 mobile apps only 22 percent are using "deep links" from their websites into their mobile apps. This is according to an analysis by URX. Deep links are those that send a user from a website to a relevant page, piece of content or search result within a mobile app as opposed to the app's homepage. Google and Facebook are both promoting this as a way to webify the mobile app universe. URX details its methodology in its blog post. Essentially the firm looked for "tag sets proposed by Twitter, Facebook, Google, or URX omnilink tags." Below are the findings by platform -- mea [...]

Apple WWDC Keynote: Yosemite, iOS 8 But No Hardware

apple-osx-yosemite-600 Apple CEO Tim Cook takes the stage to thunderous applause. Cook tells the crowd this is the 25th anniversary of the conference. Two-thirds of attendees are here for the first time, he says. The youngest developer in the audience today is 13 years old. Cook says there are nine million registered Apple developers, up over 50 percent since last year. We're here to talk about the Mac OS 10 and iOS. "You're going to see some great new features for both." He promises "the mother of all releases for developers." Cheers. What about the hardware Tim? (There wasn't any it turns out.) Cook [...]

Second Apple Patent Suit Vs. Samsung Ropes In Google

apple-google-featured If you're tired of news about smartphone-related patent litigation, you're not alone. However, there's more to come as Apple and Samsung's long-running patent feud appears no closer to resolution today than it was two years ago. The parties return to court this week for another round of patent-for-tat. The new case presents five Apple claims against Samsung and two counterclaims against Apple. Among the Apple claims against Samsung are "slide to unlock" and "tap to search" (on a map) or call a phone number. The damages sought by each side are curiously unbalanced. Apple wants a $40 roya [...]

Android Tablets: 62 Pct. Of Sales But Only 23 Pct. Of Traffic

android-featured Gartner released new estimates of 2013 tablet sales on a global basis. The firm said that Android saw its market share go from 46 percent in 2012 to 62 percent last year. Apple's share fell from 53 percent to 36 percent accordingly. As with the smartphone market in the US and selected other markets, Apple remains the single largest individual vendor. Yet again, very strangely, Android shipments and alleged market share don't line up with actual internet traffic figures. Below are data from StatCounter that reflect global internet traffic from tablets. Unless the StatCounter da [...]

Apple Sees Record $57.6 Billion Revs, 51M iPhone Sales

Apple logo Apple announced revenues and earnings that beat consensus earnings estimates though some will regard it as a "mixed" quarter. Revenues were $57.6 billion -- a new record. That's up 6 percent from a year ago. The iPad sold better than expected, with 26 million units vs. an analyst estimate of roughly 24 or 25 million. However the iPhone missed aggressive projections of 55 - 57 million units, selling 51 million instead -- still a record. Below are the top-level device sales figures and other numbers: $57.6 billion in revenue (vs. $54.5 billion a year ago) $13.01 billion in profit [...]

How Many iPhones Did Apple Sell Last Quarter: 50 Million Or More?

Apple logo On January 27 Apple will release its fiscal Q1 and full-year results. We'll find out the answer to a question and game that pundits and financial analysts play each quarter: how many devices did the company sell? A year ago Apple announced sales of 47.8 million iPhones and 22.9 million iPads. It recorded $54.5 billion in gross revenue. Over the past several weeks there has been a flood of third party data, suggesting that iPhones sold well. The outlook for the iPad is a bit murkier. As a matter of routine, financial analysts issue revenue and sales predictions for companies they cov [...]

The Pew survey, which also explores e-reading habits, specifically reports that "42 percent of adults now own tablet computers, up from 34 percent in September." 2014 mobile predictions It's that time again. That's right, I'm talking about 2014 mobile marketing prediction time. If you want to look at last year's predictions, you can keep me honest (and see some of the stats for the space). To that end, I'm kicking off this post with additional current stats to set context around my 2014 predictions. Key Mobile/Social Statistics Global mobile subscriptions: 6,587.4 million (I [...]

