Report: Despite Competition iPad Still 81 Percent Of Tablet Traffic

ipad-featured Later this morning, Apple is scheduled to announce new iPads: a "retina" Mini and a thinner and lighter large iPad. These announcements come amid intensifying competition (including pricing pressure) from Samsung, Google and Amazon. Firms that track device shipments, such as Gartner and IDC, have projected a major decline in the iPad's market share. However in North America at least the iPad is still responsible for 81 percent of all tablet traffic according to ad network Chitika. That 81 percent traffic share is down three points from 84 percent in June. Yet Chitika says that no sin [...]

Based on the iPhone smartphone precedent, various analyst firms have been anticipating the iPad would lose [...]

Study: Nexus 7 Usage Flat, Kindle Up Following Discounts

Amazon Original Kindle Fire Ad network Chitika has released data on the comparative traffic being driven by the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, prompted by the introduction of the new Nexus 7 in July. Chitika looked at North American tablet-based web traffic between June and August of this year. While Nexus 7 web traffic remained remarkably consistent during the period, Kindle's traffic increased, based largely on Amazon discounting to move devices ahead of the anticipated roll out of the next generation of Amazon tablets. What's the lesson? Price matters. In order to generate this report, Chitika examined "tens of [...]

Android Tablet Shipments Soar, Usage Hasn’t Shown Up Yet

Image Credit: Gizmodo Strategy Analytics came out with Q2 shipment estimates for tablets -- which are supposed to exceed PC sales by the end of this year on a global basis. It's now a critical market segment. The data show Android tablets with a solid "shipments share" lead over the iPad. What the numbers appear to reflect is two-thirds Android market share vs. iOS. However that's not reflected in actual usage, at least in North America, where the iPad has increased its share of Web traffic over Q1. Collectively, according to Chitika, non-iPad tablets (essentially Android) are driving roughly 16 percent o [...]

android-apple-ios Ad network Chitika has released data on iOS and Android usage throughout the day. Overall iOS is driving more Web traffic than Android (partly because of the iPad), but traffic coming from iOS devices is more "volatile" than Android traffic. In other words, Android usage is more consistent throughout the day, while iOS has greater peaks and valleys. The findings are based on "hundreds of millions of U.S. and Canadian smartphone- and tablet-based online ad impressions seen over the Chitika ad network" in May. Android and iOS traffic appears to peak at roughly the same time. Howeve [...]

The company has had a difficult year (in the press and on Wall Street) and is expected to emphasize software rather than hardware next week. Among the potential announcements are "iRadio," iOS 7 and a new version of OS X. However, we'll probably see some new Mac laptops and maybe a new iPad. In anticipation of iOS 7, ad network Chitika examined which version of iOS it was seeing on devices across its network. These data are from late May and cover billions of US and Canadian ad impressions. The graphic immedi [...]

Tablet Market Share: iPad Remains Dominant, Samsung Shows Growth

ipad-featured Regardless of what the IDCs, Strategy Analytics and Gartners show in terms of quarterly device shipments and marketshare forecasts, the "facts on the ground" continue to show the iPad driving far more traffic than any competing tablet device. That's reinforced by Chitika's new tablet traffic report. Based on millions of tablet-based impressions on its network during April, from the US and Canada, Chitika says that the iPad drove just over 81 percent of tablet traffic. Kindle Fire was second, with 7.4 percent, and all other tablets were together responsible for roughly 11 percent of traffic. [...]

Tablet Shipments To Overtake Laptops This Year — Report

Image Credit: Gizmodo Tech research firm IDC says in its latest forecast that tablet shipments will exceed what it calls "portable PCs" (laptops) this year. The firm reported negative 14 percent growth for the PC market overall in Q1 and says that negative growth trend will be reflected in the Q2 numbers as well. Tablets are expected to exceed all PC sales (desktops and laptops) by 2015. However I suspect it will happen more quickly, by next year. IDC also predicts that the bulk of sales will be at the lower-priced end of the market (read: Android). In addition, there will be more buying activity associated [...]

The new iOS and Android competitor is generating 5.3 percent of all BlackBerry traffic, which reflects a "doubling in usage share since the Z10’s US release 20 days prior." That's impressive until those figures are put into context. Chitika also told me that "BlackBerry-based Web traffic as a whole constitutes about 1 percent of all mobile Web traffic on our network." So, in fact, the Z10 is [...]
