Report: July Release Of Foursquare App To Include Personalized Coupons

foursquare-icon Social check-in service Foursquare will start displaying personalized coupons as a part of its application in July, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. When the start-up releases the next version of its mobile app, it will include functionality that displays promoted personalized local specials purchased by advertisers. Report: Foursquare Plans Ad Platform Launch In June

foursquare-icon Location-based check-in service Foursquare is planning to launch an advertising platform this summer, according to an Ad Age article citing "a person familiar with the matter." According to the report, the new functionality will be a part of the company's merchant platform, which currently allows businesses to claim their profile on the service and offer coupons or other check-in rewards called "specials". Foursquare currently isn't compensated monetarily for including these specials. The new paid media offering will allow merchants to promote their specials within the app or site. The c [...]

How Real Is Social Media Fatigue?

computer-dog-tired-featured Facebook. Twitter. Google+. Pinterest. Foursquare. LinkedIn. Path. How many of these social networks do you belong to? Do you participate in every day? Every week? Every month? When a new one comes along does your heart leap in anticipation, or sink a little when you realize it’s one more thing to add to your already burgeoning list of chores; one more series of tasks on an already too-long to-do list? As pervasive as social media seems, it’s still early days and there have already been shakeouts. Some of us are old and hoary enough to remember Orkut, to once have thought we’d neve [...]

Foursquare Breaks Up With Google Maps, Is It The Beginning Of A Trend?

foursquare-google-maps-featured For years Google Maps were the standard for publishers and developers wanting to integrate maps into their sites. Google Maps were part of the original "mashup." Google's early API, consumer popularity and easy (read: free) licensing terms fueled rapid adoption of Google Maps by third party publishers and developers. But last November Google announced that it would be charging its heaviest maps users starting January 1, 2012 for map views/impressions over 25,000 per day. Each additional 1,000 page loads would cost $4. Google estimated that roughly 4,000 customers would be affected. Short [...]

Is The Next Frontier In Social Media Your TV?

Where are you watching the Big Game this year? Last year, that question was a locational where: a Super Bowl party, at home on the sofa or a local watering hole being the expected answer. This year, the "where" is just as likely to be device specific. On a PC? A tablet? Or a Verizon mobile device? All are possibilities. For the first time, this year's Super Bowl won't just be broadcast, it will be streamed with a host of digital extras -- such as real-time stats and multiple camera angle options -- as part of the deal. NBC hasn't announced it yet, but I'm betting there will be a social [...]

Official: Facebook Grabs Gowalla, Will Deploy Personnel To Timeline

facebook-gowalla-featured CNN Monday reported this afternoon that Facebook has bought social cityguide and check-in app Gowalla. Gowalla has a presence in roughly 60 cities globally. It was well-loved by a core of devotees but lost momentum and mindshare to larger rival Foursquare. Gowalla had two million registered users vs. Foursquare's 10 million. Gowalla shifted models a couple of times before returning to being a local recommendation site/app. According to CNN Money, the majority of Gowalla's employees, including its CEO Josh Williams, will move to Facebook's HQ in Palo Alto. The employees will reportedly be [...]
