Reddit’s April Foolery Wins A Slow Day For Social Media Pranking

meow It's April 1, the day when every fool thinks he (or she) is a master prankster and just about any company with an online presence can't resist joining the fun. Our colleagues at Search Engine Land are compiling definitive roundups here and here. Surprisingly (mercifully?), the major social media networks seem to be sitting the foolishness out or at least not trying very hard. Facebook posted a video of a group of friends pranking a buddy by wrapping his sports car in tin foil, using Facebook messenger to communicate before the reveal. And Twitter barely made an effort, announcing the [...]

You Can’t Own What You Don’t Pay For (In Social Media)

social-network-data-featured There's been a lot of discussion recently about ongoing changes that Facebook is making to its Newsfeed algorithms and how those tweaks impact brands. Notably, there was the release of a paper by PR agency Ogilvy discussing the notion of "Facebook Zero" and its potential implications, whilst food delivery start-up Eat24, in a more concrete and immediate move, posted a breakup note to Facebook, blaming the same changes. Whilst Eat 24's note, which ends with a threat/promise to delete its Facebook page (it should be gone by the time you read this), it's amusing in a snarky kind of way [...]

YouTube, Google+ Have An Engagement Advantage In Shareaholic Survey

shareaholic clip They may lag in total referral traffic, but YouTube and Google+ bring in a more engaged audience, according to a Shareaholic survey released Monday. The data, pulled from Shareaholic's network of 200,000 sites and 250 million unique visitors for six months ending in February, showed that users coming from YouTube and G+ easily beat Facebook and Twitter on three key metrics: average time on site, average pages viewed per visit and average bounce rate. It's important to note that we are talking about very small numbers of referrals. Shareaholic's data also show that traffic from YouTu [...]

In Response To #CancelColbert, Stephen Colbert Closes “Colbert Report” Twitter Account

It was one of the strangest things I've seen related to Twitter on TV. The host of a popular comedy show killing his show's Twitter account with the help of a Twitter founder. But that's what Stephen Colbert did with Twitter founder Biz Stone on Monday's show, and the Colbert Report's account is now gone. Perhaps it will turn out to be some strange April Fool's prank. But I don't think so. The segment happened after Colbert responded to concerns about the #CancelColbert campaign that started on Thursday, where a joke he made was tweeted out of context, offending some who felt it was offensi [...]

Now Google+ Shows You How Many Times Your Profile, Content Have Been Viewed

google-plus-featured For those of you following at home, the social media metrics scorecard has another entry. Google Plus has added the number of views you or your page have generated on the network. Here's how that looks for Sergey Brin's account: Here's Starbucks' page: Google made no splashy announcement about the change. The help page merely explains that "you now can tell how many times your content has been seen by other people, including your photos, posts, and profile page." Googler Eddie Kessler added in a G+ post that the number is a sum of views since October 2012 (Google's "social lay [...]

Eat24 Sends Facebook Funny “Break-Up” Letter Over Decline In Post Views

facebook-dislike-600 Frustrated Facebook marketers might have found their patron saint. Eat24, a take-out food delivery app, has announced that it is deleting its Facebook page with a very funny Dear John letter to the social network. Dear Facebook, Hey. It’s Eat24. Look, we need to talk. This isn’t easy to say since we’ve been together so long, but we need to break up. We’d love to say “It’s not you, it’s us” but it’s totally you. Not to be rude, but you aren’t the smart, funny social network we fell in love with several years back. You’ve changed. A lot. When we first met, you made u [...]

FTC: Brand-Incentivized Pins On Pinterest Potentially “Deceptive,” Require Disclosure

Cole Haan Eric Goldman alerted us this weekend (via Twitter) to an FTC ruling that may have a significant impact on the way that brands interact with users on Pinterest. The FTC determined (see embedded letter below) that a Cole Haan "Wandering Sole" contest that asked users to pin/re-pin images of Cole Haan products in exchange for a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree "violated Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act, 15 U.S.C. § 45." That section protects consumers against "Unfair or Deceptive Acts or Practices." It's also the section used to compel advertising or product-endorsement dis [...]

How Even Time-Challenged SMBs Can Upkeep Social Channels

shutterstock_alarmclock Many small business marketers avoid social media marketing because of the expectation that it will take too much time. However, we've seen clients benefit from as little as two hours a month on social media. Such benefits include: Facilitating communication with clients, vendors, job seekers and customers Increasing organic visibility by getting more content out on the web Helping to populate SERPs with positive listings when prospective customers research your company by name (and many do!) Building brand awareness Increasing incoming links to your site from social venue connectio [...]

When it's finished, the app will allow "a larg [...]

Foursquare Wants You To Tweet Ads To Twitter Followers

foursquare-featured According to AdWeek Foursquare is about to introduce a new ad unit/format called "Tap to Tweet." It's another flavor of "post check-in" ads that the company previously introduced. After a venue check-in, a brand or advertiser message appears asking the user to tweet to his/her followers on Twitter (see image below). Reportedly the company tested this with Mastercard during the SXSW conference several weeks ago. The minimum spend commitment is relatively steep: $100,000. Cleverly this is a way to amplify Foursquare advertisers' messages using a third party platform, which is much larg [...]

