piperjaffray As we close in on the end of the year, it is helpful for us marketers to think ahead to what the coming year will offer. While I plan to do another "trends" post in early January (see what I had to say for 2013), in this post, I've asked several of my mobile-savvy colleagues to weigh in on what 2014 has in store when it comes to mobile and location-based marketing. What's interesting is that a few key themes started to emerge, including context, wearables and location moving away from being a platform and becoming a data play. Given the fact that there are five book authors (five inc [...]

Is An Instagram Messaging Service With @instagram Email On Horizon?

instagram-logo-200px Early last week rumors cropped up about a new private messaging feature that Instagram was working on. Heading into the weekend Techcrunch uncovered a list of instagram.com email addresses that were delivered to an unnamed e-commerce company that purchased an aggregated list. As you may remember, in 2010 when Facebook relaunched their message system, it included the ability to use a facebook.com email address to respond directly to messages. So what does a hypothetical messaging system mean for the network? It's hard to say without details, but it addresses a fundamental flaw that currently [...]

Report: Key Takeaways From The First Ever Instagram Ad

MK-Instagram-Ad Last week, to the chagrin of many users, the first Instagram ad began appearing in the feed. This flagship Michael Kors ad was analyzed in-depth by nitrogr.am which uncovered the following findings. It should first be noted that the graphic of overall Likes looks identical to other social ads. Instagram Teases Its Ad Strategy: Photos, Videos In User Feed

instagram-logo-200px Today the Instagram blog posted what might be described as a philosophical statement about advertising. For many months the Facebook unit has been considering how to turn itself into a "sustainable business." Ads will roll out in the relatively near future on a limited test basis. Instagram is also mindful of the potential adverse impact of ads on the user experience. We'll have to wait and see what the ad units look like and where they appear. But Instagram said it will be careful to enhance the experience with ads. Instagram explains in its blog post today: In the next couple month [...]

The piece conveys that she's functioning as the Sheryl Sandberg of Instagram, the effective COO. There are scores of companies and brands already using the site as a promotional tool now. The question for [...]

Instagram Deterring App Developers From Using “Insta” Or “Gram” In Brand Names

Luxogram If you are an Instagram app or product developer we sincerely hope your brand name doesn't closely mimic the Instagram name. Recent updates to the Instagram Brand Guidelines include: Use “Instagram,” “IG”, “Insta” or “Gram” in your app name Use the Camera Logos, or the Instagram name or logo, in your app icon Use the Instagram stylized font in your product or marketing materials An email to the Luxogram team (from Instagram) was [...]

Instagram 4.1 Allows Video Uploads From Library

instagram-featured Instagram 4.1 is now available with a couple new features -- one of which should be very welcome for brands and marketers. The new app allows users to upload pre-made videos from your mobile device's video library and share them on Instagram no matter how or when they were made. One immediate thought comes to mind: Think of all the brands that have 15-second commercials they might want to share simultaneously on Instagram and television. (As an aside, it seems to me that some brands/users have already been doing this. I don't know if they had special access to this feature, or if they fi [...]

Nissan Brand Logo Never mind the Instagram vs. Vine debate. For Nissan, it's Instagram AND Vine. The automaker has announced the "Your Door to More" contest, which gives Nissan fans a chance to help the company promote the 2014 Nissan Versa Note automobile. They'll do that by visiting YourDoorToMore.com and downloading a cut-out "kit," then using either one of the 2D photos or the small cardboard 3D version of the car to make Instagram or Vine videos. Here's one of the earliest entries we've seen on Vine: Three Grand Prize winners may have their videos featured in a Nissan TV commercial later this [...]
