More Than Just Mobile: Instagram Launches New Web Profiles

Over the past year Instagram has been slowly been transforming into more than just an app with the addition of web images and mobile photo pages. Today the most notable change has been announced, profile pages for web-based users. Instagramers will now be able to replicate the mobile viewing experience (view photos, like & comment on photos, explore other pictures) on the web. Not surprisingly the web version of the popular social site features a bold, image-heavy design. A header image that resembles Facebook timeline sits atop the user profile and pulls in various Instagram ph [...]

More Than Half Of Top Brands Are Now On Instagram

We know that Instagram is one of the most popular social destinations for users, but brands are following suit. Back in August, Simply Measured, a social analytics  firm, discovered that 40% of brands had adopted Instagram for marketing. Since then, brand adoption has jumped a whopping 35% quarter-vs-quarter increase -- up to 54% adoption rate as of November 1st. Instagram crushed all competitors in quarterly growth, thanks in part to the near 100% adoption of Facebook and Twitter. Surprisingly Google+ saw only 5% growth while Pinterest jumped 24% to a 63% adoption rate, just [...]

Instagram Translates Usernames For Twitter To Create More Accurate Tweets

Many non-Apple smartphone users where delighted when Instagram was unleashed for Android earlier this year. Once they had finished installing the app, many users (like myself) were dismayed to find that their usual handle was already taken. This means that tagging me on Instagram would require @greg_finn while it would be my usual @gregfinn for networks like Twitter. When I Tweet would be sent from Instagram, the relevancy would be lost. Not anymore. This weekend Instagram began translating an Instagram Username into a Twitter username when a Tweet was sent.  The only trick is that use [...]

Chart: Instagram’s Dramatic, 6-Month Rise To Having More Daily Mobile Traffic Than Twitter

You may have seen the headlines this week: For the first time, Instagram surpassed Twitter in average daily mobile visitors last month. It's an important milestone in Instagram's growth, but the August numbers don't fully reflect the dramatic gains that Instagram has made over the past six months. ComScore, the source of this week's statistics via its new Mobile Metrix service, dug back and shared comparison mobile data for the two services covering March through August 2012. In that six-month span, Instagram's average daily mobile visitors jumped from 886,000 to 7.3 million -- that's a [...]

New Mobile Pages Substantiate That Instagram Isn’t Just An App

When Istagram launched, users had to be iPhone toting users who downloaded the app. Since then, an Android app has launched, and a web presence has been created -- making the service much more than just an app. Today, Instagram announced new mobile photo pages, even furthering their stake as a full well-rounded social network. Logged in friends who click on an Instagram link will now be able to like and comment on photos, directly from the browser. Users will also be able to jump right into the Instagram app for a native experience by clicking on the "Open In App" button in the upper ri [...]

Instagram Traffic Up 38 Percent In July, Tumblr Surpasses MySpace [ComScore]

Interest in Instagram rose significantly in July, enough to make it the top gaining web property in comScore's monthly tracking of traffic to U.S. websites. ComScore's July 2012 Top 50 shows a 38 percent traffic gain for Instagram between June and July, with unique visitors rising from 16.5 million to 22.7 million. Overall, that puts Instagram just outside the Top 50 at No. 56. The numbers appear to coincide with Instagram's self-reported growth. In late July, Instagram announced that its community had surpassed 80 million users and nearly four billion photos shared. Meanwhile, in ano [...]

FTC Okays Facebook’s Instagram Purchase; What’s Next?

Facebook officially owns Instagram. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voted unanimously to approve the deal after reviewing potential antitrust issues. From the organization's news release: The Federal Trade Commission has closed its nonpublic investigation of Facebook's proposed acquisition of Instagram, Inc., without taking any action. Accordingly, the deal may now proceed as proposed. The two companies announced the deal in early April and reports pegged the value at $1 billion in cash and stock. Facebook has since gone public, its stock price is about half of what it was on open [...]

Report: 40% Of Top Brands Have Adopted Instagram

Thanks to Instagram's rapid growth to over 80 million users, marketers are finally getting on board the social app. A recent study by social data & reporting company SimplyMeasured, shows that Instagram adoption is a growing trend. Of the top 100 brands, 40% are now on Instagram. The largest social sites that brands adopt are Facebeook & Twitter with 98% and 94% adoption respectively. Google+ is third, with 64% of brands participating: Of the top 100 brands 26% post 1 or more photos on Instagram a week, 17% have over 10,000 followers, 14% have 20,000 followers and 8% have over 100 [...]

