For Mobile App Monetization, Free(mium) Is Winning

smartphone-shutterstock According to a survey based study, jointly released by App Annie and IDC this week, the "freemium" model is the most popular way for developers and publishers to make money on their mobile apps. In-app advertising is another popular and successful method -- though only 42 percent of developer survey respondents were using in-app ads. The third most popular method (far behind the other two) is paid-app purchases. You can either consider WhatsApp a freemium model (free for the first year) or a paid app model (annual subscription). The same goes for apps such as the New York Times: the app [...]

Traditional PCs Shrink To 10 Percent Of Device Market In 2015

Multiscreen Millward Brown IT consulting firm Gartner projected today that overall device shipments (not sales) would increase this year by nearly 7 percent vs. 2013. Sale of traditional PCs still represent a drag on the industry, although tablet substitution for PCs is supposed to slow. Recognizing the importance of addressing all platforms now Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced today (as expected) that Microsoft Office would be available for the iPad as a set of native apps: We’re bringing Office, the gold standard in getting things done, to the iPad. A billion people rely on Office every day, and we’ve wor [...]

Among Top 100 Etail Sites Only 9 Pct Using Responsive Design

mobile-responsive-design-featured Despite being a recommended mobile "best practice," only 9 percent of the top 100 e-retail sites are using responsive design. That's according to the latest edition of The Search Agency's Mobile Experience Scorecard. Previously, the agency evaluated and ranked the mobile sites of the Fortune 100 and top 100 traditional retailers. In this ranking exercise, The Search Agency considered a range of criteria, including site/page load time, site format, search box, shopping cart, sign in, social media buttons and app presence. Each category offered a potential score of five points. Those were [...]

As Mobile Revolutionizes Commerce, How Marketers Are Taking Advantage

AmericanApparel-ShoppingAssistant How many of your daily tasks would be nearly impossible (or at least more difficult) without mobile devices, e-mail and the internet? It's tough to imagine accomplishing even the simplest of tasks, especially when it comes to buying and selling goods. Mobile has revolutionized commerce, including the way consumers engage, research and ultimately purchase products. On the flip side, advertisers now have more ways to reach and influence their audiences. Retailers are now witnessing first-hand how traditional "brick-and-mortar" ideology is rapidly transforming into a new "brick-and-click" real [...]

Survey: Nearly Half Of Americans Interested In Wearable Tech

Pebble smartwatch While Google Glass has not broken into the mainstream, smartwatches and fitness wristbands may be on the cusp of doing so. The CEO of Pebble (smartwatch) told Fortune that it had sold 400,00 watches in 2013 and the company's investors expect revenues to double this year. According to survey data (November 2013) from Nielsen, 70 percent of US consumers are aware of “wearables" and roughly 15 percent currently own and use some form wearable technology. Among that 15 percent here's the breakdown: Fitness wristbands -- 61 percent Smartwatches -- 45 percent Mobile health tracking -- de [...]

Study Confirms Smartphones Now #1 Screen, Beating TV

smartphones-featured A report released this week by Millward Brown takes a quantitative and qualitative look at multiscreen activity from a number of perspectives. The report is based on a global survey (n=12,000 respondents, 30 countries). The US sample was 444 people, with some behavioral monitoring and interviews. I'm going to discuss just a few of the findings. However, there's a great deal of interesting material in the report, which is free. While this has been asserted by others in the past, Millward Brown confirmed that in the US daily smartphone screen time has now surpassed TV. That's also true wor [...]

Count Incoming Calls Right To Maximize Cross-Platform Marketing Returns

call-phone-600 Calls are in -- in a big way. The adoption of mobile and ease of satisfying a near-immediate search need with a quick phone call have fueled the universal acceptance of calls as a key engagement and conversion indicator. All direct response advertisers -- regardless of size or sophistication -- understand and appreciate the value of a call. As attribution conversations heat up and marketers look for ways to validate the performance of their various ad campaigns, many are adopting calls as a cross-media performance metric for their desktop and mobile search campaigns. With this growth, ho [...]

Motorola, LG, Fossil First Brands To Launch Android Wear

Moto 360 watch Shortly after Google announced Android Wear this morning, Motorola, Fossil and LG came out with their own associated announcements. Engadget reports that LG's "G Watch" (presumably for Google) will arrive next quarter and be aggressively priced. Motorola, which was just sold by Google to Lenovo, is launching a watch called Motorola 360 (see video below). Of the two it appears to be the more interesting one -- because it's round faced. However Motorola says "Moto 360 will be available in a variety of styles globally," so there will probably also be rectangles. Fossil is also an early Andr [...]

Android Wear: Google Announces Smartwatch

google-android-wear-600 Google today announced "Android wear." While this could allow for a range of wearables (and probably will in the future), what the company previewed in two videos were smartwatches. The user experience appears to be based on a combination of Google Now notifications and voice search ("OK Google"). There's also a developer preview being made available today. Google anticipates that Android-based wearables (beyond Glass) will become yet another platform for Android developers. The company said that it has designed an entirely new UI "for this form factor" (watches). In addition, in a blog [...]

Google Releases New Tools For AdMob Including Full Google Analytics Integration

Google Admob Logo Today, Google will announce new features for its mobile ad platform AdMob at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. The new features are powered by Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager. Rather than having to access AdMob and Analytics from separate interfaces, app developers can now get performance reporting from the AdMob home screen and a new Analyze tab right within AdMob. On the Analyze tab a dropdown menu, shown in the screenshot below, allows users to switch between the full set of reporting for individual apps. The home screen features a combination of reporting f [...]

