Facebook Local Page Ratings Now Come With A Numerical Display

sprinkles-review It appears that Facebook is working to re-emphasize its star-rating system for brand Pages. As reported first today by Inside Facebook, the social network is displaying numerical ratings, rather than only the star icons it previously showed. And when you hover your cursor over the ratings, a full rundown of all the establishment's ratings appears. Here's how it looks: The ratings feature appears on Pages that choose to include a physical address in their Pages settings. When Facebook rolled out the star system last November, it was seen as a possible competitor for Yelp, Foursquare a [...]

Facebook Is Testing A ‘Pages Popular In Your Area’ Feature

FB-popular-pages Facebook is testing a new suggestion module on its right sidebar: Pages Popular In Your Area. The suggestion box, first brought to our attention Friday by online media strategist Samuel Edwards of Tenthwave Digital, has been appearing intermittently today for me. Results, as you would expect from an experiment, have been spotty, with pages for Eminem and Lil Wayne -- by no means local for my Costa Mesa, California location -- mixing it up with local restaurant and cupcake providers. And clicking through to the "See All" link -- https://www.facebook.com/pages/?category=local -- takes m [...]

The Drop In Facebook Page Reach Is All About The Competition

facebook-like-600 One key reason that Facebook Pages are reaching fewer of their fans with posts: the number of Pages Liked by the average Facebook user has increased by more than 50% in the last year. That statistic, provided by Will Cathcart, Facebook's News Feed director of product management, in a recent interview with Josh Constine of TechCrunch, is a plausible explanation for the approximate 50% drop in organic Page reach per fan in the last six months, illustrated in this chart from EdgeRank Checker: Constine's detailed explanation of how Facebook determines what to show in users' News Feeds is exc [...]

Questions About The New Facebook Pages Layout? Facebook’s Got Answers.

Facebook-Page-Apps Two weeks ago, Facebook announced a significant update to the Pages layout that turned the presence of Page more personal. The crux of the redesign was that the two column business pages were soon turning to a one column format. This initial image was quite bare and failed to show where Apps and custom tabs were to be located (if at all.) Seeing that the initial release spawned so many questions, Facebook has released their own Q & A on the topic. The answers should help calm the fears of marketers, and here are the Reader's Digest version of their answers: What's on the Left-side [...]

Facebook Testing Business Manager, A Powerful Tool For Agencies And Large Businesses

Business Manager Managers of Facebook pages for agencies and large business take heart. Facebook is testing a new dashboard that seems to solve many issues that have for years frustrated those managing large stables of pages. As reported today in TechCrunch, Facebook is testing a Business Manager dashboard that gives administrators the ability to control pages and ad accounts from one place. No longer will it be necessary for teams to create fake Facebook profiles to manage a business' presence on the social network. No longer will you have to friend someone -- or know the email address tied to their [...]

Welcome Change? Facebook’s New Brand Page Design Mimics Personal News Feeds

facebook-pages-featured Facebook is simplifying the layout of its brand pages, announcing today that it will display page posts in a single column rather than the current dual display. Facebook said it will start rolling out the changes this week. The change will mean that a page's posts will appear in the main well of content on the right-hand side of the page, exactly as they appear on Facebook users' News Feeds. The left column will display information about the brand such as hours of business, contact information and URLs, as well as photo and video galleries. The change appears to be the final pullback [...]

Report Says Facebook’s Organic Reach Will Hit Zero. Our Response? Of Course It Won’t.

facebook-insights-featured A recent report from social@Ogilvy warns of a world with no organic reach for any brand pages where all brands have to pay to play. Dubbed "Facebook Zero: Considering Life After the Demise of Organic Reach" the study paints a grim picture for the free marketing that brands can harness on Facebook. While the statement may instill fear and doubt into the minds of marketers, the survey instills more questions than answers in our minds. It's quite certainly true that the overall reach of Facebook Page posts has dropped. However, a drop does not equate to a statistically relevant deduction t [...]

How Facebook’s News Feed Now Lets Brands Ride The Coattails Of Other Brands

facebook-tagged-featured Facebook has announced a change today that means users will begin seeing posts about Facebook pages they follow, even if those posts are made by pages they do not follow. It all comes down to Facebook tagging, and it's a way that one brand can extend its audience with a tagged shoutout to another brand. Consider this example that Facebook has shared, of how the new system works: In this example, the Facebook user follows Houston Rockets basketball player Dwight Howard's Facebook page. That means they see some of the updates from Howard's page, ones that Facebook's news feed algorithm dec [...]

The Slipperiest Search Campaign Ever

ky date night ad There are a lot slick opportunities out there in search marketing. The wheels of progress have never been greasier. Yep, since people first started paying to be included in search results, a lot of smooth transactions have taken place. Yet, for a whole lot of good reasons, search lacks certain criteria for brand building. Over the years, more than a few studies have measured engagement, and many brands have attempted to overcome the very simple transactional relationship search advertising has with its pay-for-clickers. Paid search does not exist in a creative void. The process of entici [...]

Facebook Tweaks News Feed: Text Updates Aren’t Working, Won’t Be Shown As Much

facebook-newsfeed-featured Facebook wants Page Owners to stop sharing so many text-based updates and instead try other types of updates that the company says get higher engagement in the News Feed. In a blog post today, Facebook's News Feed Ranking Product Manager Chris Turitzin says the company has tweaked the News Feed algorithm to downgrade text updates from Pages because they don't perform as well as text updates from friends. ... the latest update to News Feed ranking treats text status updates from Pages as a different category to text status updates from friends. We are learning that posts from Pages behave [...]

facebook Facebook has launched a new feature that allows nonprofits to instantly collect donations directly on Facebook. Nineteen nonprofit partners will help to launch the Donate product with the full list on the official Facebook blog post.   The functionality will show a "Donate Now" button on the top of Facebook Pages and next to the Posts of nonprofits showing in the News Feed. Users are prompted to enter the amount of the donation and enter their payment information directly into Facebook. When donating from a specific post in the News Feed users are given the ability to share the [...]

