Brands Can Now Turn Google+ Posts Into Interactive Display Ads

google+-post-ads-600x464 Touting it as a way for brands to "make the entire web their social stream," Google today announced the full rollout of +Post ads. The ad program gives advertisers the ability to place Google+ posts onto Google's display advertising network. In testing since December, the program is now available to any Google+ page with at least 1,000 followers. The +Post ads are essentially promoted posts -- links, photos, videos, Hangouts on Air -- that are pushed into the Google Display Network, where they appear as fully interactive content. Viewers see a "Click to Expand" button that triggers [...]

Why You Suddenly Lost All Those Google+ Followers

google-plus-analytics-featured On March 25, many Google+ brand accounts noticed a big dip in followers displayed on profile pages. In fact, Marketing Land decreased by 20%, even Search Engine Land decreased by 40%. Initially some have thought that this was a "spring cleaning" of spammy Google+ accounts following profiles pages; however, it's really pulling out the followers from a combined follower and +1 number. Google+ brand pages, until recently, didn't show a true follower count, and Google+ badges still don't. [caption id="attachment_80167" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Average growth of number of followers as [...]

Study: Fan Engagement On Google+ Narrowly Trails Facebook, Nearly Doubles Twitter

google-plus-600 Here's more evidence that smart marketers shouldn't neglect to include Google+ in their social media mix: Google+ generates nearly as much engagement per follower as Facebook and nearly twice as much as Twitter. The surprising results come from a Forrester Research study of the social profiles of 50 global brands on Facebook, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube and Twitter. Forrester looked at more than 3 million user interactions with more than 2,500 brand posts during the first quarter of 2014 and found that Google+'s rate of engagement per post compared very well with it [...]

Now Google+ Shows You How Many Times Your Profile, Content Have Been Viewed

google-plus-featured For those of you following at home, the social media metrics scorecard has another entry. Google Plus has added the number of views you or your page have generated on the network. Here's how that looks for Sergey Brin's account: Here's Starbucks' page: Google made no splashy announcement about the change. The help page merely explains that "you now can tell how many times your content has been seen by other people, including your photos, posts, and profile page." Googler Eddie Kessler added in a G+ post that the number is a sum of views since October 2012 (Google's "social lay [...]

Google+ Goes Bigger With Super Sized Thumbnails, Headlines

google-plus-600 Following the bigger-is-better trend, Google+ has boosted the size of the thumbnails and headlines that display with posts on the platform. As reported this morning by Google Plus Daily, now if the main image associated with the page you are posting is large enough, it will render across the full span of the G+ news feed display. It's very similar to changes Facebook made last year and Twitter has implemented for some "Twitter Card" partners. Here's the new look: Along with the larger, bolder headline, note that the bottom of the image is serrated, perhaps to give a torn-from-the-n [...]

"If your page is linked to a website that has Google Analytics you can now view your monthly metrics (and comparison to last month) from your Google+ dashboard," claims Waisberg. Waisberg, an analytics advocate at Google, included a screen shot in his post showing how the Google Analytics metrics are displayed, listing new visits, unique visitors and pageviews. Along with his screenshot, Waisberg added the following information from the card's tool tip: This card shows [...]

google-glass-model-featured It's official. Google Glass will be openly available for purchase later this year. That means two things: Expect to see a lot of new Glassers soon, and it's time to start thinking about how such technology will change the way consumers search. Below, we’ll take a look at seven areas likely to be affected and how you can prepare: 1. Death To 10 Blue Links A search on Glass won't return a page with 10 blue links, rather it'll use info cards: As you can see from the screenshot above, you can only view one info card at a time. To move to the next card, you need to s [...]

