New Flickr Debut Puts Photos First, Free Terabyte Of Space For Each User

Yahoo followed up its acquisition of Tumblr today with a relaunch of a "better, brighter Flickr" at a press conference in New York City. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said she challenged the Flickr team to "make Flickr awesome again." The new Flickr puts photos first. Acknowledging that Flickr had become a mishmash of small thumbnails, links and words, today's launch showcases the new approach to an immersive photo experience. "We want all your photos" Adam Cahan, SVP of mobile and emerging products at Yahoo announced that all photos are full resolution and each user will have a free tera [...]

Yahoo Buys Tumblr For $1.1 Billion, Promises “Not To Screw It Up”

On a conference call to discuss Yahoo's exceptional $1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr, Yahoo CEO, Marissa Mayer's admiration for Tumblr's achievements and culture was refreshingly transparent. Tumblr will continue to operate independently, David Karp will remain CEO, and Yahoo has promised "not to screw it up." Tumblr has more than 300 million monthly users and is signing up 120,000 new users per day. The deal is expected to increase Yahoo's total audience by 50% to more than a billion monthly users. Traffic could grow by 20%. In the press release, David Karp, CEO of Tumblr, addressed [...]

For Social Media Viewing, Twitter Is Live TV; Facebook Is DVR

When you follow someone on Twitter, you see everything they post. When you follow someone on Facebook, it decides what you see. Which is right? I'd say both, and it comes down to the live TV versus DVR personalities of each service. Should Facebook Show Everything? The issue of Facebook deciding what to show people in their Facebook news feed came up this week when Nick Bilton of the New York Times wrote about how over the past year, the engagement on his posts had dropped, despite his having gained a huge increase in Facebook followers. That echoed concerns from Star Trek alum and soc [...]

Ask + About.com = A Winning Formula For IAC – And Online Marketers

IAC, parent company of Ask.com and many other prominent websites, has acquired About.com from the New York Times with a $300 million cash deal, trumping a $270 million offer from Answers.com. Many news sites have reported details of the acquisition, but I want to focus on the implications and opportunities for marketers that much of the news coverage seems to have overlooked. About has nearly 1,000 topic sites, more than 3 million unique articles and nearly 100 million unique monthly users worldwide. Ask.com has more than 100 million users globally and despite fading from the top ranks [...]

About.com Will Almost Certainly Be Sold – But Who’s Buying?

Reuters is reporting that Barry Diller's IAC Corp. has apparently trumped a bid from Answers.com to buy About.com from the New York Times company. The New York Times issued a press release a couple of weeks ago confirming it was in negotiations to sell About, but very little other information has surfaced about the potential deal since then. The Times is selling About because it has been struggling with its overall business. Last month, the Times Co wrote down value of About by $195 million. The Times originally purchased About from Primedia, Inc. for $410 million in 2005. Prior to that, Pr [...]

Popular SEO community and tools provider SEOmoz has expanded their offerings today as they announced the acquisition of Portland based Twitter analytics company Followerwonk. The exact acquisition cost was not disclosed but Rand Fishkin, SEOmoz CEO, stated that the total deal value is:the total deal value is: "in the low 7 figures (between 1mm and 4mm) and that it includes three items - cash upfront, ongoing cash incentives for the years the Wonk crew stay at Moz, and SEOmoz stock." Followerwonk allows users to search for, compare, analyze, track and sort followers. In the official annou [...]

Google Nabs Wildfire Social Marketing Platform For Reported $250 Million

Google to marketers: we may be a bit, uh, behind in social, but come buy social programs through us anyway. That seems to be the gist of what the search giant is saying with its acquisition of Wildfire, a social media marketing platform that works primarily with Facebook, but also with Twitter, YouTube, Google+, Pinterest and LinkedIn. Though Google didn't disclose a purchase price when announcing the acquisition, reports peg the value of the deal at around $250 million. The union makes a lot of sense for Google, which has historically not had a problem with purchasing companies that wor [...]
