After The IPO: Facebook Survives Its “Year Of Living Dangerously”

Yesterday was the one-year anniversary of Facebook's public offering. It has arguably been the most volatile and momentous period in the company's roughly eight-and-a-half year history. Facebook went public in May of last year at $38 and closed Friday at just over $26. The low, last September, was $17.55. The volatility of the stock and the fact that it hasn't fully returned to its offering price may give many institutional investors reason to complain; but, most other statistics and metrics are up from a year ago. For example, Facebook has impressively been able to grow its mobile reven [...]

For the study, CitizenNet looked the two weeks of Facebook Page Insights data leading up to the premieres of 77 TV shows from both broadcast and cable networks from 2011 and 2012. Google Closing Social Login Gap With Facebook

Facebook has been the dominant source of social logins, but Google is closing the gap and now accounts for more than one-third of all social logins. That's according to the latest quarterly report from Janrain. After a couple years of consecutive gains, Facebook's share of social logins has dropped for two straight quarters now. In Q1 2013, Janrain estimates that Facebook accounted for 46 percent of social logins -- down from a high of 54 percent in Q3 last year. Google, meanwhile, has grown from 25 percent of social logins in Q3 2012, to 31 percent at the end of the year, and now up to [...]

Email Is Top Activity On Smartphones, Ahead Of Web Browsing & Facebook [Study]

Email is the most common activity that U.S. adults do on their smartphones, with Web browsing and using Facebook a close second and third, respectively. That's according to "Always Connected," a new study from IDC that was done earlier this month and includes responses from more than 7,400 iPhone and Android users between 18 and 44 years old. Facebook sponsored the study, and so much of the data surrounds how Facebook helps users connect with others via their smartphones. According to the study, 78 percent of respondents say they check email on their smartphones, compared to 73 percent w [...]

State Of The News Media: Everything In Decline But Digital

The Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism’s has served up its annual and comprehensive “State of the News Media" report. It offers a mostly pessimistic assessment of the condition and trajectory of various news media in the US today. In perhaps its most striking finding, the report shows how declining revenues leading to repeated cost-cutting have hurt readership and audience loyalty. Based on survey data, the State of the News Media argues that slipping quality and diminished coverage have alienated large numbers of people who've abandoned news publications o [...]

According to Glassdoor company review data, Mark Zuckerberg has the best employee-approval rating of any CEO in the US. Last year he wasn't among the top 25. By the same token, last year's top CEO, Apple's Tim Cook, has fallen from number 1 to number 18 on this year's survey. Glassdoor's company review surveys ask employees to "indicate whether they approve or disapprove of the way their CEO is leading the company." Glassdoor said that "rating and rank in the 50 Highest Rated CEOs list was determined using the average approval rating a CEO received between February 25, 2012 and Februar [...]

Facebook Fact Checks The New York Times Claim Of Lower Organic Engagement

Yesterday, New York Times columnist Nick Bilton made claims that Facebook was limiting organic post visibility in favor of paid posts. Today, Facebook responded with a detailed fact check on how organic visibility works. In some experiments, Bilton found that paid posts saw 1,000 more interaction when he paid to promote it, and was limited to next to no visibility without payment. He talked about the downfall of subscribers where he once garnered triple-digit engagement which is now down to single-digit post interactions. He also claimed that Facebook may be purposefully restraining  [...]

Facebook Vacation: 61 Percent Of Users Say They’ve Taken One

A new Pew survey on Facebook usage patterns leads me to want to coin a new term: "Facay" -- for "Facebook vacation." According to survey data collected in December, "61 percent of current Facebook users say that at one time or another in the past they have voluntarily taken a break from using Facebook for a period of several weeks or more." Pew says that its data, based on a survey of 1,006 US adults, "indicate there is considerable fluidity in the Facebook user population." In addition to the above finding, 20 percent of survey respondents say they no longer use Facebook, while 8 percent [...]

Facebook touted the success of its Promoted Posts product and the general success of ads in the News Feed during its earnings call today, in which it announced Q4 financial figures that beat analyst estimates. During the earnings call, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg announced that almost 500,000 Pages have tried Promoted Posts, the ad product that gives Page owners a chance to push a status update to more Facebook users. The costs depend on the amount of fans that a Page has, and can range from a few dollars to thousands of dollars. Page owners big and small have complained about the Promo [...]

Most Popular App In The US? It’s Facebook (Thanks To Apple)

Facebook can thank Apple for helping making it the top overall mobile app in the U.S. in 2012, according to new numbers out today from the comScore Mobile Metrix service. ComScore says Facebook ended the year with more than 85 million unique adult visitors -- that's on both Android and iOS. It's about 11 million more unique visitors than Google Maps. After Facebook, Google apps hold down the next five spots. Facebook and Google Maps were pretty much neck-and-neck for several months last year, but comScore says Google Maps usage saw a significant decline after Apple dumped it from iOS [...]

SocialBakers Launches Tool To Show Local Facebook Page Fan Counts

Marketers that want a better sense of where a Facebook Page is most popular can do that now via a new tool from the social analytics firm, SocialBakers. The company announced its Local Page Ranks tool today, which shows where Page fans are located geographically. This data has been available to Page owners in Facebook Insights, but only for their own Page(s). SocialBakers' Facebook Page Statistics page now has a "Country" dropdown where the local ranks of Pages that SocialBakers monitors can be accessed. The data shows, for example, that Walmart is currently the most popular Facebook p [...]

Google’s Share Of Social Logins Gaining On Facebook (But Not On Mobile)

Facebook continues to be the dominant platform for websites that offer social logins, but Google is gaining ground in the latest report from Janrain. The company says that Facebook's overall share of social logins fell to 49 percent as of Q4 2012, down from its all-time high of 54 percent in Q3. Google was the main reason or benefactor of that decline, with its share of social logins growing from 25 percent to 31 percent at the end of 2012. Twitter's share of social logins also dropped a bit, down to seven percent from it's previous high of 10 percent. Here's the current social login [...]

According to financial analysts Facebook Q4 revenue (including payments, fees) could reach $1.5 billion. Search and social marketing platform Kenshoo says that just over 20 percent (20.3 percent) of the company's ad revenue is now coming from mobile. Ghost Town? Study Says 70 Percent Of Facebook Pages Are Inactive

"Ghost town" is a phrase that's been tossed around when describing the apparent low activity levels on Google+, but a new study suggests that it could also apply to business activity using Facebook Pages. Recommend.ly, a social media tools/analytics company that we've covered before when it looked at Wal-Mart's Facebook Page strategy, is now out with a wider study that looks at overall Facebook Page activity ... and it isn't pretty. In October, the company examined more than 5.7 million Facebook Pages with at least 10 "Likes", and used a subset of about three million Pages to dig deeper [...]

Nielsen: Facebook Users Spending 30 Minutes Less There Now Than 6 Months Ago

Facebook is still tops when it comes to how much its average users spends on the site, but that time has declined by nearly a half-hour over the past six months. My assumption is that you can blame mobile for that. The numbers are from Nielsen's Top 10 web brands list for September 2012. Nielsen estimates that Facebook users spent about six hours, 40 minutes on the site in September. That's more than triple the time spent on Yahoo and Google and almost four times the amount of time that users spent on YouTube. But six months ago, in its March 2012 report, Nielsen estimated time spent [...]