Consumer Watchdog Files FTC Complaint Over “Send To Anyone On Google+” Feature

consumerwatchdog Consumer Watchdog, the non-profit group that might more accurately be called "Google Watchdog," has filed a complaint with the FTC over Google's recent rollout of a feature that lets Gmail users contact Google+ users without knowing the recipient's email address. Google launched the "Send to Anyone on Google+" feature earlier this month, which lets anyone with a Gmail and Google+ account send messages to anyone else with Gmail and Google+ accounts. Google made the feature opt-out, meaning users that didn't want to potentially get messages from strangers via Gmail/Google+ had to turn it off [...]

FAQ: How The New Gmail “Send To Anyone On Google+” Feature Works

gmail-featured Google has announced that soon, anyone with both a Gmail account and a Google+ account will be able to message anyone else with a Gmail account and Google+ account, even if they don't know their email address. Spam city! Potentially, but Google has some safeguards built in that it hopes will keep this as a useful feature rather than a nightmare. It's complicated, so here's our FAQ on how it all works, based on conversations with Google. What's the new feature? Very soon, people using Gmail will be able to send Gmail messages to people with Google+ accounts, even if they don't know the actual [...]

Sentenced For Circling: Google+ Invite Puts Man Behind Bars

Google+-Jail A Salem man who had a restraining order against him may have circled himself direct to jail, thanks to a Google+ invitation. According to The Salem News, the accused man, Thomas Gagnon, had an active restraining order against him that prohibited him from contacting his ex-girlfriend. The Google+ invite was printed out by the ex, taken to court and an arrest warrant was issued. Here's where the story turns, however. According to the report, Gagnon's lawyer, Neil Hourihan, insists that an invite wasn't sent and that the complaint was "absolutely unfounded." This is very plausible as we know [...]

Google Tests Social Ads, Turns Google+ Posts Into Display Ads To Show Across The Web

google +post ads Today, Google introduced a type of promoted post in Google+ that allows brands to turn their social content into ads that are distributed on the Google Display Network. Toyota USA, Cadbury UK and RITZ crackers are among the test partners participating in the closed beta. Brands can take content posted on Google+ and turn photos, videos and even Hangouts into display ads. Rather than have the ads served only within the Google+ context -- as with social ads on other networks such as Facebook and Twitter -- advertisers can distribute their social content across the web through Google's Display [...]

Google Automatically Creates New Orkut Accounts For Any Logged-in Google User That Visits Orkut.com

google-orkut-logos If you have a Google account -- and who among us doesn't? -- you might want to be careful about visiting Google's other social network, Orkut. Google is automatically creating new Orkut accounts for anyone that visits Orkut.com while already logged in to a Google account. (Try it yourself if you don't mind having an Orkut account setup for you.) If you also have a Google+ account, Google will take the data from it (your name and avatar) to auto-populate your new Orkut account. Frank Strong noticed this a couple days ago; we reached out to Google for comment, but the company hasn't replie [...]

youtube-logo-200 Yesterday on the YouTube Creator Blog, Google announced updates to "Combat the increase in spammy comments" on YouTube. According to the blog post, Google has updated its system to include, "Better recognition of bad links and impersonation attempts, improved ASCII art detection, and changed how long comments are displayed." The updates are in response to what the company claimed were "new opportunities for abuse" since the new system was rolled out two weeks ago. Google+ This weekend, Google updated the Google+ iOS app that allows for full resolution backups of all photos and videos as well as a "Latitude-esque" location sharing feature. While the update 4.6.0 is for iOS, the full res backups are for iOS7 only (which does require adequate cloud storage space). A user profile and location will pop up on the map once this feature is enabled: Users must allow for location sharing and can set at the user or circle level and is a feature that is not a defa [...]

New-Header By now we know that Google is no stranger to testing new cover photos sizes for Google+. Today a new version has arrived with the goal of displaying the full image (not just a preview) while displaying user/page info at the same time. Googler Karthik Nagaraj announced the update on Google+ and also explained that the image that has the blurred effect is actually the cover photo that is simply re-purposed next to the main image. The final product makes for a very unique & modern look that also highlights profile/page info much better than the previous options. Thanks to the ne [...]
