After The IPO: Facebook Survives Its “Year Of Living Dangerously”

Yesterday was the one-year anniversary of Facebook's public offering. It has arguably been the most volatile and momentous period in the company's roughly eight-and-a-half year history. Facebook went public in May of last year at $38 and closed Friday at just over $26. The low, last September, was $17.55. The volatility of the stock and the fact that it hasn't fully returned to its offering price may give many institutional investors reason to complain; but, most other statistics and metrics are up from a year ago. For example, Facebook has impressively been able to grow its mobile reven [...]

Facebook Home Crosses 1M Downloads Threshold In One Month

It may not sound like much for a site with more than a billion users and 751 million mobile active users, but a million downloads of Facebook Home is significant. Facebook revealed the figure at a "whiteboard session" held yesterday at the company's Menlo Park, California headquarters. Home had 500,000 downloads as of April 21. So the number has doubled in a few weeks. Facebook also said the profile of users adopting Home was becoming "more normal" with each passing week. (It's not clear what "less normal" would mean in this context.) The Facebook Home app/launcher has been heavily malig [...]

Facebook Likely In Talks To Buy Social Navigation App Waze

Will Facebook acquire social traffic and navigation app Waze? TechCrunch ran an article today claiming that three Israeli papers, Calcalist, Ynet and The Marker, have reported that Facebook is in talks to acquire the company in a billion-dollar deal that would help further grow Facebook's mobile efforts. According to the article, a private source confirmed the deal along with a price range of $800 million to $1 billion, although a spokesperson from Facebook and from Waze both said they will not comment on rumors or speculation about the business. Waze uses crowdsourcing technology to let [...]

Google, Facebook Have 7 Of Apple’s Top 25 All-Time iPhone Apps

Google and Facebook combine to take up seven spots on Apple's newly-released list of the Top 25 all-time free iPhone apps. Apple published that list -- and three others -- as part of its countdown to 50 billion App Store downloads, which the company expects to happen soon. (Apple is giving away a $10,000 App Store credit to whomever completes the 50 billionth download and $500 credits to 50 others.) Those lists look at the most popular iPhone apps (free and paid) and iPad apps (free and paid). On the paid side, the majority of apps on both lists are games. But, there's more variety in th [...]

Location-Based Listening & Analytics

One of the five predictions in my recent 2013 mobile predictions post was that mobile analytics and measurement would get a seat at the "adult table" this year. In particular, one of the areas in which I am seeing tremendous growth is location-based listening and analytics. As more and more companies adapt a listening strategy -- in many cases, using advanced tools like Sysomos and Radian6 (now part of Salesforce.com's MarketingCloud) -- some are starting to look at the possibilities of going deeper. During a recent interview with colleague and co-author of Digital Marketing Analytic [...]

Facebook Reports $1.46 Billion Revenues, 751 Million Mobile Active Users

Facebook just announced Q1 2013 earnings. Revenue was nearly $1.46 billion, up 38 percent year over year (YoY). That beat financial analysts' estimates. Net income was $219 million, which was below estimates. Allaying fears of a decline in usage and engagement, Facebook saw 26 percent growth in daily active users (now 665 million). Monthly active users also increased 23 percent to 1.1 billion. Mobile active users were 751 million, a significant jump compared with 680 million in Q4 2012. Ad revenues were $1.25 billion (85 percent of total revenue), which represented a 43 percent increase [...]

Facebook Home Rolling Out Internationally Today

Facebook's new Android experience, Facebook Home, is launching outside the U.S. today. That's according to Facebook's Cory Ondrejka, who made the announcement today at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference. The international rollout is of the Facebook Home app only; the phones that have it pre-installed won't be sold until later this year. Home launched less than two weeks ago in the U.S. on a limited number of Android devices. Among its features, Home essentially takes over the device's home and lock screens, pushing Facebook content to the user without him/her having to launch the Faceboo [...]

This morning, Facebook is launching what it calls "partner categories." It brings offline and third-party data from data brokers Acxiom, Datalogix and Epsilon to all categories of Facebook advertising. Facebook previously incorporated this data into its targeting capabilities under Custom Audiences. Now it's available for all Facebook Ads and to all users of the Power Editor. Starting today, partner categories will be available to advertisers in the US. The data are drawn from a vast range of sources including online behavior, offline loyalty cards and myriad other places. Partn [...]

Hands On With Facebook Home Cover Feed And Chat Heads

Earlier, we covered the launch of Facebook "Home," the company's homescreen strategy for Android devices (also see live blog). As expected, Facebook also introduced a branded phone, the HTC "First." The First is available in the US exclusively from AT&T for $99 (locked and with a contract). There are lots of interesting implications from the announcement today that we'll explore in other stories in the coming days. However, in this post, I'll go through some of the basic features of Cover Feed and Chat Heads, as well as how Home affects the general Android handset experience. What [...]

Facebook Launches ‘Home’ – A New Android Home Screen Experience

Facebook has just announced Facebook Home, a new home screen experience that it's launching first on Android devices. Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg just previewed Home at an event that we're also live blogging as it continues. Facebook Home essentially turns the Android home screen and lock screen into a Facebook content-based experience with what it calls "Cover Feed." Content loads while the phone is sleeping, Zuckerberg says, and the user can then easily flip/swipe through it when waking up the phone. Facebook Home supports notifications that pop-up on the screen and can [...]

Facebook Rebrands “Nearby” As “Local Search”

According to at least two recent surveys, Facebook -- surprisingly -- emerges as one of the primary places people look for local business information on the Internet. Last year, Facebook relaunched its mobile "Nearby" app feature. And now, the company has renamed Nearby. It's now being called "Local Search," which is more self-explanatory.  This won't necessarily increase usage overnight, but it certainly makes the content and functionality much more clear. With a little bit of promotion, the company could generate significant local search volume from the app. For more on this story, se [...]

Leak Reveals “Facebook Phone” Is More Than A Phone It’s Also Homescreen Strategy

Android Police has obtained what appears to be lots of detail about what Facebook is going to announce on Thursday. There's considerable technical information in the post. As rumored, Facebook is apparently announcing an HTC phone ("Myst"), which is being called mediocre in terms of its hardware specs. That phone offers a slightly modified version of Android and also an immersive homescreen experience called "Facebook Home." Facebook Home will also reportedly be a stand-alone app that is offered through Google Play for other handsets. It would basically make Facebook your homescreen -- a [...]

Mobile App Targeting On Facebook Gets Smarter With OS & Wi-Fi Targeting

Last year Facebook launched Mobile App Install Ads which give advertisers the ability to specifically promote application installs from those apps in the App Center. Last week two new features were released that gives advertisers the ability to target by specific OS version and also to target Wi-Fi connected devices. With these new changes, advertisers can spend smarter by displaying apps to specific operating systems (such as Android Jelly Bean 4.2, iOS 5) while avoiding platforms that don't run the application well. The Wi-Fi targeting option is a very interesting attribute as customiz [...]
