After 15-Hour Sale, Google Says All Glass Units Are Sold Out

glass-sold-out-600 Google's one-day public sale of Google Glass was apparently a success. The online store where Glass and its accessories are sold to Glass Explorers now lists all five colors of Glass as "out of stock." During the day Tuesday, Google listed the white ("Cotton") version of Glass as out of stock while continuing to sell the other four colors. Google isn't sharing any specific sales figures, but a spokesperson sent out this statement a short time ago about the device going out of stock: "We were getting through our stock faster than we expected, so we decided to shut the store down. Whi [...]

Download Index: Android Beats iTunes But Not In Revenue

Google Play iOS app store App Annie Index App Annie's new Q1 Market Index shows Google Play beating iTunes in terms of app downloads by a significant 45 percent. However, Apple's App Store still generates 85 percent more revenue than its Google-owned rival -- though the gap is closing. App Annie said that Google Play download growth was largely driven by emerging markets, while Apple revenue growth came from China and the US. The top download market for Google Play was the US but the top revenue market was Japan. For iOS the US occupied both positions.  Currently in the US, Android controls 52.1 percent of the smartphone [...]

Google Offers Sneak Peek At Latest Google Glass Software Update

google-glass-600 Google Glass owners have been waiting since December for what used to be monthly software updates. The wait will be over later this week. Google offered a preview of the changes that are coming in the XE16 software update, which is due to be pushed out to Explorers later this week. The biggest change mentioned is an upgrade to KitKat, the current version of Android software, as the underlying software that Glass will run. With it, Google says battery life will improve and Glass will be more reliable and easier to update in the future. It also means Glass developers can take advantage of [...]

Report: Amazon Releasing Smartphone Later This Year

amazon-logo According to a report appearing in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) this afternoon, Amazon will, in fact, be releasing a smartphone in the second half of the year. This development had been rumored for a some time. The WSJ says that Amazon hopes to distinguish the phone with a 3D display that doesn't require glasses. However, that by itself is unlikely to differentiate the phone sufficiently to ensure success. It's probably the case that an Amazon smartphone will be like a smaller version of Kindle Fire: a device that would use the Amazon app store, with its roughly 200,000 Android-based ap [...]

The “App-Churn Window”: 60 Pct. Of Users Might Never Return

smartphone-shutterstock The strategic importance of apps is now self-evident, with roughly 90 percent of mobile internet time being spent there, according to Nielsen. However if companies' apps don't engage users quickly and effectively, they may churn -- never to return. That's according to Localytics, which offers some very useful data and advice about what it calls the "app-churn window." The longer the interval between the initial app use and a second use, the greater the risk of churn the company says. Localytics analyzed app usage patterns of iOS devices and found the following "rules": The "me [...]

Want Google Glass? Google’s Selling It For One Day On April 15

google-glass-frame-600 Although a wider consumer launch of Google Glass is still expected to happen later this year, the Glass Explorer program is running along and slowly getting bigger as Google occasionally sends out additional invites to interested people. It's going to get a little bigger next week, too, as Google forgoes the invite process and opens up the Explorer program to any US adult that wants to buy the device. From Google's announcement: Next Tuesday, April 15th at 6am PDT, we're opening up some spots in the Glass Explorer Program. Any adult in the US* can become an Explorer by visiting our sit [...]

Google Glass Sets Its Sights On The Enterprise With ‘Glass At Work’ Program

google-glass-600-cclicense Google has a vision for Google Glass, and it's not just about making a consumer-friendly wearable device. Google also wants the device to appeal to businesses that want to use Glass to serve their customers and improve their bottom line. To that end, Google launched a new program late Monday night called "Glass at Work." The idea is to make it easier for businesses that want to take advantage of Glass in some way to connect with developers that want to serve the enterprise market. Something [we're] very excited about is how Explorers are using Glass to drive their businesses forw [...]

Video Parody: How Google Glass Changed This Guy’s Life In All The Wrong Ways

glass-parody-video Darin DiNapoli has created a video parody of the average Google Glass Explorer named "Google Glass Adventures by Teddy Miller." I don't want to ruin the video by giving away all the lines but... It makes fun of how many Google Glass Explorers really can't afford to by Google Glass but they do anyway just to be part of the exclusive group. Then it goes into how Explorers aren't good with women and how you can become a photographer with ease. In short, the video mocks how this man felt Google Glass would change his life in such a dramatic positive way, and well, it hasn't. Here is the v [...]

LG, Microsoft Show Some Life In ComScore Smartphone Report

smartphones-600px Much like the comScore top 50 internet sites report or its search market share reports, which rarely change much, the firm's US smartphone report has similarly become flat with little changing from month to month. The new numbers are now out for February. The top two OEM spots are consistently Apple and Samsung. On the OS side, Apple and Google gain or lose a point or fraction of a point and generally everyone else is flat or down. This month is really no exception except that LG has gained a bit of share among handset OEMs and Microsoft/Windows saw a modest gain on the platform side. [...]

Google Glass Turns 2: Here Are 60 Brands & Businesses Using It

google-glass-600 Google Glass turns two years old today. It was April 4, 2012, when Google announced an idea that was actually called "Project Glass" at the time. Although the device still hasn't had a wide consumer launch, much has happened to Google Glass in these two years. It's being used in education at colleges and universities, medical schools and even veterinary schools. Police, firefighters and other emergency responders are testing Glass. There are hundreds of apps available, but only about 40 that Google has vetted and approved for inclusion in the official Glassware directory. Google Gla [...]

Yelp Versus Foursquare? Who’s Winning In Mobile/Local For Marketers?

yelp-foursquare For business travelers, it's easy to see why mobile access to discovery tools like Google Places, Yelp and Foursquare is so critical. Determining where to go to get coffee, lunch, printing help, dinner, drinks, etc., often happens at the last minute. What about non-business travelers? Yes, we all have our favorite places to eat, preferred dry cleaners, dentists, doctors, and so on. But how do we know we are finding the best places? Or what if our dentist moves? Or our dry cleaner continually over starches our shirts? What about life changes that might mandate a new day care? Or a [...]

Microsoft Build Conference Microsoft's annual Build Conference kicked off in San Francisco today with perhaps the biggest news for marketers being the unveiling of its "Cortana" virtual assistant, a challenger to Apple's Siri and Google Now. However, also see our  separate story on Search Engine Land that dives deeper into Cortana:  Part Siri, Part Google Now Microsoft Announces “Cortana” Virtual Assistant [...]

In A Mobile World, Not All Mobile Performs Equally For Advertisers

bing ads clickers It seems that every time I ride the elevator at my office building, every one of my fellow riders has a mobile device out -- checking e-mail, making a restaurant reservation, even booking a trip... Whether I'm at bus stop, in line at Starbucks or dining in the cafeteria, almost everyone I see is peering at a mobile device. This trend is not simply anecdotal. According to eMarketer, global smartphone users will top 1.75 billion in 2014, close to one quarter of the world's population, and growth will continue on a fast-paced trajectory through 2017. Mobile smartphone adoption is occurring [...]

Apple hopes that opening up iAd will bring new categories of advertisers and boost interest in iAd overall. The collateral on the site indicates Apple's ambition to make iAd more democratic: Whether you’re an app developer or a filmmaker, a small business owner or an experienced advertiser, reaching the people most likely to be interested in your product [...]