Study: 30% Of Facebook Users Are Consuming News, But It’s Mostly “Incidental” Consumption

news-headlines-featured After posting an overview yesterday of the Pew Research Center's State of News Media report, we wanted to dig a little deeper into the study's research on social media news consumption. According to the Pew report, three in ten Facebook users get news from the social media site. Even with the relatively high number of people reading news on Facebook, Pew claims Facebook news consumption is an "incidental experience." According to the report, only 22 percent of the people reading news on Facebook believe it is a useful news resource. The remaining 78 percent are on Facebook for reasons ot [...]

VIDEO: What Would Eric Stonestreet Be Like As A Social Media Strategist for Richard Sherman?

Eric Stonestreet at Adobe Summit The comedic actor and star from ABC's Modern Family, Eric Stonestreet teamed up with NFL star Richard Sherman for a creative bit which premiered at the 2014 #AdobeSummit yesterday at the end of day 'sneaks' session. Eric Stonestreet was special guest and wildly funny co-emcee as Adobe engineers made their best pitches for new possible products and services. (After last year's sneaks session, 7 out of 10 ideas pitched became actual products in the digital marketing services suite.) Watch what happens as Eric Stonestreet tries to give personal branding and social media marketing advice to th [...]

R.I.P Retweet? Twitter Experiment Features “Share” Button Instead of “Retweet”

Twitter-Large The days of Retweeting may be numbered. Twitter has been testing more mainstream verbiage by replacing "Retweet" with "Share."  Twitter has been quite active in tweaking the user interface as of late. Last week, "views" were spotted and yesterday, we saw the introduction of tagging without adding a Twitter handle in the Tweet. Eli Langer of CNBC complied a custom timeline with examples of the share button in the wild (warning - some examples may contain NFSW language): Goodbye, Retweet? // Studies have shown that many users find Twitter too difficult to understand. This test is g [...]

Twitter Adds Photo Tags That Will Notify Others (Yet Won’t Count Toward Your 140 Characters)

Phototagging-Twitter Imagine Ellen trying to tag everyone in her Oscar selfie and still having room enough to insert a joke about Bradley Cooper's arm length. It wouldn't happen. Until now, the only way to notify a user that they've been included in a photo is to make sure that their Twitter handle is included in the body of the Tweet. Until now. Twitter has announced that users will have the ability to tag up to 10 people in a photo without burning through any of the precious 140 characters. A new feature will soon be rolling out in the updated versions of the app that will allow users to see a "Who's in t [...]

Mobile First: Facebook Claims 1 Billion Active Mobile Users, 200 Million On Instagram

facebook-instagram-logos In answering questions about Facebook's $2 billion acquisition of Oculus, CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared a couple of new user stats that show the company's mobile-first strategy is paying off. Zuckerberg told analysts on a conference call yesterday that Facebook now has 1 billion active monthly mobile users. That's up from 945 million in December. Facebook's mobile users surpassed those on PCs in Q4 2012. Instagram's user base has doubled since Facebook acquired the company in April 2012, boasting more than 200 million users. Two years ago, Instagram had 100 million users. Instagram intro [...]

Instagram Surpasses 200 Million Users & 20 Billion Photos

It appears that Instagram and their hefty one billion dollar price tag was one of the most valuable Facebook acquisitions over the past two years. The photo sharing network has officially topped 200 million users who have posted 20 billion photos to date. While Facebook has taken some slack recently for their perception in the young teen market, Instagram has seen great growth in this space. More than 90% of Instagram users are under the the age of 35 and the network is rapidly growing.  Of the total 200 million users 50 million of them have joined over the past 6 months. For the of [...]

Google’s Got Glass, Facebook Has Oculus, How Might AOL and Yahoo Respond?

Yahoo viewmaster In the wake of the $2 billion Oculus acquisition announcement by Facebook people on Twitter are expressing their opinions of the deal and speculating about potential copycat acquisitions by Yahoo and AOL. Instagram Experiment Dumps Foursquare for Location Tagging & Ties In Facebook Places Instead

Facebook Large It's now been nearly two years since Facebook purchased Instagram for a mere one billion dollars. Before the initial purchase (and in today's current iteration of the app) users input their location of an Instagram photo by tagging the location from information pulled in by Foursquare. According to Fast Company, Facebook is now testing the integration of Facebook Places rather than Foursquare in a test -- with the goal of bouncing Foursquare out of the app. Facebook has been making a big push in the local space and leveraging their own property (Instagram) to push Places only makes sense. N [...]

Facebook Buys Virtual Reality “Platform Of Tomorrow” Oculus For $2 Billion In Cash And Stock

Oculus VR Facebook has just acquired "the platform of tomorrow." The company announced this afternoon that it was acquiring Oculus -- the company behind the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) gaming headset and platform -- for $2 billion in cash and stock: Facebook today announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Oculus VR, Inc., the leader in immersive virtual reality technology, for a total of approximately $2 billion. This includes $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook common stock (valued at $1.6 billion based on the average closing price of the 20 trading day [...]

Facebook Adds More Targeting Power To Lookalike Audiences

facebook-target-aim-featured Facebook announced today it is adding more targeting capabilities to lookalike audiences. Now advertisers will be able to create audiences based on the people who visited their websites, use their mobile apps or are connected to their Facebook pages. Whereas back in the olden day of last week, advertisers could only create lookalike audiences based on CRM data like email addresses, phone numbers and user IDs. The expanded targeting options will give advertisers more opportunities to scale their campaigns while still maintaining a fair amount of targeting control. Here's the rundown of [...]
