Advertisers using the Yahoo!Bing Ad Network received a number of updates in April, including new search and filter options, search query reports that include stop words and special characters, and updated ad appeal rules with new appeal status designations to avoid confusion on whether or not an appealed ad is active. After launching new looks for Windows and Office last year, Microsoft is working toward rebranding additional products, including Bing, Skype and Xbox. Earlier today, Microsoft reported $20.49 billion in fiscal quarterly revenue (Q3 13). That figure was just shy of analysts' consensus estimates of $20.5 billion; however, earnings-per-share beat estimates. Despite the "miss," revenues were up across the board, even in the Windows division though PC sales are in decline. Google took the lead in US digital display ad revenue last year, earning $2.26 billion. After coming in second to Facebook in 2011, Google outsold their top competitor in 2012, selling $80 million more than Facebook's $2.18 billion. In last week's digital display ad earnings report, eMarketer predicts Google will continue to lead Facebook and Yahoo, earning an estimated $3.11 billion in digital display ad revenue by year's end. Post PC era indeed. Microsoft announced quarterly results yesterday and, although they were massive, they were flat or down compared with a year ago. Overall Microsoft reported revenue of $16.01 billion. Windows software sales were down 33 percent compared with a year ago. They came in a $3.24 billion vs. $4.87 billion in 2011. Microsoft announced strong fiscal Q3 results earlier this afternoon. The company reported revenues of $17.4 billion, which was a 6 percent improvement from a year ago. Net income was $5.11 billion. The Online Services Division, which houses Bing and AdCenter, reported revenue of $707 million. There was another loss of $479 million, but that was a roughly $300 million improvement vs a year ago ($776 million). Entertainment and devices also showed a loss of $229 million. Yesterday a new feature was announced by Microsoft that allows logged-in Facebook users to link related pages to themselves.  The new product, 'linked pages,' not only allows users to link pages to themselves, but also to friends. Yesterday afternoon both Google and Microsoft released quarterly earnings. Google posted its highest gross revenues to date but missed analysts' Q4 expectations. Microsoft posted $20.89 billion in fiscal Q2 revenue (calendar Q4) and came in above analyst expectations. Overall, Microsoft's top-line was 5 percent above last year. While Google is known for its fanciful logos, Bing takes a different approach, using a new, luscious photograph as its entire home page each day. While buttons on the page allow you to go back through photos from the previous week, until now there's been no way to see more. Microsoft Canada has compiled a gallery of 2011 Bing home page photos that lets you see the entire set from last year.
