Twitter, Nielsen Will Create A New Social TV Rating Metric

This is a coup for Twitter: The company is partnering with Nielsen to become the first arbiter of the most socially successful U.S. TV programs. The companies have a new multi-year agreement to create the "Nielsen Twitter TV Rating," a measurement that Nielsen says will serve as a complement to its existing TV ratings. While the latter measures "first screen" viewership (i.e., on the television), the new Twitter TV Rating will serve as an industry-standard metric for "second screen" activity -- i.e., the reach of conversation on Twitter about TV programs. I called it a "coup" for Twitter [...]

TweetLevel: A GPS For Twitter

The dog never ate my homework. Or at least, I never tried to use that as an excuse, which is odd, considering my family actually owned a dog kennel. To this day, the memory of homework sends chills down my spine -- I just wasn't one of those people who dashed off their evening assignments with ease. If only they had called it research. Research evokes pictures of Mission Impossible dossiers of secret agents, or scientists discovering a breakthrough cure for a killer pandemic. Research is a key task in social media marketing. We have to listen to and analyze our communities, perhaps [...]

Dlvr.it allows publishers to automatically distribute content from an RSS feed out to social networks including Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Twenty Dollars For A Twitter App? Blame Twitter’s API Rules

Would you pay $20 for a Twitter client? Especially when Twitter has its own free client, and several other Twitter clients are also free? That's the question that Tapbots is asking Twitter users. The company, makers of the excellent and popular (and free) Tweetbot client for iOS, has just released its desktop Mac version of Tweetbot ... and it comes with a $19.99 price tag in the Mac App Store. Why? In its announcement today, Tapbots says $20 is "not that expensive" for a piece of software that might get used every day. But the price isn't just a reflection of development time and cos [...]

How Marketers Can Tap Into Twitter Lists

"He's makin a list, He's checkin it twice" -Santa Claus is Coming to Town, ‪Haven Gillespie People love lists. In the opera Don Giovanni, the licentious main character’s servant Leporello maintained a list of his boss’s conquests. As children, we might have been encouraged to make lists of what we wanted for our birthday, while our parents made lists of groceries to be picked up on the way home. And now that we need a book for vacation, we might even consult the best-sellers list. If you know your HTML, you’ll know that a numbered list is an ordered list, while a list sim [...]

Google Nabs Wildfire Social Marketing Platform For Reported $250 Million

Google to marketers: we may be a bit, uh, behind in social, but come buy social programs through us anyway. That seems to be the gist of what the search giant is saying with its acquisition of Wildfire, a social media marketing platform that works primarily with Facebook, but also with Twitter, YouTube, Google+, Pinterest and LinkedIn. Though Google didn't disclose a purchase price when announcing the acquisition, reports peg the value of the deal at around $250 million. The union makes a lot of sense for Google, which has historically not had a problem with purchasing companies that wor [...]

Fifty Shades Of Social Media Measurement Tools

(Full Disclosure:  The author’s company sells a social media measurement product) At least once a week I run across an article or blog post about tools for measuring social media. Headlines like “5 Social Media Measurement Tools That Save Time and Money” or “Six Free Social Media Measurement Tools for B2B” have become as common as graduation parties in June. While it is encouraging to see so many measurement options emerging, the wide range of products in this space can be confusing. Part of the problem is that the term “social media measurement” is used to describe tools [...]

Bitly Gets Back To Its URL Shortening Roots

In response to some very vocal feedback in the past week, Bitly has tweaked its new interface to make URL shortening faster, easier and more prominent. Many Bitly users were upset when the company relaunched its website last week and, in the process, shifted more toward a social experience than a URL shortening one. As I wrote in our coverage, "URL shortening almost seems like an afterthought in the new design." Bitly says it heard the feedback: We mean it when we say we've been reading all your tweets and emails. And we're listening! In the week since our release, we're already maki [...]
