Skippable Pre-Roll Ads Come To YouTube Mobile

Skippable pre-roll AdWords for video are coming to YouTube on mobile devices. As the use of smartphones and tablets -- including for video viewing -- grows dramatically, Google AdSense is rolling out its True View in-stream ads to its YouTube mobile platform. Since last November, the company has offered in-search and CPM-based in-stream video ads on mobile devices, but this is the first time the in-stream ads are of the TrueView type -- they are skippable and an advertiser only pays after 30 seconds of viewing. Currently, they're only available on YouTube and not on any display network [...]

iOS 6 Drops YouTube App; A Boon For Google?

Apple released beta 4 of iOS 6, their latest iPhone and iPad OS to developers today, and one glaring omission in the version was the YouTube app. Bad news for Google, or perhaps with some perspective, a benefit? YouTube, along with Maps powered by Google Maps, were some of the first third-party powered Apps to be found on the iPhone, even before there was an app platform. In iOS 6, Apple is replacing Google Maps with their own Apple Maps, and now it appears Apple is dropping YouTube with no replacement. Apple told The Verge that Google and Apple did not renew the license rights to the a [...]

BrightRoll Video Network was second with 1.39 billion video ads shown in June, but tops in ad minutes at 805 million. BrightRoll's ads also reached almost 36 percent of the U.S. online population, compared to about 25 [...]

The biggest change/evolution on the display front in the last couple of months was the announcement from Baljeet Singh, group product manager on video monetization at Google in the US, that AdWords for Video is now “available to all.” “Get out of my (beta) dreams and into my car(t)...”  -- all With a nod to Billy Ocean, this line just might be what “all” will be singing when they realize how easy the new interface is, even for those who have never tried video advertising before. Getting Started With AdWords For Video Baljeet has a nice way with words... “With a glob [...]

Americans Watched More Than 10 Billion Video Ads In May [Report]

For the second consecutive month, U.S. internet users watched a record number of video ads in May. According to the latest comScore Video Metrix report, Americans watched 10.1 billion video ads in May, up from about 9.5 billion in April. May marks the first time that video ads passed 10 billion views. Hulu and Google combined to deliver about three billion of those video ads and were the top two ad properties for the month in terms of count. Hulu users, though, watched far more minutes of video advertising than Google/YouTube users did. As far as video in general is concerned, com [...]

Shortly before the deadline, ICANN announced that it had received more than 1,900 applications. Today, Google announced that it applied for new TLDs in four separate categories: trademarks like .google; core business names like .docs; names that will impr [...]

Google, YouTube Pick Up Copyright Win In France

Google's YouTube won a legal victory today when a French court dismissed a copyright violation lawsuit filed against by TF1, a French television company. According to a New York Times report, TF1's lawsuit asked the court to rule that YouTube was required to pre-filter all content before it was published on the site. But the Tribunal de Grande Instance decided that YouTube's existing system for dealing with copyrighted material is adequate. (That system, called Content ID, prompts YouTube to identify copyrighted material and notify the owner of the possible infringement. The content own [...]

Americans Watched Record Amount Of Online Video Ads In April [Report]

Americans watched a record 9.5 billion video ads during April, according to the latest report from comScore's Video Metrix service. Video ads, comScore says, represented about one of every five videos watched online last month. Leading the way in video ads was Hulu, which delivered about 1.6 billion of those ads, or almost 17 percent of all video ads shown online during the month. That's despite Hulu having a much smaller reach (about 11 percent) of the U.S. population than Google, the No. 2 video ad deliverer whose ads reached about 24 percent of the population. Hulu just shows more [...]

Google+ On Air Hangouts Now Live For the Masses

Google+ users can now publicly broadcast from Google+ and YouTube. You'll also be able to record hangouts and share them after they are over. You would be hard pressed to find a Google+  feature I was more vocal about when brand pages first launch. Hangouts are great for special circles and exclusive content, but not being able to broadcast an event publicly and have anyone join in was limited an frustrating as a marketer. So, it's good news is that Google is changing that. Here's the video explaining more about Hangouts On Air: [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohlHn6Kt5YM[ [...]

The functionality, which brings YouTube video buying into AdWords, began its public beta in September, and Google has made a few tweaks to reporting and measurement for the wide release. "A lot of what we are focused on is how to make video ads much, much easier for all businesses," said Lane Shackleton, product manager for YouTube. [...]

German Court Orders YouTube To Improve Copyright Protections

In a court ruling that both sides are calling a partial victory, a German court has ruled that YouTube must improve its copyright protection in Germany, but stopped short of telling the site to go back and remove all copyrighted material currently on the site. Hamburg's state court has told YouTube Germany that it must prevent users from uploading some music videos whose copyrights belong to the German royalties agency, GEMA. The court wants Google to use software to monitor and stop users from uploading alternate versions (i.e., live recordings) of songs that have already been flagged for [...]

Mad Men (And Women) Get Introduced To The Digital Ad Age In Google Trade Effort

The ads are classics: Coca-Cola's Vietnam-era "Hilltop" ad, where a chorus sang of wanting to buy the world a Coke; Volvo's introduction to the U.S. with an ad that invited people to "Drive It Like You Hate It,"; Alka Seltzer's "I can't believe I ate the whole thing"; and Avis's "We Try Harder" spot -- a TV ad that later became the company's slogan. Even now, decades after they aired, folks in the ad biz remember these iconic campaigns and long to achieve anything approaching their impact on the culture. Anyone in today's interactive advertising business has surely wondered whether [...]

YouTube’s Stunning Stats: 4 Billion Daily Views, An Hour Of Video Uploaded Every Second

I think "SMH" is the right web acronym to use for the latest stats that YouTube has shared this morning -- stats that definitely have me shaking my head. Consider these: More than four billion videos viewed daily around the world. An hour of video is uploaded every second. In the case of the first stat -- four billion views per day -- YouTube says that's up 25 percent in the past eight months. As for the second stat -- an hour of video uploaded per second -- YouTube says that's up more than 30 percent in the past eight months. To put those numbers into perspective, YouTube ha [...]

YouTube Boasts A Trillion Video Views In 2011

Twelve zeroes. A trillion. It looks like this: 1,000,000,000,000 That's how many videos we collectively watched on YouTube in 2011. Or, as the YouTube blog explains, about 140 views for every person on earth and more than double the number of stars in the sky. (Oh, yeah? But it's nothing compared to our $15 trillion national debt, so there!) Still, that's a stunning number. And it's part of YouTube's 2011 Rewind feature that looks back at how and what we watched over the past 12 months. Most Watched YouTube Videos of 2011 This list doesn't include videos from major music label [...]
