.Guru(s) Galore: New Top-Level Domain Passes 50K Registrations

dotguru Nevermind that the label/title "guru" has been getting mocked for years. That's not stopping anyone from registering domains using the new .guru top-level domain (gTLD). In fact, according to nTLDStats.com, .guru recently became the first of the new gTLDs to pass 50,000 registrations. That puts it ahead of the far less annoying .berlin, .photography, .email and .link, all of which round out the top five most popular new domains. Domain Incite reports that .guru just passed the 50,000 mark on Wednesday, if you exclude some infrastructural domains. And it reached this level in just [...]

Could “Liking” A Brand On Facebook Waive Your Legal Rights?

social-media-dislike-thumb-down-featured There is a very disturbing trend in the world of corporate terms and conditions. Consumers (and small merchants) are increasingly being forced by fine-print clauses into binding arbitration to resolve disputes with companies. The very pro-business US Supreme Court not long ago ruled this was entirely legal. What it means as a practical matter is that individuals give up their right to sue in court as well as the right to join together in class action litigation against corporations. The problem is that consumers, even if they're permitted to sue individually, won't because they don't h [...]

Former Yahoo COO de Castro Made Tidy $3.8 Million Per Month

yahoo-featured Yahoo COO and former Googler Henrique de Castro was fired by CEO Marissa Mayer in January. At the time, there was considerable reporting (and surprise) about the size of his golden parachute, which Forbes said was worth a whopping $109 million. He wasn't eligible for all of it, however, given a four year vesting period. He was the first significant hire Mayer made as Yahoo CEO. USAToday reports that de Castro actually collected $58 million -- or the equivalent of $3.87 million per month for the 15 months of his brief tenure at Yahoo. Much of that compensation was tied up in Yahoo stock. [...]

google-earnings-data-600 Google announced quarterly revenues this afternoon. The company said it had "consolidated revenues" of $15.42 billion (including Motorola), up 19 percent vs. last year. However, neither the topline nor earnings per share beat financial analysts' expectations. Accordingly, the stock is down nearly 6 percent in after-hours trading. Below are some of the highlights from the earnings release and presentation: Total revenues: $15.42 billion (vs. $12.95 billion in Q1 2013) Google sites: $10.47 billion (up 21 percent) Network: $3.40 billion (up 4 percent) Non-US revenue: $8.76 billion [...]

Yahoo Q1 Beats Expectations, Search Stronger Than Display

yahoo-featured Today, Yahoo posted quarterly revenues of $1.13 billion. That's down 1 percent year over year but still modestly beat financial analysts' consensus estimates. Revenue ex-TAC was up 1 percent. Non Non-GAAP net earnings per share were $0.38, which was flat but also beat expectations. The company has about $4.6 billion in cash on hand. Some are celebrating these results and others see them as mediocre. Both search and display revenue were up year over year. Display revenue was up slightly (ex-TAC) but price per display ad was down. While display was somewhat soft, search was a st [...]

Google Takes “SpyView” Wiretapping Appeal To SCOTUS

Google Street View car Google seeks US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) review of a US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision, which affirmed a lower court denial of Google's motion to dismiss a class action lawsuit brought after the 2010 Street View private "payload data" capture revelations. Plaintiffs argue that Google violated the federal "Wiretap Act" when it intercepted their private email and other communications during Street View data collection. The Wiretap Act makes it illegal to “intentionally intercept . . . any wire, oral, or electronic communication" and to "use or disclose information that is obtained [...]

Second Apple Patent Suit Vs. Samsung Ropes In Google

apple-google-featured If you're tired of news about smartphone-related patent litigation, you're not alone. However, there's more to come as Apple and Samsung's long-running patent feud appears no closer to resolution today than it was two years ago. The parties return to court this week for another round of patent-for-tat. The new case presents five Apple claims against Samsung and two counterclaims against Apple. Among the Apple claims against Samsung are "slide to unlock" and "tap to search" (on a map) or call a phone number. The damages sought by each side are curiously unbalanced. Apple wants a $40 roya [...]
