Behavior Flow: Better Insights, Better Marketing

google-analytics-icon-250px While there are thousands of different pieces of data available in Google Analytics, unfortunately there aren't thousands of hours in each month for us to slice and dice this data into something useful. Our time limits mean actionable data need to be right at our fingertips -- not always easy with a program that grows more robust as time passes. So how do we solve the problems we face? Is traffic not engaging with your website? Are particular channels not impressed with what you're offering? Do you even know how to tell if those channels are performing well? Help is here! Behavior Flow was a [...]

google-analytics-icon-250px If you've been jonesing to upgrade from regular, old boring Google Analytics to the shiny, new Universal Analytics, Google has announced a new, two-step upgrade. The upgrade involves a new tool that will be available "in the coming weeks" in the admin section of all Google Analytics accounts. The screenshot below shows what it'll look like. Clicking the blue "Transfer" button starts a 24-48 hour process. When that's over, upgrading the tracking code on your website(s) completes the transfer and opens the website to all of the features of Universal Analytics. Upgrade ... Or Google [...]

How To Use Site Search To Get Keyword Insights In A (Not Provided) World

ML 10-2013 3 Not Provided is all anyone is talking about these days -- with good reason. Holding data hostage and forcing users to buy ads to see it is pretty dirty pool, in my opinion. Most of my clients cannot lay out the money just to grab data, so we've had to come up with some creative ways to see information at a keyword level. I've shared previously how using a "Not Provided Filter" can give you insights into landing pages that are triggered by a keyword search. If you know the landing page, you can extrapolate and "guess" what the keywords might be. This is great if you have time to really look [...]

Google Changes Menu Options, Adds New Reports In Google Analytics

google-analytics-featured Next time you check Google Analytics, you may see a new navigation menu and have a hard time finding some of your favorite reports. There's been no announcement that we're aware of, but the main menu that several members of our editorial team are seeing in their Google Analytics accounts are quite different. Under the "Standard Reports" heading, we're seeing these primary sections today: Real-Time Audience Acquisition Behavior Conversions I bolded the new options, which previously said "Traffic Sources" and "Content." Added: As a couple commenters have pointed out, Google [...]

Mobile And The Rise Of “Real World Analytics”

Google indoor maps The new reality of multi-screen conversions compounds the already difficult challenges of accurate attribution and ROI calculation. That's on top of the persistent but largely ignored fact that most internet-influenced consumer spending happens offline. Digital marketers have mostly avoided trying to account for offline conversions in the past because they've been so hard to track on a per-campaign basis. Yet e-commerce is still only about 6 percent of overall US retail (billions vs. trillions). By contrast online-to-offline spending is at least 10x the value of e-commerce. Now, the awar [...]

No Data For You: SEO Experts Offer Opinions On Google’s Move To Withhold Even More Search Term Data

google-privacy-200 Google quietly confirmed earlier this week that it would be encrypting all search data, regardless of whether a user was signed in or not. The company offered the following statement to clarify their sudden decision to withhold the data: We added SSL encryption for our signed-in search users in 2011, as well as searches from the Chrome omnibox earlier this year. We're now working to bring this extra protection to more users who are not signed in. Marketing Land's Danny Sullivan wrote about Google's move to encrypt all non-paid searches, explaining, "The change makes it very likely that in th [...]

Are Your Local PPC Ads Really “Local”?

local-maps-featured Paid Advertising Platforms are growing exponentially on what seems like a weekly basis. What once was Keywords + Ad + Bid = Money has now become a full-time job. Bid adjustments, rules, remarketing, extensions, day-parting, local or geographic targeting, modified broad match, and more -- the vocabulary alone is a struggle for small business owners who do their own marketing. As I review and overhaul paid advertising campaigns for new clients, I've noticed that there are numerous misunderstandings surrounding local paid search advertising in Google and Bing. Targeting with location exte [...]

How To Create Interactive Charts In Excel

final interactive chart in Excel Continuing with my dashboard series that began on Search Engine Land and continued over to Marketing Land when the entire analytics column migrated to Marketing Land, this post is going to talk interactive charts. When you're creating a dashboard, real estate is minimal, so you find ways to consolidate your data and allow the dashboard user to manipulate a single chart different ways. Excel offers a panoply of interactive controls that make this possible. I'll be the first to admit that working with interactive controls were really intimidating to me when I first started. They seemed to hav [...]

Google Adds AdSense Revenue As A Testing Objective In Content Experiments

Google AdSense Logo Google announced today the addition of AdSense Revenue as an experiment objective in Content Experiments. The addition allows AdSense publishers to run A/B tests on Google Analytics Content Experiments Platform that focus specifically on increasing AdSense revenue. Publishers must link their Google Analytics accounts to AdSense accounts in order to use Content Experiments. Once the accounts are linked and the test is set with AdSense Revenue as the objective, the algorithm will split traffic across the experimental variations "to achieve maximum revenue in the shortest amount of time." G [...]

Google Analytics Email Marketing Dashboard For Beginners

google-analytics-featured I received an email from an online retailer today that was a hot mess. It had no text, only one gigantic image, and the image had no alt text or anything to indicate what the email was about before I consented to loading the image. Fail -- major fail. With the sophisticated software and programs available today for email marketing, the state of emails I receive from huge corporations blows me away. Historically, email marketing has been an afterthought. There are those that do it well. Really well. But it seems to me that a majority of email marketing is this last-minute, "crap I forgot [...]

Google Analytics Access Controls Now Fully Launched

Google Analytics icon Good news for everyone that was excited about the news earlier this year that Google Analytics would be introducing new access controls: They're live for all users now. As today's announcement says, this means that Google Analytics users now have "more fine-grained control over access to various parts of their accounts." On a practical level, one immediate benefit is that you can now remove yourself from accounts -- no need to contact old clients, for example, and ask them to revoke your access. Hallelujah! The new access controls are part of the new Google Analytics administratio [...]

Google Brings Tag Manager To Mobile Apps

google-tag-manager-mobile Google's Tag Manager tool is now available for use in mobile apps. The company previewed the new tool back at its I/O developer conference in May, and made the formal announcement today. Google says Tag Manager for Mobile Apps should bring more flexibility for mobile marketers who have to deal with the static nature of mobile apps. Forget to add an event to a key button press? Tough! Need to add conversion tracking for a last minute campaign? Too bad! Realize you need to change an important configuration setting? Sorry, not possible... that is, until now! Previewed at Google I/O earlier [...]

How To Use Visitor Engagement Insights To Improve Conversions

Wile E. Coyote One of my favorite tragic characters is Wile E. Coyote. How can someone be so brilliant yet fail to capture the roadrunner? We see him regularly creating some very elaborate, physics-defying devices and traps, yet he is still unable to catch the bird. I think if he had ever paused for a moment and thought about his failures, he would have realized most of his ideas would have worked with just a little tweaking. Unfortunately for him, his constant failure kept me glued to the TV each Saturday morning when I was a kid. I often wonder if the level of interest would have died off if the road [...]

Google Analytics Opens Invitation To Beta Of The New Real-Time Reporting API

Google Analytics Starting today, Google is inviting Google Analytics users to a closed beta of their newly released real-time reporting API. Opening a number of opportunities to take advantage of real-time analytics, the new API makes it possible for site owners to create queries around real-time data and use the information to benefit their website. Google offered examples of how site owners could use the real-time API, including querying for top visited URLs to create, "a top trending content widget with the number of active readers" or displaying the active visitor count in real-time. According to [...]
