YouTube Goes Down

500_Internal_Server_Error-2 We don't know why yet, but YouTube has gone down -- the home page showing only an error page saying that "a team of highly trained monkeys" is looking at the situation. Here's what's being shown: YouTube went down around 5:30pm Eastern time. The services has been under fire recently for YouTube's shift to using Google+ to power comments. A petition against this has recently topped 100,000 signatures. Could this be some type of hacking attempt related to a protest? If so, there's no particular message being left behind about that. So for now, it seems likely there's some internal error [...]

Vine Users Can Now Edit Videos & Work On More Than One At A Time

vine-featured Brands that use Vine are sure to be happy with the two small feature updates that Vine announced today -- the ability to edit videos before they're posted and the ability to manage more than one in-progress video over time. Vine is calling the updates "Sessions" and "Time Travel." Sessions is the one that lets users save any video and return to it later. You can do this with up to 10 videos at once via a new button in the lower right corner of the app's UI. I'm thinking that feature alone should open the doors to a lot of creativity from brands and marketers. Time Travel is a bit m [...]

Here's how Facebook's Radu Margarint describes the new ads, and note the explicit mention of users clicking the ads to see the video: Potential customers will be able to click play to watch a video featuring your mobile app [...]

Doug, Ford’s Hilarious Spokespuppet, Is Missing From YouTube

dougfacebook Ford created my favorite YouTube campaign of all time. It took place in 2011 and starred an orange, irreverent puppet named Doug and his reluctant co-worker, John. The two appeared in several videos about the Ford Focus. The campaign was brilliant and had all the elements you want in a video campaign. Each video was unique, branded, provided value propositions, and made the viewer smile. Ford released a new video each week, and I was always excited to see the new adventures of Doug the spokespuppet. Before the campaign officially launched, a few random YouTube users posted videos of a pu [...]

Facebook Tests Auto-Play News Feed Videos, But Advertisers Have To Wait

facebook-video-featured Facebook says it's starting to test auto-playing videos in user News Feeds. But most brands, advertisers and marketers will have to wait for their videos to get this treatment. The test is rolling out on mobile devices over the next few weeks. Videos will auto-play as the user scrolls through the News Feed -- but they'll play silently. Clicking on the video turns the audio on and switches the video to a full-screen view. Advertisers won't have their videos included in this test, at least in the beginning. "At first, this feature will be limited to videos posted by individuals, musici [...]

Dunkin Donuts, Trident Gum Turn Vine Videos Into TV Commercials

vine-dunkin-featured Two major brands -- Dunkin Donuts and Trident Gum -- tapped Vine this week to create and air new television commercials. Dunkin Donuts ran its spot on ESPN during the network's Monday Night Football. The first Vine-based commercial, which I missed, ran for five seconds at the end of the pregame show and reportedly showed a latte flipping a coin to signify the start of a football game. It was timed to coincide with the switch from pregame show to game coverage, and Dunkin Donuts will be repeating that plan in future ESPN Monday Night Football broadcasts, too. Later, during the game itself [...]
