Facebook Advertising Decoded

Traditional advertisers often find Facebook daunting. Social media marketing is the future, that is certain, but transitioning established advertising strategy to new media can be a challenge. It’s worth it: with over 900 million people at your disposal, the possibilities are nearly limitless. The breadth of data available through Facebook and the versatility of its ad units allow marketers to customize solutions for any type of client, whether a Fortune 100 brand or a local mom and pop hardware store. At the same time, it can be a bit overwhelming. Facebook isn't like other type [...]

Today, with the collaboration of Facebook, comScore unleashed a research report that examined the affect paid and earned Facebook media had on both in-store and online sales.  The data uncovered conflicts wholeheartedly with the recent statements made  by GM, that Facebook Ads don't work. For the findings, two comScore products were used to drive media exposure; Social Essentials for earned media and AdEffx for paid media.  Some of the main metrics utilized in the report were Fan Reach, Engagement, Amplification and sales.  The report tested programming targeted to Friends and Friends [...]

Facebook May Consider Letting Children Under 13 Create Accounts

facebook-kids-children-featured This morning the Wall Street Journal reported that Facebook is considering letting those under the age of 13 on the site.  Since day one, Facebook has always been accessible for teenagers or adults.  one of the biggest issues with those under the age of 13 who are using Facebook by using false information is that they do put themselves at risk due to their permission levels.  Giving children significantly reduced permission levels and monitoring could help circumvent issues of  forged accounts. CBS news also reports: The company is testing a way to connect kids' accounts with thei [...]

The “Paid Organification” Of Facebook: Why Facebook’s Plan Isn’t About Display Ads

facebook-logo-square The future of Facebook marketing isn’t about display ads. It’s about visibility and reach. There has been so much pre/post IPO chatter about the flawed Facebook display advertising model. It's been mentioned that nobody clicks on ads and that ads have been ineffective.  Frankly, these folks have it wrong. Facebook is undergoing an organification movement that fellow marketer Marty Weitraub has been preaching for years now. Facebook ad units that everyone screams and yells about are fading away; paid interactions, increased reach and word of mouth advertising are coming to the forefront [...]

Facebook Tests A Sleeker Timeline Layout For Profiles

Facebook, notorious for tweaking and testing its layout, is at it again post-IPO. Talking Points Memo spotted a streamlined version of timeline that allocates less real-estate for friends, photos, and likes. Instead of pulling in profile/page information under the cover photo, simple icons exist: Here is a look at the current (non-test) version of Timeline: One of the additions that the layout brings is "summary" which highlights life events. Another interesting difference is that instead of "likes" the icon now reads "favorites." Facebook did not comment on the new-look timeline but [...]

Facebook IPO Fails To Deliver Anticipated “Pop”

Screen shot 2012-05-18 at 1.52.28 PM I had assumed, as did many others, that Facebook shares would open at $38 and head north from there. In fact I thought demand would be so brisk that the shares might hit $100. Was I wrong. I believed there was considerable pent-up demand for what was the biggest tech IPO ever. But that demand never fully materialized. Everyone that wanted to buy Facebook got a chance. Still, at the close today Facebook was worth roughly $105 billion. And CEO Mark Zuckerberg is worth more than Google's co-founders individually. In the final run up to the IPO, Facebook floated more shares than it had or [...]

Trending Articles Now Showing In Facebook’s News Feed

facebook-logo-square In a new change today, "Trending Articles" have been appearing in Facebook users' news feeds.  The new feature scrolls through 5 articles that appear to be hot across all of Facebook.  This feature very much resembles Google's  the "Hot On Google+" functionality but adds in the name of a friend who has recently read the article: The articles that we spotted did escort users off of Facebook to an external story.  Each article can be hidden and all articles from a given source can be hidden: All sources that we have seen have been tied to the social reader app.  For more info [...]

