Facebook Wants More App Developers Using Sections, Offers Best Practices & Adds New Analytics to App Insights

In an effort to get more app developers on board using sections, the Facebook Developer blog released a list of best practices for creating customized sections and added section timeline analytics to their App Insight tool. After replacing aggregations with app sections last month, Facebook has rolled-out sections to everyone, and according to the blog post, "...are seeing almost 200 million items added daily." With sections, users can rate movie, TV show and book content directly on their timeline, as well as include ratings from apps. By highlighting a number of apps already using section [...]

Rich Get Richer: Study Finds The More Content Is Liked, The More It’s Likely To Be Shared

According to an online survey conducted by SurveyMonkey, the popularity of content on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ significantly impacts the likelihood it will be read. Out of 629 participants, 374 were given a survey asking how likely they were to read an article on Facebook that already had 451 Likes. The remaining 255 respondents received a survey asking how likely they were to read an article with only 11 Likes. Survey responses demonstrated users were more likely to read an article with a higher number of Likes on Facebook. The same was true for Twitter, with respondents more likel [...]

Study: Facebook Page Reach Rises 31 Percent (& More) After Insights Bug Fix

Most Facebook Page Owners should be seeing substantial increases in the reported reach of their posts after Facebook announced and fixed a bug that affected its reach and impressions data in Page Insights. The folks at EdgeRank Checker studied about 1,000 Pages, comparing reach on posts that were published on two days: February 18th (before the bug announcement) and February 25th (after the announcement, and when Facebook told Page owners to start looking for improved data). The results are significant: the studied Pages saw a median Total Reach gain of 31 percent per fan, Organic Reach [...]

Fast-forward to 2013: web analytics data is the tip of the iceberg, “big data” is readily available, and many new tools on the market do the work of collecting data, storing it, manipulating it and reporting on it. No doubt about it, Data-Land is a much sweeter place than No-Data-Land, and as marketers, we’re lucky to have arrived here. Data provides insights that [...]

Facebook Confesses: Our Page Analytics Have Been Screwed Up, Fix In Progress

Facebook is notifying Page owners that a bug in its analytics system has affected both the reach and impressions data that's been showing in Page Insights -- and it impacts both paid and organic numbers. Logged-in Page owners should see an alert at the top of their Page the next time they visit, which points to this explanation of the problem. The company says the bug impacts data related to Paid Reach, Organic Reach, Paid Impressions and Organic Impressions - along with other data points that rely on those numbers, such as Virality and Engagement Rate. Facebook emphasizes -- particularl [...]

‘PageLever Now’ Launches Real-time Facebook Post Analytics & Management Tool

One of the toughest items that most Page admins ask is "what should I post my content?" While there have been various studies and findings, a new tool helps admins maximize post reach and visibility. PageLever has launched PageLever Now, a real-time Facebook Analytics tool. This tool gives admins a visual representation of post reach that allows users to see when a post is dwindling down so they can either pay to promote it, or release another post. This also acts as an all-in-one tool for Page Management. The rel-time view lets admins see the overall virality of their posts and most [...]

True to the mission of WolframAlpha, the new service is data-driven an ties into various knowledge domains.  Not only can you see some basics like the demographics of friends, weekly app activity, photo dates/times and geographic data, but also activity data. Facebook, CNN Partner On Election Insights

Buzz is one way that political campaigns measure their marketing success, and Facebook has teamed up with CNN to reveal how much buzz the two major parties are getting as the U.S. presidential race heats up. This morning they've launched a site called Facebook & CNN Election Insights. It offers a snapshot of how much discussion is happening on Facebook about the Obama and Romney campaigns -- and, more specifically, about each of the four presidential and vice-presidential candidates. As of this morning, Facebook discussion of Republican Mitt Romney was up 14 percent over the past thr [...]

Is it Possible To Overdo Your Company’s Social Media Presence?