From Facebook: Organic Page Reach Is Dwindling, Best Way To Be Seen Is To Buy Ads

facebook It's been no secret that Facebook's Organic Reach has been dwindling over the past 18 months. However, Facebook has never fully admitted this, until now. A new Facebook blog post specifically addresses the decline of organic distribution. Brands and marketers like Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, have felt the burden of the restricted messaging and threatened to leave in the past: FB is blowing it ? This is the first step.. The Mavs are considering moving to Tumblr or to new Myspace as primary site pic.twitter.com/tQDZjgDC — Mark Cuban (@mcuban) October 27, 2012 A quote [...]

Fans Or Frenemies? 3 Tips For Facebook Customer Service Crisis Management

facebook-dislike-featured No matter the budget, simply posting content on social media is not enough to make the most of your social media marketing dollar. Many marketers know repeat customers drive the most business, which may explain why seventy-six percent of local merchants today look to social media to engage existing customers (Constant Contact's Technology Pulse Q3, 2012). But what happens when you're publicly engaged by an existing customer on Facebook who doesn't have nice things to say? Just as the sun rises and sets, so will there be angry, vocal customers sharing their thoughts with the world by [...]

Facebook Upgrades Post Scheduling From 12 Steps Down To 4 & Now Shows In Activity Log

Post-Scheduling All of us marketers rejoiced when post scheduling was announced over a year and a half ago. The interface, however, was very clunky, taking 12 steps for a page to actually schedule a post. Today, Facebook has announced a more streamlined product that now only requires 4 steps (and looks a heck of a lot better.) Now users can write their update then quickly choose a date, add in a time and they're done. Another nice new feature is the ability for admins to view their upcoming scheduled posts: Lastly, Pages can now quickly drop a photo (or multiple photos) directly into their updat [...]

Thumbs Down? Facebook Testing Star Ratings For Pages

Stars-Facebook Turns out that the Facebook 'Like' that we've grown to love just might not be descriptive enough. The like is binary data that indicates whether or not a user is a fan, or not, but not much else. TechCrunch spotted the usage of star ratings (5 possible) on desktop versions for some pages. This isn't the first time Facebook has used stars as a data point. Users have been rating places with 5 stars when providing a recommendation: This implementation makes complete sense for places pages as Facebook could make a run at Yelp, Foursquare and Google+ Local in the local review market. [...]

Facebook: 20 Million Small Businesses Have Pages, Small Fraction Are Advertisers

facebook-pages-open-featured Facebook has reached another milestone: 20 million small businesses are using Facebook Pages. But only a small fraction of those are spending money on any of Facebook's ad products. That's the word from Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, who shared the data during today's Q3 earnings call. The company's report focused, as it is usually does, on mobile and user growth, but small business growth is no less important and -- from a business perspective -- perhaps more important. Sandberg also revealed that Facebook had about one million advertisers during Q3. "It's really hard to get small bus [...]

Facebook Begins Testing New “Stories To Share” Feature For Media Sites & Publishers

share-featured Facebook announced a new "Stories to Share" feature today, a tool that allows media sites to post suggested content on their Facebook page directly from the Insights Dashboard on the admin panel. According to Facebook: Stories to share makes it even easier for media sites to find the most engaging content they might want to post on Facebook. For instance, TIME can see suggestions of stories they have published to TIME.com but they have not yet shared to their Facebook fans. Facebook says the "Stories to Share" feature is being tested by media sites and publishers, and not currently availa [...]

Doug, Ford’s Hilarious Spokespuppet, Is Missing From YouTube

dougfacebook Ford created my favorite YouTube campaign of all time. It took place in 2011 and starred an orange, irreverent puppet named Doug and his reluctant co-worker, John. The two appeared in several videos about the Ford Focus. The campaign was brilliant and had all the elements you want in a video campaign. Each video was unique, branded, provided value propositions, and made the viewer smile. Ford released a new video each week, and I was always excited to see the new adventures of Doug the spokespuppet. Before the campaign officially launched, a few random YouTube users posted videos of a pu [...]

Study: Hashtags On Facebook Don’t Help To Garner More Exposure

facebook-hashtags-featured Early this summer, Facebook released hashtag support for users and brands that wanted to be "part of a larger discussion." According to Edgerank Checker, a Facebook optimization company, hashtags not only fail to be part of the larger conversation, but that they also may hinder engagement and reach, #uhoh. Over 500 pages were tracked with over 35,000 posts during this study and the results were staggering.  Overall the median viral reach and the median organic reach of posts were lower if they contained a hashtag. Viral reach dropped from 1.30% to .80% when a hashtag was present, engagemen [...]

Facebook Says Run Your Promotions From Your Page, No Contest App Required

facebook-pages-logo In an about-face, Facebook announced it is doing away with the requirement that contest and promotions be run through apps. Up to now, page administrators were required to run all promotions through an app. However, "illegal" contests run from page timelines were fairly rampant. Starting today, page administrators can opt to run a promotion from their page, from an app, or by using both. The following practices, once banned per Facebook's Page Terms, are now permitted: Collect entries by having users post on the Page or comment/like a Page post Collect entries by having users m [...]
