mobile-devices-trends Mobile is quickly becoming one of the most important (if not the most important) channels for marketers to focus on. As more and more users do more and more on their smart phones and tablets, understanding the needs and wants of prospects and customers is critical. On the heels of mobile/internet analyst extraordinaire Mary Meeker's now famous Internet Trends presentation -- and with a nod to the fact that we are halfway through 2014 -- the timing seems right to take a look at some key trends in mobile and location-based marketing. The Trends Within Ms. Meeker's report, it's interes [...]

android wear watches Google's Android Wear smartwatches are here! Well, almost. Those from Samsung and LG are available for pre-order now, with delivery early next month. A third from Motorola arrives later this summer. Should you go for one of the July releases and if so, which one? Or should you wait on Motorola? Here's our guide that may help. Want Google Now For Your Wrist? What's especially unique about Android Wear devices compared to other smartwatches like the Pebble or the Galaxy Gear is Google Now integration. Anyone who uses Google Now on their phone already -- and loves it -- may want to consider [...]

Google I/O Big Takeaway: Android Will Be Everywhere

android-600 The big theme of the Google Keynote at its developer conference was "Android everywhere." That wasn't an official slogan or mantra, but it was the ambition behind the many announcements: Android Wear, Android Auto, Android TV. Google wants to put Android powered screens on your wrist, in your car and on your TV, everywhere you're likely to be throughout the day. In addition, its Drive/Docs/Cloud-related enterprise announcements were about making Google the center of work. It's interesting that Google is not ceding anything or any category to Apple, Microsoft or Amazon. Indeed, it's emula [...]

google-android-wear-600 Ready for a smart watch from Google? Well, Google's not actually making them. But the first smart watches based on its Android Wear platform are now available from LG and Samsung. Well, available very soon. Google has said both will be offered for purchase via its Google Play today, though they've yet to appear. When they do, we'll update with pricing information. Meanwhile, watch this space. As for Motorola, its Moto 360 smart watch will be coming in "the coming months," Google says. [...]

Android: Now More Than 1 Billion Active Users Per Month

google-io14-600b Google opened its annual developers conference today with some staggering statistics about the growth of its Android mobile operating system. Sundar Pichai told the packed keynote audience that there are now more than one billion active Android users per month, up from about 530 million at last year's I/O conference. He said Google is going to report monthly active users going forward, rather than the general activation count that it used to share. Pichai also shared these stats about Android user activity: Android users send 20 billion texts per day. They take 93 million selfi [...]

google-io14-lobby-600 During the keynote of Google's annual developers conference today --  Google I/O 2014 -- the company shared how it will be bringing Android beyond phones and tablets to watches, televisions and cars. Google also shared stats that Android has grown to one billion active users, that any developer will be able to integrate their apps into mobile search results and gave an update on Chromebook, including that Chromebook will soon be able to run some Android apps. Our live blog coverage of the event -- which was interrupted twice briefly by protesters -- is below. But first, here are ou [...]

VIDEO + SLIDESHOW: The Coming Paradigm Shift In Mobile Marketing

mobile-devices-featured Thanks to the proliferation of mobile devices, the necessary ingredients for a complete paradigm shift are in place: decreasing cost of wireless communication and wireless sensors, combined with the increased ease of access to cheap data storage and data processing means major changes in both online and offline marketing. Smart companies are planning for the future by thinking about cross-device compatibility, but also thinking about big data, and how it will change the way we think about marketing. From the Marketing Land Digital Marketing Summit at SMX West 2014. The Coming Paradigm S [...]

Facebook’s AppLinks Hit More Than 1 Billion Deep Links & Adds Back Button For Previous App

App-Links This year at f8, Facebook announced AppLinks, a solution to link from app-to-app easily. This essentially gave marketers and developers a way around the browser, instead going straight from one app to another. Today, Facebook has announced that developers have enabled more than one billion unique deep links with App Links. This means that users can now deep link to more than one billion locations from their apps, a feature that many prominent apps have taken advantage of. Now, partners like Live Nation, Vimeo, Spotify, Mailbox, Quip, Redfin and Goodreads have taken advantage of this lin [...]

Chipotle Customers Are Smarter Than McDonald’s And Other Insights From Smartphone Data

PlaceIQ QSR Where do the smartest QSR customers eat? Where do the wealthiest go? What about the youngest? These questions could previously be answered (sort of) by surveys and other expensive market research. Now, smartphones and real-world behavior provide the answers. Using a variety of information sources, including anonymous aggregated smartphone and Census data, location intelligence provider PlaceIQ profiled fast-food customers at several competing restaurant chains: Chipotle, McDonalds, KFC, Five Guys, Chick-fil-A, Subway, Panera and Taco Bell. According to the data, McDonald's customers [...]