Instagram Hits 80 Million Users, Loses Access To Part Of Twitter API

Instagram, the social photo-sharing site that Facebook bought earlier this year for about $1 billion, says that it's now crossed the 80-million-user level. That user base has also shared nearly four billion photos, the company says. But those users will find a slightly less functional mobile app when they upgrade to the latest version. As TechCrunch is reporting, the "Find Friends" tool no longer supports Twitter. A user clicking the button to find friends via Twitter gets a pop-up message that, according to TechCrunch's screenshot, says: Unable to Find Friends Twitter no longer al [...]

How To Get Serious About Your Facebook Reach

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? That’s the question a lot of marketers are asking themselves since Facebook began providing reach data directly on Timeline posts. Now “no one” may be a bit extreme, but if only 3% to 6% of your posts are reaching your Facebook community, that sound is just not loud enough. It’s been suggested that the recent addition of this data is meant to illustrate how many people brands are not reaching, thus prompting marketers to consider Facebook’s Reach Generator. The Reach Generator, which sounds [...]

Most Mobile Time Spent In Apps: Google Has Top Reach, Facebook Has Highest Engagement

Mobile analytics provider Flurry reported previously that people are spending huge amounts of time with mobile apps, more time than with the mobile browser and more time than on the PC. This may seem to some implausible, but comScore adds further credibility to the findings with its first "Mobile Metrix 2.0" report. The data show that "4 in every 5 mobile media minutes" is spent with apps (vs. the mobile browser). Previously comScore had been reporting that apps and the mobile browser have roughly equal audiences. That's still true but the company now confirms that people spend far more tim [...]

The Tech Investment Metric System — A New Type Of “Gram”

Instagram sold for $1 billion! Slideshare is being purchased for $118 million! Facebook about to go public for $100 billion! Apple's on its way to being worth $1 trillion dollars! A tech bubble? Who cares. With valuations like these, we need a new way of measure the worth of a company. Allow me to introduce a new type of "gram," one used to value companies. I can't claim the credit here. Last week, I was talking with Google distinguished engineer Matt Cutts. Most known for his role as head of Google's web spam team, Cutts is also an investor himself, as well as a pretty witty observer of al [...]

Mark Zuckerberg Bypassed Facebook Board, Bankers & Lawyers During Instagram Deal

While Mark Zuckerberg only owns 28% of Facebook, he still maintains 57% of voting rights.  Zuckerberg flexed this power freely during the Facebook-Instagram deal, reaching a deal in just 3 days without consulting outside sources.  The Wall Street Journal reports that Zuckerberg and Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram, worked out the deal over three days of negotiating in Zuck's 7 million dollar home in Palo Alto.  Absent from the deal were lawyers, bankers, and the Facebook board. [caption id="attachment_10194" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO - Photo C [...]

Jon Stewart Takes On Google Glasses & Facebook Buying Instagram

Glasses from Google that let you interact with the world? Facebook paying a billion dollars for Instagram? It's all left Jon Stewart of The Daily Show perplexed, confused and with plenty of fodder for poking fun. In last night's episode, the comedian took shots at both developments. Of the Google augmented reality glasses, he led in with: It's like a nose-mounted version of the Google we love ... the world's largest database of people wizzing in public. But now, it will be like they're peeing right in your eye. He then played the official Google "concept video" of the glasses, remarki [...]

Facebook Acquires Instagram For A Reported One Billion Dollars

In a public wall post, Mark Zuckerburg announced that Facebook has purchased Instagram and that the Instagram team will be joining Facebook.  This is a unique acquisition for Facebook, as they are not only purchasing a leading application, but the entire user base as well.  TechCrunch reports that the Instagram price tag wasn't cheap either, coming in at "approximately $1 billion in cash and stock." We're excited to announce something very big: Instagram + Facebook bit.ly/Hslpv2 — Instagram (@instagram) April 9, 2012   The big question however is: Will Instagram merge into s [...]
