Google Glass App Landscape (Finally) Showing Signs Of Growth

google-glass-io-1920 It has a long, long way to go to rival app stores like those for Android and iOS (and I doubt it'll ever rival their size, actually), but the Google Glass app landscape is finally starting to show signs of life. There are hundreds of apps available for Glass, but the majority of them haven't passed through Google's review process and reached the official Glassware directory. A lot of those "unofficial" apps are being promoted by their developers and users in various online Glass-related forums and communities, and many are very popular even without Google's formal approval and inclusion i [...]

Roost Enables Web Push Notifications, Coming Soon To Mobile Browsers

roost A company called Roost has developed publisher push notifications for PC web browsers. This offers a potential new channel to deliver content or marketing messages via the browser (which can complement or substitute for email). But what's even more interesting is the prospect of extending this to mobile web browsers. Currently mobile users can only receive notifications if they have an app installed. Roost's capability means that publishers and marketers could send notifications to users who haven't installed their apps. This would be significant in general but especially for verticals [...]

Report: Progressive Insurance Top Mobile Advertiser Of Q2

mobile-devices-trends Mobile analytics provider Adomic released a Q2 mobile advertising report. It covers a range of metrics and issues; among them, top mobile advertisers, most used ad formats and a comparison of programmatic media buying online vs. in mobile. The top mobile advertiser in the US in Q2 was Progressive Insurance. Microsoft came in at number three and Amazon was number nine. On the PC internet, retailers are the top spending advertiser category. Yet there are only a couple on this list (depending on how AT&T and Verizon are counted). There was also a significant gap between some major adver [...]

Does Mobile Advertising Work?

advertising_mobile_devices_hand We've all heard for several years that the effectiveness of advertising -- print, television, radio and even digital -- is suffering from the law of diminishing returns. While there is some truth to that phenomenon, advertising in all forms is far from dead. In fact, since 1926 (with the exception of a dip during World War II), ad spending has moved along at a regular clip, steadily accounting for a little over 1% of the U.S.'s (growing) GDP. What has changed is the mix of where advertising dollars are spent. Why the history lesson? Sometimes the best way to predict the future is by loo [...]

The Shelf Life Of A Mobile Ad: Shorter Than You May Think

shutterstock_alarmclock When a user loads a webpage, they aren't doing so with the intent of clicking on an ad. Yet, millions and millions of users do just that every single day. However, this isn't just a numbers game -- intelligent marketers (like those who are reading this article) are looking to get the most out of their advertising spend by targeting the right users in the right way at the right time. But even when an ad is shown based on any number of criteria, what's its proverbial shelf life for that user? Two seconds? One minute? Five minutes? Within this article, we'll be analyzing a week's worth of a [...]

Opening Mobile Wallet Opportunities For Marketers

believing seeing is There is a lot of buzz about mobile wallets -- mostly, the challenges facing mass adoption of mobile payments. This has left many marketers to wonder how they will be able to implement innovative mobile payment technologies into their mobile/brand strategies. While the industry focuses its attention on m-payments (and lack thereof), marketers who want to stand out have a unique opportunity to get ahead -- with the non-payment side of mobile wallets. It Starts With The Consumer Consumers have made their preferences clear -- they want a shopping companion. Mobile wallets eliminate the need [...]

Yahoo Seeks To Grow Mobile Display With Flurry Acquisition

yahoo-mobile-phones-featured There was a rumor circulating last week that Yahoo was buying Flurry for north of $350 million. That rumor (though not the price) was confirmed today when Yahoo officially announced it was buying the company. Flurry was being shopped apparently and Yahoo needed a mobile ad network/platform that extends its reach beyond the boundaries of Yahoo itself. Flurry got the nod: When completed, our acquisition of Flurry will be a meaningful step for the company and reinforces our commitment to building and supporting useful, inspiring and beautiful mobile applications and monetization solutions. By [...]

Understanding The Complexity Of Mobile Ad Attribution

advertising_mobile_devices_hand In this complex and fragmented marketing landscape where a consumer's purchasing journey moves from desktop to mobile to offline channels, measuring the contribution of all these touch points is exceedingly complicated. Recently, one of these media has become increasingly challenging: mobile. While consumer usage of mobile devices is ballooning, mobile ad spend is still lagging behind. Marketers know that consumers are on their smartphones and tablets 24/7 and that this usage will only continue to grow, but a lot of uncertainty remains around attribution and how to accurately measure mobile [...]

ShareThis Goes Mobile With An AT&T Text To Share Button

mobile-phone-stock ShareThis, aiming to help publishers better tap into peer-to-peer messaging, announced yesterday that it has created an AT&T Text to Share button. It's a natural move since publishers are starting to take note of readers' shift to mobile devices. Last month, Radium One added a WhatsApp button to its Po.st suite of buttons. WhatsApp, which is in the process of being acquired by Facebook, has 500 million global users who send as many as 64 million messages a day and there's some evidence that WhatsApp share buttons are popular with readers. SMS isn't as sexy as WhatsApp or SnapChat, [...]

How To Do Location-Based Push Marketing Without Going Too Far

mobile-target-location-targeting-shutterstock Location-based marketing has been described as "the intersection of people, places, and media." This evolving new capability centers around the idea of understanding your customers' context -- such as their current location, their location history and their current or historical beacon proximity -- to deliver more relevant, timely content as a result. Enabled by apps, mobile marketing leaders are using location-based audience segmentation to craft smarter messages to engage their mobile customers and win a greater share of smartphone and tablet screen time. However, brands must tread [...]