Apple: People Spent $10 Billion On Apps In 2013

Apple app store logo Apps have turned into a nice little business for Apple. This morning the company issued a press release stating that app store users spent more than $10 billion on apps and digital content for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad in 2013. Under its 70/30 rule, Apple would have kept roughly $3 billion of that revenue. In the month of December alone the company said that users spent more than $1 billion and downloaded three billion apps. Overall, Apple says it has now paid developers more than $15 billion -- roughly half of which would have come this past year. According to app analytics pro [...]

Report: Apple Gains Smartphone Share But The iPad Slips

mobile-chart-growth-analytics-featured Ad network Chitika is out this morning with a post-holiday analysis of smartphone and tablet traffic. Based on "tens of millions of smartphone and tablet online ad impressions from the Chitika network," the study looked at North American internet traffic from December 20 to December 29, 2013. According to the study, the iPhone saw a nearly 2 point traffic-share gain while Android grew about 0.7 percent (Nexus devices). From the data below I infer that there's no mobile traffic growth for Windows Phones. It will take a little time to see if these traffic-percentage figures are mirrore [...]

Tablets Poised To Overtake Smartphones As Shopping Device Of Choice

tablet-ipad-money-featured When we talk about devices in mobile marketing, most marketers’ thoughts still jump directly to smartphones. And for good reason. They're cheaper and more portable than tablets (at least when subsidized by the carriers), and smartphones are a consumer’s constant companion. They also account for the largest market share of mobile devices. According to a recent industry survey 56% of adult Americans have a smartphone, while 35% of US citizens over the age of 16 own a tablet device. And if patterns established during past holiday seasons continue -- even to a lesser extent as the market be [...]

Apple: Games, Social And Video Dominate Top Apps Lists

Apple Best of 2013 Like everyone else Apple has released its year-end top lists. Below are the top iOS apps, including top free and top paid apps for both the iPhone and iPad. The lists are a mix of "incumbents" and "insurgents." Pandora remains in the top 10 (12 on the iPad list) and YouTube was number two on both free lists. The paid lists were all about games. On the top free iPhone list, social apps were clustered in the middle, with Twitter's Vine at number four and Twitter itself at 13. Google Maps, which saw a surge of downloads after it became available earlier this year, wound up at number five fo [...]

Top 5 Ways To Use Reviews For Better App Store Optimization (ASO)

3 App store optimization (ASO) is the process of improving an app's rank in an app store for search results related to the app. It's the app store equivalent of SEO for Web pages. Just like SEO, ASO involves working to build up a great search ranking to drive downloads. One of the best app store features to help app marketers with ASO is the reviews section. Never before have marketers had the ability to see exactly what their users are saying about their product in a single place, nicely sorted by their level of satisfaction. Reviews have clear use cases for app publishers in product dev [...]

Verdict: Samsung Owes Apple $290 Million More But It Won’t Matter

apple-logo-black The Judge (Lucy Koh) in the landmark Samsung-Apple patent trial in California ordered a partial retrial on damages. Today the damages case was sent to the jury, which deliberated and awarded Apple $290 million more according to AllThingsD. In total, Samsung owes Apple nearly a billion dollars in damages not counting legal fees. Yet for both companies, this doesn't end their global legal battle, nor does $1 billion matter much to Samsung. In the third quarter Samsung made roughly $9.6 billion in profit, roughly two-thirds of which come from the sale of mobile devices. Android is the do [...]

Android Tablets Outship iPads, Usage Still Favors Apple Devices

Image Credit: Gizmodo Using IDC third-quarter estimates of tablet shipments, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty has calculated that Android devices generated more sales revenue in Q3 than Apple iPads for the first time. Quoted in Fortune, Huberty reportedly said: "For the first time . . . Android devices accounted for a greater share of the market in revenue terms than iOS. Android revenue share reached 46.2% in 3Q13, for the first time exceeding iPad share of 45.6%." The chart below is the IDC shipments table on which Huberty based her assertion. If shipments are treated as sales then it's a relatively simp [...]