Facebook Study: Building Brands With Social Media & Organizing Teams For Social Success

Back at fMC in late February, Facebook announced that "Social Media Blueprints"(whitepapers) were being created in conjunction with Forrester Consulting.  They can now be found on the official Blueprints page.  While the information contained in these reports is helpful, it wouldn't be considered groundbreaking.  In all likelihood, these Blueprints were released to support the upcoming Facebook IPO by providing detailed information and strategies for the largest of companies. Currently two blueprints exist: Building Brands For The Connected World The first Blueprint "Building Brands [...]

How To Integrate The Latest Platform (e.g. Pinterest) Into Your Facebook Presence

You need to be where your consumers, fans and prospects are, but, with so many social platforms, it can be difficult to keep up and make sure everything works together. Ensuring the marketing, strategy, and consumer journey is consistent, fits together, and tells a story that ladders up to your objectives and goals is easier said than done. It’s safe to bet that Facebook has evolved into the hub of your social media marketing, and the announcement of Timeline for Pages may make it even more central. It is the place where your content, stories, and communication live as well as thrive. B [...]

Bing & Facebook See Deeper Search Integration With “Linked Pages”

Yesterday a new feature was announced by Microsoft that allows logged-in Facebook users to link related pages to themselves.  The new product, 'linked pages,' not only allows users to link pages to themselves, but also to friends. To see all linked pages simply click on the tab underneath the search box.  Those Facebook friends with a linked page will show up in the left column.  When pages are linked to a profile, the Facebook result displays first with all other linked pages below: One missing option that may anger users is that users cannot move other pages above the Facebook [...]

Budgeting For “Free” Social Media And The Need To Rebalance

Fire your marketing department! Social media is free! Have you heard the news? It’s been trumpeted recently in no end of misleading, link-baity headlines such as these: P&G To Lay Off 1,600 After Discovering It's Free To Advertise On Facebook P&G slashes marketers in lieu of free social media P&G CEO Discovers Social Media Marketing Is Free! P&G to cut 1600 staff after CEO discovers digital media is free‎ In Internet marketing, "free" is a dirty enough word to be a serious deterrent to email delivery when used in a subject line. Apparently, this doesn't hold [...]

Facebook To Offer Verified Accounts & Higher Visibility To Top Users

facebook-verified-featured From the beginning, Facebook has been about a community of real people and has used everything from .edu email addresses to mobile verification for support.  Now Facebook is helping top users (those with the most subscribers) gain more prominence by verifying their account with physical IDs.  TechCrunch announced that Facebook is inviting "prominent public figures" to verify their accounts and display a preferred nickname. This verification process will help users be found easier as well.  While no verification badge will be shown, verified users will appear in the Facebook Subscribe [...]

The #Hashtag Bowl, Final Score: Twitter & Facebook 8 Super Bowl Mentions Each, Google+ Gets Zero

facebook-twitter-google-plus-featured While most Super Bowl viewers were concentrating on the Giants-Patriots final score, we were tallying up a different score -- call it the #Hasthtag Bowl, if you want -- and the final score was just as close as in the real game. Based on my informal tracking, Twitter and Facebook shared equal visibility during the Super Bowl, being mentioned in eight commercials each. And both of them skunked Google+, which wasn't mentioned at all during any Super Bowl ads. Out of 59 total commercials -- that's my unofficial count beginning with kickoff and ending when time ran out in the fourth quart [...]

Will “Apps For Timeline” Make Facebook The Next Major Apps Ecosystem?

facebook-apps-featured Last night Facebook formally launched the previously announced "Apps for Timeline." If you're Zynga CEO Mark Pincus (or one of a handful of other high profile publishers) then you'd probably argue that apps on Facebook have been wildly successful.  But for most publishers and developers apps have not done quite as well. However this new "distribution mechanism" -- the embedding of apps in Facebook Timeline -- is almost certain to be much more effective. A new "app store" to rival Apple, Google? In fact Facebook could ultimately become another “app store” to rival the major mobile app ma [...]
