Report: Google May Be Subtracting Its Photo Service From Google+ And Offering As A Standalone Product

google-plus-logo2-1920 Cue the Google+ is dead talk. Today Bloomberg reported that the photos service that's been the biggest boon to Google+ may become independent from Google+. Google+ has the best photo functionality of any of the major social networks hands down. According to the report this move would allow for non-Google+ users to reap the rewards of the software, much like what happened with Google Hangouts. So what does this mean for Google+? Hard to say, but this could be more of a push at the Instagram/Snapchat/Vine user, than an indication that Google+ is having issues. Splitting features in [...]

Facebook has been offline for about 5 minutes at this point. I expect it to go back online any second now. The @NBA: First Pro Sports League To Promote Twitter On Official Game Ball

nba-twitter-basketball-600 It's no secret that the National Basketball Association loves Twitter, and Twitter loves the NBA. Consider the fact that, in this era where the National Football League is seen as the dominant sports league in the US, @NBA's 10.8 million Twitter followers is more than 50 percent better than the @NFL's seven million followers. It's even more than the NFL and Major League Baseball combined. The Twitter/NBA relationship took another step today when the league announced that it's adding the @NBA handle to its official game basketballs for the upcoming season. The NBA says it's the first ma [...]

How Twitter’s Non-User UX Efforts Led To An Audience Threefold That Of Active Users

twitter-bird-fade-1920 On Tuesday Twitter flat out crushed expectations during their earnings call. While the big buzz was about ad revenues jumping 129%, there was some other interesting tidbits that came out about the overall audience.   During the earnings call, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo stated that the overall number of monthly active users is 271 million, up 16 million users -- the highest number of absolute net new users in the past five quarters. This was something quite worrisome heading into the call with reports of a slowing user base. Great, right? But it got even more interesting when Mr. C [...]

Pinterest Tips Icebergs Via Acquisition, Service To Shut Down In A Month

Pinteres-Icebergs The popular "visual organization for creative minds" app, Icebergs, has been capsized by Pinterest through a recent acquisition. The popular tool featured a variety of plans from free to paid that gave different levels of storage and collections (or Icebergs) that were stored in a cloud based format. Bad news is that the Icebergs service will soon be sinking. Icebergs allowed users to save images, pages, videos, audio files, notes and more into various different "icedrops" that compiled an overall Iceberg. For all you lovers of the service, apologies -- the service will be ending as of Sept [...]

Twitter Comes Up Big: Q2 Ad Revenues Up 129 Percent

twitter-money-cash-featured After a disappointing Q1 Twitter delivered a very strong second quarter. One might even call it a home run. Certainly it surprised analysts and investors who had been more modest in their projections. Twitter's Q2 revenues were $312 million, which was substantially above financial analysts' consensus estimates. In addition, earnings beat estimates by a penny. Its user numbers also were greater than expected. Both overall and mobile users were up, 24 and 29 percent respectively. Mobile was the source of 81 percent of the company's $277 million in ad revenues (or $224 million). Here [...]

Furthermore, the mobile placements generate a 10% CTR which lead to a 61% lower CPC for News Fe [...]

Cool Janrain Tool Shows The Data You Expose When You Log In Socially

janrain-social-main We all do it, likely without much thought. We use our social media -- or other digital -- identities to log into multiple websites daily. It's quick, convenient and saves us the hassle of creating another username and password. But if you are concerned about privacy (and you should be), it's a good idea to stop every so often and dig into what data you are exposing with those social logins. Not so easy, you say? You don't want to wade through terms of service on a Friday afternoon? Fortunately, that's not necessary. Janrain, one of the leaders in the social login provider industry, has a [...]

Google+ Launches Showcase To Show Rich Media To Viewers Of Hangouts On Air

showcase-google-hoa Google+ rolled out a new interactive feature for Hangouts on Air today, giving producers the ability to show viewers links to websites, videos, merchandise and other content being discussed during live events. The Showcase app displays links with rich-media cards on the right-hand side of the Hangout's video player during the broadcast. If viewers click, the content opens in a new tab while the HOA continues playing. Here's how it looked during an HOA this week to promote Common's new album (click to view the tape of the event): The new feature should be especially useful for marketers a [...]

Facebook’s Ad Machine Keeps Rolling; Key Q2 Metrics For Marketers

facebook-target-aim-featured To no one's surprise, Facebook again crushed Wall Street expectations during its quarterly financial call yesterday, reporting revenue of $2.9 billion during the quarter the ended in June. The great majority -- 92% -- of that revenue total came from Facebook's advertising juggernaut, an increase of 67% over the same quarter in 2013. In short there are no signs of a slowdown for Facebook, which eMarketer expects to capture nearly 8% of global digital ad revenue, and more than 22% of mobile ad revenue this year. "Our team has a really strong belief in what we are building the world's f [...]

The Weird Al Yankovic Social Media Case Study

image Weird Al Owns Social Media Content creators, social media strategists and PR professionals should fall to the feet of Weird Al and lap up his creative genius. What Yankovic pulled off this past week in the world of content publishing was amazing. His 14th (yes, fourteenth!) studio album, Mandatory Fun, was released on July 15th, 2014. To promote it, Weird Al launched his #8videos8days project, releasing one music video per day for eight days straight, each on a different content partner's website. Eight. Days. Straight. Over 3700 articles were written about him last week, which gene [...]

Turtle Wax Mines Social Media Gold With #Reflectie Contest

turtle-wax There aren't many consumer products that inspire more adoration than cars. We love them, pamper them, polish them and show them off to our friends. There's a reason the 1975 lyrics by Queen's drummer Roger Taylor -- "I'm in love with my car, gotta feel for my automobile" -- tongue in cheek though they were, still ring true today. Except these days, instead of cruising Southern California's iconic Whittier Boulevard, car lovers are doing most of their parading on social media. That's one of the reasons Turtle Wax, which sells products that put a shine on America's auto fixation, has r [...]

Facebook-Home-Logo Facebook's financial winning streak continued today, as the social network reported $2.91 billion in revenues for the quarter ending in June. The revenue total was 61% higher than the second quarter of 2013. Here's the financial tale of the tape from the Facebook release: Revenue from adver [...]

Target By Operating System & Browser Type With New Facebook Advertising Behavior Types

facebook-f-logo-1920 It's pretty clear that Facebook is leading the way in digital ad targeting, and will for quite a while. While Google is struggling with mobile and socially-driven demographic/interest targeting, Facebook keeps on releasing the hits. The newest release is key for those marketers looking to promote plugins/extensions or specific programs/apps by OS. One of the new attributes added in the behaviors section is the "Internet Browser Used." Of course this is crucial for the plugin/extension field, but could lead to other opportunities based off of the sophistication of a user's browser. For examp [...]

William Shatner Boldly Goes Into Facebook Mentions App For Celebrities, Calls It “Ill Conceived”

800px-William_Shatner_02_(7559659118) Actor William Shatner is exactly the type of celebrity Facebook is catering to with the launch of the Mentions app last week. Active, engaged and social media savvy, Shatner has a Facebook Page with nearly 800,000 likes. He even seems to run the page and his other outspoken social media efforts himself, unlike many celebs who hide behind publicists. So it's fitting that Shatner took Mentions for a test drive, and posted about his experience on his Tumblr today. And his conclusion? He was underwhelmed. Like many admins of verified celebrity Facebook Pages, Shatner was prompted to d [...]
