Now That The World Cup Is Done, Twitter Tries To Interest You In Something Else

twitter-so-much-more You mean to tell us that there's a world out there beyond the World Cup? Twitter sent an email Tuesday reminding users that though the monthlong celebration of futbol is over there's plenty more to discuss -- and by the way Twitter is a great place to engage in that conversation. By all appearances, Twitter had a very successful World Cup month with 672 million tweets sent, including a record 618,725 tweets per minute at the end of Germany's 1-0 championship game victory over Argentina. But it's crucial that Twitter -- fighting to satisfy Wall Street that is has a growing base of ac [...]

Finding Tumblr’s Place In Your Social Strategy

Tumblr logo Jonathan Gillette is credited with first using the term tumbleblogs to refer to short-form or microblogs in 2005.  In the following year, a 20-year old David Karp would borrow the term to name his new microblogging platform, Tumblr. Tumblr launched in 2007 and within weeks had over 75,000 users. In 2012, Yahoo! acquired Tumblr -- and, as of the time of this writing (July 15, 2014), the site boasts 195 million blogs, 83.1 billion total posts, and 97 million daily posts. For the 13- to 25-year-old demographic, Tumblr is more popular than Facebook. It would be a mistake to think that Tumbl [...]

Google+ Drops Real Name Requirement, Apologizes For Delay

google-plus-1920 Let the Google+ pseudonym rush begin. After three-plus years of restricting users to their real names on the network, Google+ announced today that it is abandoning the policy and allowing people to use any username they choose. Google's policy was among the more contentious issues surrounding the social network and had been softened several times, including making allowances for pseudonyms and nicknames in certain occasions. Today it opened the floodgates with a Google+ post: When we launched Google+ over three years ago, we had a lot of restrictions on what name you could use on your p [...]

Survey: Best Way To Reach Millennials Is On Social Media

social-media-spying SDL a "customer experience" software and services provider has released results of  multi-country survey of roughly 1,800 millennials (18 - 36). Not unlike other surveys the picture that emerges is of a highly mobile-centric audience that is willing to engage with marketers that earn their trust but are otherwise hard to reach. Most Millennials use at least two internet devices every day. A minority use three or even four -- 37 percent in the US. The survey also found that "19 out of 20" Millennials (globally) own smartphones and check them an average of 43 times per day (in US it's 45). [...]

Twitter Pushes Advertising Support Via Mobile App Notifications

Twitter-ads-support Twitter operators are standing by -- to help you buy ads. John Doherty, online marketing manager of Zillow's Hotpads rentals site, received a notification on his Twitter mobile app today with a strong call to action: Wow. Aggressive much, Twitter? pic.twitter.com/19qarXy4Cc — John Doherty (@dohertyjf) July 15, 2014   The notification's message is similar to the one Facebook displayed for Page administrators last week promoting Facebook's "Start to Success" advertising program. Start to Success, which Inside Facebook reported today has been around for three years, offers a dedica [...]

Twitter Puts A Hit On Companies Attempting To Provide User-Base Stats

twitter-logo-600 Fact: This year Twitter stock (TWTR) took a dive from nearly $70 a share down to just over $30 a share due in part to Q1 reports that the overall monthly users were slowing. According to Business Insider, Twitter has now begun shutting off data to companies that publish their own content on the size of the overall Twitter user-base. One developer told BI that "They shut me down last Friday night after the market closed," and another, Twopcharts, has the above image boldly on their homepage. There are a few theories on why this API access is being cut down for these developers. The fi [...]

Twitter Bets Big On World Cup, Scores With Engagement Records

twitter-world-cup-final Like Germany's national soccer team, Twitter entered the 2014 World Cup with the highest of expectations. Germany, extremely talented but searching for its first major title for 18 years, passed its test in the biggest way with a 1-0 victory over Argentina in Sunday's championship match. Twitter? Not too shabby either, although the game is far from over for the social media network. Twitter put heavy emphasis on the World Cup, hoping that the world's most popular sporting event would help it attract enough active user growth to meet Wall Street expectations. It riddled the new use [...]

A new study shows that a sequential story-telling social media ad campaign can outperform a typical campaign in wh [...]

Facebook Vs. YouTube: Which Site Has More U.S. Visitors?

Compete-U-S-Monthly-Unique-Visitors-in-millions-YouTube-Facebook_chartbuilder Measuring Internet traffic is a notoriously slippery science. So when I read a headline that YouTube has passed Facebook as the largest social network in the United States, I took it with a dose of skepticism. Then I checked it out. And while time didn't permit a definitive study, I can report that the unique visitor battle between Facebook and YouTube is far from settled. Yes, they each report more than 1 billion active users globally. But who the leader is domestically depends on whose data you query. (I'll leave aside for the moment the question of whether YouTube is a true social net [...]

Digg Relaunches News.me As “Digg Deeper” To Give You Personalized News Alerts

digg-new-featured What should you read or watch today? Digg is hoping to help you answer that question with a new launch of an old service, News.me. Renamed Digg Deeper, the tool uses signals from the people you follow on social media to surface the most interesting and important news of the day. It's not a new idea. News.me was originally a Betaworks-developed iOS social news app that was scrapped in 2012 after running afoul of Twitter's API display requirements. Betaworks, which also owns Digg, kept News.me going as an email newsletter. Nuzzel and Prismatic offer similar services and even the New York T [...]

Facebook Page administrators started seeing a message on pages they manage today, promoting the offer: Clicking the link took them to a sign-up form, that included more details about the program: Start to Success is a program to help new advertisers succeed on Fa [...]

Just Like Facebook, Twitter’s New Impression Stats Suggest Few Followers See What’s Tweeted

twitter-analytics-600 Twitter has new analytics available that let anyone understand exactly how viewed their tweets are. Those stats also clear something else up. Just like Facebook, what you share on Twitter isn't seen by all your followers. Facebook has been under fire for over a year as brands have noticed that their posts have gotten less engagement than in the past. A common reaction is that Facebook's news feed shouldn't be artificially deciding what to show to a brand's followers. "Just show everything, like Twitter does it," is a general refrain. Twitter even took a shot at Facebook over this, in [...]
