Deeper Dive On A Facebook Marketing Case Study

facebook-banner In last month's article about how great community management is beginning to emerge in smaller organizations, I used an example from Seagull Outfitters, courtesy of Marty Weintraub at aimClear. For this post, I went back to Weintraub for some additional information. Seagull Outfitters is a regionally dominant Minnesota Canoe Area Boundary Waters outfitter. Located at the end of the rugged Gunflint Trail, Seagull Outfitters spend their days facilitating wilderness marine excursions. Prior to the campaign that I'm going to discuss, Seagull's Facebook page was pretty typical. There [...]

According to market research firm Ipsos, 25.8 million people will play fantasy football this year. With a reach that size, it's no wonder that brand marketers continue to invest in sponsorships and media surrounding the major fantasy football platforms such as ESPN, CBS, the NFL or Yahoo. [caption id="attachment_56189" align="alignright" width="300"] Image via Shutterstock[/caption] In a recent Advertising Age article, Fantasy Football Players Are a Dream Demographic -- If You Can Get Their Attention, we learn that it's not just the reach that attracts the advertisers -- it's the attrac [...]

Facebook Now Making $0.80 Per Mobile User

facebook-mobile-pages-featured Facebook released new country-specific active user counts earlier today. It offered figures for the US and UK, saying that other countries would release them at their discretion. What these data show is that 79 percent of Facebook's daily active users are mobile in the US, with 83 percent mobile in the UK. These are the most engaged users of Facebook. The numbers reflect that already a very high proportion of the daily active user base in the US and UK is mobile -- though mobile penetration rates will still probably creep up. During the past 12 months, mobile has become a larger and [...]

Report: Facebook Preps “Addressable TV” For $2.5 Million A Day

facebook-tv-featured The broadcast and cable TV industries have long dreamed of so-called "addressable TV." That is: TV ads that can be customized or more precisely targeted on the basis of demographics or location. Not counting something like YouTube, there were and have been multiple initiatives to accomplish this over the years. None have really succeeded -- until perhaps now. The first truly scalable targeted TV ad solution, it appears, will soon be available through Facebook according to a Bloomberg Report. The article says that 15-second TV-like video ads will soon be shown on Facebook "later this yea [...]

Facebook Denies Claims Of User Dissatisfaction, Teen Disengagement

facebook-teens-youth-featured In May, the Pew Internet & American Life Project released a report asserting that while teens were on Facebook in large numbers they were losing enthusiasm. The report said that "94 percent of teen social media users say they have a Facebook profile, and 81 percent say that Facebook is the profile they use most often." However the report went on, using focus-group material, to say that many teens were burned out on the site: For Facebook in particular, while some focus group participants enjoyed using it, far more associated it with constraints through an increasing adult presence, hig [...]

Invasion Of The Community Managers

photos-with-kerry-henderson On many evenings, walking down the street in uptown Kingston, NY, you'll feel the sidewalk vibrating to the beats of music emerging from the BSP Lounge, a popular venue for independent contemporary music. If you happen to stop in on an evening when the audience turnout is thinner than hoped, you'll find BSP's marketing chief, Mike Amari, sitting at the bar with his laptop, personally giving people "love taps" on Facebook. "I like having a post that's kind of saying, 'doors are open now,'" Amari explains, "especially for people who may already be out and are scrolling through their news feed [...]

Facebook Displaying Ads That Users Have Previously Hidden

facebook Ever feel like you are seeing the same Facebook ad that you "hid" previously? Well, you aren't crazy. You did choose to hide that ad and it is still showing up. Or, at least a near copy is. Facebook is hiding ads on a URI basis. AllThingsD reported that the hide functionality on the ad targeting does not apply to the entire domain, rather the specific product/section/link.  This means that you may hide an ad from your retailer for a specific product/page, but not other products, categories and links from that domain. With items like FBX and advanced targeting, this can be very annoyin [...]

When Facebook introduced its retargeting platform, Facebook Exchange (FBX), last year it was a nearly instant success, with partners raving about performance metrics. Facebook Ads Manager Reports Update Gives Advertisers More Control

Facebook is following up on its recent efforts to streamline its ad products and revamp Page Insights with an update to Ads Manager Reports designed to make it "easier to use and more actionable." The biggest change to Ads Manager Reports is the ability to select the ad metrics you want to include in a report, rather than being tied to the specific set of Report Type templates that exist now. In the new interface, there is much more flexibility to view and break out the data how you want it--in one report.   The Cost per Action area in the Metrics menu (shown in the screensh [...]

Instagram Video: What About Vine, Monetization And Porn?

vine-instagram-200px Danny Sullivan captured the stats, the announcement and offered an initial "hands on" impression of the new video-recording feature on Instagram. My initial reaction, having just downloaded the iOS update, is that it works as advertised. It's simple, has several very nice features (image stabilization isn't yet available for Android) and will probably be quickly adopted by millions of people. One immediate question is: how will it impact Vine? Vine has seen significant adoption and is being used extensively by brands and marketers because of its Twitter connection. While Instagram video [...]