Yahoo Has 500 Working On Mobile, Up 5-10X From Past

Bi92x4GCcAIbXqc Yahoo's betting big on mobile, to the degree of having increased the number of those working on mobile to 500 people -- a 5-to-10-times increase since before Marissa Mayer took over as CEO. Those figures, along with other tidbits mostly heard before, were part of a keynote conversation with Mayer at the 4A’s Transformation conference — the annual gathering of the American Association of Advertising Agencies. Mayer also spoke of a "Content Pyramid," three core areas that Yahoo is focused on: search, email and digital magazines, echoing what she said earlier this year at CES. [...]

Omni-Channel & Mobile-Focused Marketing Aren’t Mutually Exclusive, Stupid

mobile-devices-analytics-featured Okay, so the title's not as catchy as James Carville's famous rallying cry or even Aaron Strout's recent usage of it on Marketing Land last week. And I don't think Mr. Strout -- or anyone who holds the opinion that mobile-focused marketing is only possible at the expense of having a good user experience across all platforms -- is stupid. But I do take exception with the unfortunate trend of claiming that focusing on a mobile context is somehow a thing of the past simply because users are accessing the web from a number of different devices. Yes, we must stop assuming that mobile users [...]

How Mobile Apps Can Nurture Brand Loyalty: Stories From SXSWi

sxsw-interactive-logo Brands may think they’ve got it made when they’ve enticed a customer to download and install their mobile app. After all, they’ve gotten a coveted spot on that ever-present mobile device. But there’s so much more opportunity when it comes to nurturing customer loyalty. That’s the conclusion of a panel of mobile experts who spoke at South By Southwest Interactive in Austin on Saturday. The session, titled "Mobile loyalty lifecycle: a battle for screen-time,” featured Michael Griffith, director of user experience at WPP app development agency Bottle Rocket, along with Ken Todd of [...]

FTC Kids apps report Nielsen released a new cross platform report. Among other things it compares time spent with various media. TV remains the king of all media by time spent per day. That's followed by traditional radio and then smartphones. The report also compares app vs. mobile web usage by time spent. While Men and women spend roughly the same amounts of time accessing the internet on smartphones, women spend roughly 5 hours a month more than men using tablets. Smartphone usage As the chart above indicates 89 percent of smartphone internet time is spent in using apps. Eleven percent of time is s [...]

Study: 60 Percent Of Adults Switch Screens During The Day

facebook-mobile-phones-featured Echoing a 2012 study by Google, Facebook this morning released findings from a new research about multiple device usage. While offering some different figures and percentages it essentially backs up the earlier Google results, which show that people use multiple devices throughout the day and for different purposes. GfK carried out the research among 2,000 US adults.  The research found that "more than 60 percent of online adults in the US use at least two devices everyday and almost one quarter use three devices." It also reported that in excess of 40 percent start on one device and [...]

As “Cortana” Approaches, Remembering Microsoft’s Other Digital Assistant: Ms. Dewey

msdewey & cortana Microsoft is apparently readying its own digital assistant called "Cortana," to take on Apple's Siri and Google Now. Hopefully, Cortana will see more love than Microsoft's other assistant that you have probably long forgotten about. Ms. Dewey. Ms. Dewey? She was an experimental interface launched in October 2006 for Microsoft's search engine Live Search (now called Bing). Actually, she was more an underground marketing campaign. She gained buzz because she was an assistant with attitude, if she had issues with what you searched for. Howard Stern? As this Marketplace report from the ti [...]

Samsung Devices Driving Almost 60 Percent Of Android Traffic

Galaxy S5 Samsung overwhelmingly dominates North American Android traffic, according to new data from Chitika. The findings are based on "tens of millions of U.S. and Canadian Android-based online ad impressions" from February.  Chitika looked at all Android devices (tablets and smartphones) on its network and found that the Korean company has a 55.5 percent traffic share. Amazon's Kindle devices are second with an 8.2 share. However Chitika says that Kindle growth has stalled and that Google is the only company outside Samsung that saw Android traffic growth since Q4. Looking at the breakdo [...]

Android Tablets: 62 Pct. Of Sales But Only 23 Pct. Of Traffic

android-featured Gartner released new estimates of 2013 tablet sales on a global basis. The firm said that Android saw its market share go from 46 percent in 2012 to 62 percent last year. Apple's share fell from 53 percent to 36 percent accordingly. As with the smartphone market in the US and selected other markets, Apple remains the single largest individual vendor. Yet again, very strangely, Android shipments and alleged market share don't line up with actual internet traffic figures. Below are data from StatCounter that reflect global internet traffic from tablets. Unless the StatCounter da [...]

Other car makers that are part of the program include BMW, Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan  and Toyota among a few others. Five Must-Have Mobile Elements To Incorporate Into Your Marketing

mobile-apps-200px Take a look around any party, office or public event and you’ll see someone texting on their smartphone or checking Facebook on their tablet. Adults actually now spend more time on mobile media than they do on newspapers and magazines combined, and some experts are predicting mobile Internet usage will overtake desktop browsing this year. On a practical level, this means that if you’re not incorporating mobile into your integrated marketing strategies, you are missing a huge opportunity to connec [...]