Yes, it is possible to have too much of a presence on social media. Just like with anything else, customers can feel inundated and overwhelmed by company tweets and status updates. According to a survey published in September 2011, 36% of all unlikes on Facebook are because a company was posting too much. This means that a user is irritated enough to go over to settings on the actual Facebook page and complete the actions to unlike the page. Likewise, on Twitter, users may unfollow others for tweeting too much (thus clogging up their newsfeed) or making their tweets (and, likewise, Faceb [...]

Photos Increase Facebook Reach, But Does It Drive Traffic?

Photos are said to improve engagement on Facebook, but does that engagement in turn boost traffic or fans? No, our testing found — but there still might be value in using them. Ever since Facebook started displaying Reach data directly on Facebook fan pages, here at Marketing Land and Search Engine Land we have been diligently watching the fluctuations happen day-to-day.  Knowing that using photos is a sure way to attract a more engaged audience, we started to deliberately manually post more photos on Facebook, and not via our third-party tool. We spent about a week posting photos with l [...]

More Facebook Insights: How To Calculate 30 Day Metrics

Facebook provides a wealth of data that can be used to calculate many useful metrics not readily available in the standard Insights report (see last month's column for three examples).  Unfortunately, Facebook does not segment data on a monthly basis.  All Facebook data is segmented into daily, 7-day, or 28-day time periods. This means that Facebook metrics can’t be easily incorporated into monthly reports.  This is a problem not only for custom metrics that can be calculated using Facebook data, but also for the standard metrics displayed in the Insights interface.  For example, the [...]

Facebook Analytics: 3 Killer Metrics To Calculate Using Data From Facebook Insights

As more and more marketing takes place on Facebook, it's important to master measuring results on the platform, and one of the most important tools for doing so is on the site itself and available for export -- Facebook Insights. Facebook Insights is a useful analytics tool that can help social media marketers create better experiences on brand pages and improve business results.  Many of the metrics provided by Insights are readily available right on your Facebook page (simply click on the “See All” Insights link featured prominently on the Admin panel of the brand timeline page).  F [...]

Mobile Referrals & Demographic Data Now Available On Facebook Insights

Facebook continues to beef up page analytics (or Facebook Insights) with the addition of mobile reporting for apps.  Earlier this month, Facebook upped Insights reporting to occur in real-time and new in-depth mobile reporting will continue to grow the service.  For full mobile data click on the "Mobile" link under the Traffic tab: Not only can mobile now be tracked, but it can be tracked in-depth.  Many different elements of mobile referrals are tracked including demographics, source types and device types.  The mobile source reporting includes the following data points: Feed refer [...]

Facebook’s Realtime Insights To Arrive In A Matter Of Weeks

Moments ago at its fMC marketing event, Facebook confirmed plans to add realtime data to Facebook Insights. During one of the breakout sessions, Facebook staff said, "in the coming weeks, Realtime Insights will be available to all users." The comments were made in conjunction with a presentation slide discussing the benefits of brands being able to see and respond to Facebook activity as it happens. Right now, Facebook Insights -- its version of analytics for Facebook Page owners -- operates with a 48-hour reporting delay, which is pretty much unacceptable to any business that's ser [...]

What Facebook Might Announce At fMC Tomorrow

Facebook and some of its biggest advertisers will gather tomorrow in New York City for the first fMC -- Facebook's conference for marketers. COO Sheryl Sandberg is one of several heavy-hitters from inside the company that will be speaking, and other guests from outside Facebook should be involved, as well. The event will include a keynote presentation and breakout sessions, and Facebook is expected to make several ad- and marketing-related announcements. Here's a look at what Facebook might reveal at fMC. Timeline For Brands Facebook first announced Timeline last September at its F8 c [...]

Report: Real Time Insights Coming To A Facebook Page Near You

Facebook's Insights tool is reportedly about to become much faster with the addition of real-time stats.  Techcrunch broke the news that the official Facebook analytics program will move towards live (or near real-time) statistics instead of the current 48 hour reporting delay. Insights has been rather spotty as of late, with many pages reporting a 3 to 4 day lag on information.  Real-time data is available for Analytics for Websites and allows users to see how Facebook widgets/buttons/refferals are performing. With the addition of more current metrics like the "People Talking Abou [...]
