Android is rolling out a Google Play store redesign for phones and tablets. Created to offer a more simple and clean look, the new design will include bigger images with similarly-themed content grouped together. Canalys’ App Interrogator research published a report showing that there were 13.4 billion app downloads, with revenue of $2.2 billion in the first quarter of 2013. Of that, 74% of the app revenue went through Apple's iTunes network, while Google Play accounted for the most app downloads with 51%. Apple developers earned over $1.6 billion of the $2.2 billion, even though the most number of the app downloads were on Google Play. Google has been inching closer to opening its own retail stores for the past three years. It opened a Google schwag store on its own Mountain View campus in 2010. The number of malicious Android apps has quadrupled so far in 2012, according to the antivirus/security company Trend Micro, and some of those apps are making their way into Google's official app store, Google Play. The company reports that it identified about 5,000 malicious Android apps in the first quarter of 2012 -- a number which rose to 20,000 by the end of Q2. The number doubled from 10,000 to 20,000 in just one month. Google announced earlier that it is now selling the Samsung-made Galaxy Nexus in the Google Play market. Google's original attempts to sell Android handsets directly via its website were unsuccessful and the effort was discontinued.
