Digg Does The Google Reader Survey That Google Should’ve Done

It's ironic that the best survey of Google Reader users that's probably ever been done is being done by Digg. About a month after announcing its plans to build an RSS reader and asking Google Readers to help out by taking a survey, Digg has started sharing some of the survey results. Digg says it's already received 8,000 survey responses (an astonishing number, in my opinion), and no surprise: The data proves that Google Reader has a lot of power users. It makes sense because RSS never reached mainstream acceptance and has been a popular tool primarily among information connoisseurs. [...]

Feedly Continues To Eat Up Google Reader Mobile Users

Since the announcement of Google Reader closing shop July 1, Feedly has taken the lead for top news app on Androids, iPhones and iPads. After winning the No. 1 spot for news apps on Google Play and U.S. iTunes App Store last week, Feedly showed up No. 2 on Google Play and No. 4 on the U.S. App Store for both iPhones and iPads as of March 24. While a slight drop from last week's rankings, Feedly continues to out-rank other mobile Google Reader alternatives like NewsBlur, a favorite of our corresponding editor, Gary Price. Earlier this month, more than 500,000 Google Readers  transitio [...]

Digg: We’re Building A Google Reader Replacement

Want a good replacement for Google Reader? Perhaps it's appropriate that another brand from the Reader heyday, Digg, is planning to build that. From Digg's blog post today: We’ve heard people say that RSS is a thing of the past, and perhaps in its current incarnation it is, but as daily (hourly) users of Google Reader, we’re convinced that it’s a product worth saving. So we’re going to give it our best shot. We’ve been planning to build a reader in the second half of 2013, one that, like Digg, makes the Internet a more approachable and digestible place. After Google’s announ [...]

Don’t Kill Google Reader Petition On Pace For 75k Signatures In Under 24 Hours

A revolt is afoot. Since Google's announcement to close the popular Google Reader service 17 hours ago, loyal users have taken to a change.org petition in droves. Since being constructed by Dan Lewis 1 hour after the announcement, the petition has reached 76% of its goal toward 75,000 signatures: The petition is averaging 3,570 signatures an hour which equates to a signature every second.  While there are other Google Reader Alternatives out there, the community is speaking out passionately against this early retirement. The petition itself includes some pretty poignant state [...]

12 Google Reader Alternatives

The scramble is on. With news today that Google Reader is shutting down on July 1st, its users are on the hunt for a solid RSS reader alternatives. Here are some options you might want to consider if you're a Google Reader user: 1.) Newsblur This is a top choice from one of our corresponding editors, Gary Price. It's accessible via the Web and also appears to have iOS and Android versions. There's even a Google Reader import tool that will no doubt prove popular. Newsblur has a basic version that's free, but limits the number of feeds you can follow, and news stories show up in th [...]

Google To Close Google Reader On July 1

Google Reader user? Say goodbye. Google has announced the service is closing on July 1. The news came today in a "Spring Cleaning" blog post from Google, where the company said: We launched Google Reader in 2005 in an effort to make it easy for people to discover and keep tabs on their favorite websites. While the product has a loyal following, over the years usage has declined. So, on July 1, 2013, we will retire Google Reader. Users and developers interested in RSS alternatives can export their data, including their subscriptions, with Google Takeout over the course of the next fo [...]