Nearly 90 Percent Of Google Apps Revenue Coming From “Freemium” Games

Google Play Logo black Mobile developers have long complained that Google Play doesn't generate as much revenue for them as the iOS app store. However, a new report from App Annie argues that revenue growth is increasing rapidly. The firm said that Google Play "quarterly app revenue more than doubled from Q1 2013 to Q1 2014." The top market for Google Play revenue is Japan, followed by the US, South Korea, Germany and the UK. By comparison the top markets for download volume are the US, Brazil, Russia, South Korea and India. There are now roughly 1.5 million apps on Google Play according to t [...]

Google Glass Heads Overseas As Explorer Program Launches In The UK

glass-uk-flag-600 On the eve of its Google I/O conference, Google has announced that its Glass Explorer program is expanding to the United Kingdom. The Explorer Program is Google's current beta testing system where interested parties that purchase Glass are given direct support from Google and asked to provide feedback as the device develops. Although the program is wide open in the US to anyone that wants to join, the device still hasn't officially launched to consumers. That may happen later this year, though Sergey Brin recently expressed uncertainty on that timing. Joining the Explorer Program com [...]

What To Expect This Week At Google I/O

Google I/O Google is "gearing up" for its annual developer conference this week, Google I/O. On Wednesday, there will be a two-hour keynote to be delivered or emceed by Android and Chrome SVP Sundar Pichai. We'll be there. Based on an array of rumors, we expect to see and hear a number of hardware and software announcements. Here's a non-exhaustive roundup of what some of those might include. Android Wear Smartwatches Android Wear was previously announced, but we expect to see a number of watches finally on display. Devices from Motorola and LG should be among those being shown off at the event, [...]

oPhone DUO May Increase Online Sales With The Power Of Smell

Imagine the aromas! Have you heard of the oPhone DUO? I’ll bet you haven’t because it's brand new! And it has very interesting implications for online marketing. The oPhone DUO is a combination of oSnap and oPhone which was unveiled at the Connected Conference in Paris this week. oSnap is an application that allows you to share smells online and oPhone is the delivery system. (No, this isn't a joke, though Google did joke about something similar on April Fool's day in 2013.) [caption id="attachment_88367" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Limited Edition oPhone[/caption] This amazing new product has so many [...]

The Flight Path: The New Cross-Device Customer Purchase Journey

shutterstock_138444350-flight-track Father's Day has just passed, and that means many consumers were scrambling last week to ensure their father's gift arrived in time for the holiday. While many may have begun their path to purchase on a desktop during work, others may have started on a mobile device during their commute home, ultimately completing their purchase journey on another device. Marketers that were aiming to target consumers during their path-to-purchase journey were most successful if they adapted their messaging to fit into any device context -- from mobile to desktop, apps to display ads. As reported in D [...]

Costly For What It Is, Amazon Phone Unlikely To Catch Fire

amazon-fire-phone-600 Much has already been said about Amazon's Fire Phone since its formal unveiling yesterday afternoon in Seattle. The biggest surprise to me was its price: $199 with a two year contact and $650 unlocked. In other words it's priced like an iPhone. The selling points of the phone have relatively little to do with the hardware, although it has what appears to be a very nice 13MP rear camera. Here is the combination of features that Amazon hopes will attract buyers: Free unlimited cloud photo storage Deep and extensive integration of the Amazon content and services ecosystem (including free [...]

Amazon Ready To Take On Samsung Android Juggernaut With New Smartphone

Chitika Android Traffic We're only a few hours away from the unveiling of the Amazon smartphone. In anticipation of that event, Chitika released data showing the distribution of Android traffic in North America, based upon "tens of millions of U.S. and Canadian smartphone- and tablet-based online ad impressions generated within the Chitika network from June 2 through June 8, 2014." According to the company's data, tablets generate 21 percent of all Android traffic in the region while smartphones drive the remaining 79 percent. Samsung is by far the dominant company, however. Amazon devices (Kindle tablets) wer [...]

Amazon Smartphone To Launch Tomorrow Through AT&T

Amazon Logo On the eve of Amazon's anticipated release of its first smartphone, the company said that apps available through its app store had "tripled" to reach 240,000. By comparison the iTunes App Store has more than a million apps and Google Play has a comparable number. While the Amazon announcement would ordinarily be "headlines" it merits attention because a perceived lack of apps would be a barrier for many to considering an Amazon smartphone (vs. other Android devices). A lack of apps has held back sales of Windows Phones until very recently. To further encourage developers to consider s [...]