Eight U.S. Firms Control 80 Percent Of Worldwide Mobile Ad Revenue

money-growth-chart-featured As we saw yesterday, Yahoo is struggling to get its display business back in black. Data aggregator eMarketer says that will happen, but that the company's share of the global advertising market will fall to fourth place -- after Microsoft. Google and Facebook will continue to be the top global advertising players, though Google far exceeds others in its overall share. Yet, even Google is under pressure from intensifying competition and the increasing "mobilization" of the internet. In mobile, Facebook has just under half of Google's global ad share according to eMarketer. Twitter is num [...]

mobile-payment-wallet-featured In its latest round of reports, Custora claims mobile e-commerce revenue is set to reach $50 billion by the end of this year, up nearly $8 billion since last year, and an astounding $48 billion since 2010. Analyzing e-commerce data from more than 100 retailers, 70 million consumers and $10 billion in transactions, Custora found mobile traffic to e-commerce sites has increased from three-percent to nearly 37 percent in the last four years, while mobile e-commerce revenue climbed from $2.2 billion in 2010 to $42.8 billion last year. Custora's numbers prove mobile devices continue to take a [...]

Goodbye Email, Hello Rich Media Messaging

email vs. mobile messaging "Give us your email address and we'll give you great deals." These seductive words charm millions of customers every day eager to get a good deal from their favorite retailer. Unfortunately, soon after signing up for these deals, the emails often hit the junk mail folder, never to be seen by the intended recipient. With Millennial preferences changing, perhaps it is time to evaluate our digital marketing strategies. Instead of replicating the wheel by sending the same kinds of email messages to mobile devices, we should get a little smarter about how we are direct marketing. Goodbye [...]

Forecast: In 2015, There Will Be About 4 Android Devices For Every Windows Or Mac/iOS Device In 2015

android-mascot-featured Android devices already beat Windows, Mac and iOS devices by a wide margin, and a new forecast from Gartner sees that growing even more in 2015. PC Get Slight Boost, Still Outpaced By Mobile Gartner predicts "a relative revival of the global PC market" this year, driven by enterprise upgrades. However it says tablets will outsell PCs next year (which has been predicted before). The PC now lives in a multi-device world -- getting larger with wearables -- and will never again have the centrality they once had. I'm sure this is discussed in a report somewhere; however the Gartner pre [...]

Study: Only 22 Percent Of Top 200 Apps Using Deep Links

mobile-apps-featured Among the top 200 mobile apps only 22 percent are using "deep links" from their websites into their mobile apps. This is according to an analysis by URX. Deep links are those that send a user from a website to a relevant page, piece of content or search result within a mobile app as opposed to the app's homepage. Google and Facebook are both promoting this as a way to webify the mobile app universe. URX details its methodology in its blog post. Essentially the firm looked for "tag sets proposed by Twitter, Facebook, Google, or URX omnilink tags." Below are the findings by platform -- mea [...]

Mobile Ad Revenues To Surpass Newspapers, Magazines, Radio This Year — Forecast

mobile-devices-featured According to a new forecast from eMarketer, total media spending in the US will see its largest increase in a decade reaching $180.1 billion. The firm says that the growth will be lead by TV and mobile. Overall digital ad spending will represent almost 30 percent of all US ad spending this year according to eMarketer, which bases its forecasts on a wide range of third party data including other firms’ media spending forecasts. The eMarketer forecast predicts that mobile advertising will represent roughly 10 percent of all media ad spending. That would mean it would exceed tradition [...]

iPhone Has Largest Market Share Growth Over Past 3 Years

iphone-5-featured With US smartphone penetration among mobile subscribers now at 70 percent, comScore released its May smartphone data yesterday. Compared with last month there isn't much change in the numbers. Android remains the top OS, the iPhone is the top individual device and Facebook is the most widely distributed and used mobile app. When we look at the data over the past three years however it becomes more interesting. BlackBerry has seen a precipitous decline in share (you knew that). Microsoft's share is essentially flat and so is Android's (despite millions more devices in the market in real numb [...]

Android Wear & Phone Google has announced the first batch of Apps for Android Wear devices. There are 24 in all. The full initial group is below: These apps need to be installed on your Android phone before they can be installed on Android Wear devices. Users cannot install apps on Android smartwatches independently of the phone. The LG G Watch and the Samsung Gear Live, the first devices released that run Android Wear, have received mixed reviews. Many, including me, are wai [...]

Essential Mobile SEO Resources

folders-files-resources- shutterstock It occurred to me as I was making my personal site responsive and adding recommended resources that I've been doing this column for over five years and have yet to share with you readers a comprehensive list of the mobile SEO resources I recommend. This month, I'd like to right that wrong by citing the people, publications and tools that I find essential for mobile SEO, all in one place. People Pierre Far - Pierre said at one point that he wants to be the Matt Cutts of mobile search, and along with Maile Ohye (and sometimes even Matt Cutts), that’s the role he plays at [...]

4 Data-Driven Tips For A Successful Mobile Marketing Plan

mobile-devices-trends Mobile marketing is coming into its own. With the 2013 mobile e-commerce market valued at $43 billion and mobile traffic making up nearly 50% of site visits in the first quarter of 2014, the savviest retailers -- e-commerce, brick-and-mortar and omni-channel alike -- are investing in building out dedicated mobile marketing teams and capabilities. These numbers come from the Custora E-Commerce Pulse Mobile Report, soon to be published by Custora (disclosure: my employer). These metrics and others hint at the size of the opportunity for marketing teams that are able to harness the power [...]
