July Mobile Data: Apple Gains, Google Top Mobile Site, Facebook Top App

smartphones ComScore released its July smartphone subscriber market share data for the US. The story is very similar to past months: the market continues to be a contest between Apple and Samsung, iOS and Android. In the handset category, the iPhone continued to be the top individual smartphone with Samsung gaining 2 points. All other makers were down. The Moto X has just become available and has yet to register. It remains to be seen whether it can reverse Motorola's long decline. For its part HTC has just launched an expensive branding campaign featuring actor Robert Downey Jr.  It's unlikely to [...]

Android Tablet Shipments Soar, Usage Hasn’t Shown Up Yet

Image Credit: Gizmodo Strategy Analytics came out with Q2 shipment estimates for tablets -- which are supposed to exceed PC sales by the end of this year on a global basis. It's now a critical market segment. The data show Android tablets with a solid "shipments share" lead over the iPad. What the numbers appear to reflect is two-thirds Android market share vs. iOS. However that's not reflected in actual usage, at least in North America, where the iPad has increased its share of Web traffic over Q1. Collectively, according to Chitika, non-iPad tablets (essentially Android) are driving roughly 16 percent o [...]

Smaller Phone Makers Challenge Samsung In Android Market

smartphones Just when it seemed like the Android market was becoming entirely synonymous with Samsung, smaller vendors appear to be gaining traction. The Korean company shipped more than 72 million units in the quarter compared to Apple's 31 million. However, both companies lost overall market share as LG, Lenovo and ZTE collectively gained 3.1 percentage points on the market leaders. Source: IDC Strategy Analytics released a competing re [...]

Only 30 Percent Of Smartphone Traffic On 4G Networks

smartphones In North America 70 percent of smartphone-based web traffic is operating on slower-than-4G wireless networks. Conversely only 30 percent of smartphone web traffic is coming from 4G networks, according to Chitika. This modest penetration figure makes sense because 4G networks are still rolling out and not all handsets are 4G compatible. For example only the iPhone 5 works with 4G. The 4 and 4S are restricted to 3G. However there are dozens of 4G-enabled Android handsets on the market. These data and findings are based on "tens of millions of smartphone-based online ad impressions recorde [...]

Apple Now Shows iOS “Fragmentation” Just Like Android

iphone-apps-ios-featured Android's "fragmentation" used to be a great deal worse that it is today, with the majority of users on older versions of the platform. However Android's developer dashboard now shows that just under 59 percent of Android users are on OS 4.0 or higher (Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean). Duplicating the long-standing Android developer dashboard, Apple just introduced a comparable developer display. It shows what Chitika reported several weeks ago, that over 90 percent of iPhone and iPad users are on the latest version of the OS. Apple's next OS, iOS 7, is now out in a developer re [...]

Report: iOS Has More Traffic, But More “Volatile” Than Android

android-apple-ios Ad network Chitika has released data on iOS and Android usage throughout the day. Overall iOS is driving more Web traffic than Android (partly because of the iPad), but traffic coming from iOS devices is more "volatile" than Android traffic. In other words, Android usage is more consistent throughout the day, while iOS has greater peaks and valleys. The findings are based on "hundreds of millions of U.S. and Canadian smartphone- and tablet-based online ad impressions seen over the Chitika ad network" in May. Android and iOS traffic appears to peak at roughly the same time. Howeve [...]

Study: Nearly 90 Percent Of Apple Users On Latest Version Of OS

android-apple-ios Next week is Apple's much-anticipated developer conference in San Francisco. The company has had a difficult year (in the press and on Wall Street) and is expected to emphasize software rather than hardware next week. Among the potential announcements are "iRadio," iOS 7 and a new version of OS X. However, we'll probably see some new Mac laptops and maybe a new iPad. In anticipation of iOS 7, ad network Chitika examined which version of iOS it was seeing on devices across its network. With New Gmail And Chrome Integrations, Is Google Trying To “Colonize” iOS Devices?

New Gmail for iOS Is Google simply trying to create a better user experience on the iPhone and iPad or is it trying to "colonize" iOS with its apps? It all depends on your point of view -- though, it's probably a bit of both. When the new Gmail app for iOS was released May 6, immediately, inflammatory headlines appeared, suggesting that Google was "taking over the iPhone." However, that's not exactly the case. Users of the new Gmail app have the (default) option to go directly to the native versions of YouTube and Google Maps, as well as open Chrome via links in email. Previously, such links would have op [...]
