Microsoft Posts $20.49B Quarterly Revs: Online Ads Worth $784M, Rev Per Search Up

MicrosoftSquare Earlier today, Microsoft reported $20.49 billion in fiscal quarterly revenue (Q3 13). That figure was just shy of analysts' consensus estimates of $20.5 billion; however, earnings-per-share beat estimates. Despite the "miss," revenues were up across the board, even in the Windows division though PC sales are in decline. (At the time of this report, the earnings call had yet to take place.) There was very little mention of the performance of Windows 8 or Windows Phones in the earnings statements and related material. Here's the breakdown by Microsoft division: Windows Division: reve [...]

Microsoft Revenues Soft As Company Awaits Windows 8 Rollout

microsoft-earnings-business-featured Post PC era indeed. Microsoft announced quarterly results yesterday and, although they were massive, they were flat or down compared with a year ago. Overall Microsoft reported revenue of $16.01 billion. Windows software sales were down 33 percent compared with a year ago. They came in a $3.24 billion vs. $4.87 billion in 2011. Microsoft attributed this in large part to the transition to Windows 8 and delayed enterprise and consumers purchases in anticipation of the launch. Microsoft's other cash cow business, Office, declined a much less severe 2 percent to $5.5 billion (from $5.63 bill [...]

Klout Gains Clout With Microsoft Investment

klout-score-featured Bing's social sidebar is now showing Klout information, but this is happening for more than the typical partnership deal. Microsoft is now an investor in Klout. From Klout's blog post today: To build towards that future, I am proud to announce that Microsoft has made a strategic investment in Klout and that we have signed a multi-year agreement where Bing will become one of Klout’s most significant partners. No terms beyond that are given. Klout recently underwent a redesign to help reposition it as a type of social resume service. I'd say Klout has been struggling with the perceptio [...]

Microsoft said it sold 1.4 million consoles in fiscal Q3. But sales were down 48 percent over last year. The company [...]

Bing & Facebook See Deeper Search Integration With “Linked Pages”

Yesterday a new feature was announced by Microsoft that allows logged-in Facebook users to link related pages to themselves.  The new product, 'linked pages,' not only allows users to link pages to themselves, but also to friends. To see all linked pages simply click on the tab underneath the search box.  Those Facebook friends with a linked page will show up in the left column.  When pages are linked to a profile, the Facebook result displays first with all other linked pages below: One missing option that may anger users is that users cannot move other pages above the Facebook [...]

Bing Bets On Sports, Entertainment To Attract Gen Y

bing-2013-logo-featured At the two-minute warning of the NFC Championships last weekend, the country got a glimpse of Bing’s new ad campaign, Bing is for #Doing. Bing just hopes that Gen Y viewers were taking notice. The spots, which take a storytelling approach and feature adventure sports athletes Kevin Pearce, Bobby Brown, Kaityln Farrington and Gretchen Bleiler, are the beginning of a long-term shift in the Bing advertising strategy -- a focus on “doing” versus being “a decision engine,” as well as a continued goal of attracting younger online users. Steve Ballmer’s Last CES Keynote: Metro, Metro, Metro & Windows, Window, Windows

hug If you were expecting big news from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's final CES keynote, forget it. "Windows Store" for applications is coming in February. Aside from that, his conversation-style keynote with Ryan Seacrest was more a recap than a big look forward. "In 2012, what's next? Metro, Metro, Metro, and, of course, Windows, Windows, Windows," Ballmer said, when Seacrest asked him at the end of the talk about things to come. The "Metro" user interface, those tile-like objects familiar to anyone who knows Windows Phone, was shown working on the forthcoming Window 8 operating system [...]

Ogling Bing’s Year In Pictures 2011

While Google is known for its fanciful logos, Bing takes a different approach, using a new, luscious photograph as its entire home page each day. While buttons on the page allow you to go back through photos from the previous week, until now there's been no way to see more. Microsoft Canada has compiled a gallery of 2011 Bing home page photos that lets you see the entire set from last year. You can scroll through the pictures by month, and a slider at the bottom of the page lets you view the photos on a daily basis. Microsoft plans to keep the gallery active through the end of January&m [...]

Holiday Deals Sites Confirm: Bing Dropped Them Just Before Black Friday & Cyber Monday

bing drop off It was nothing new, Bing said, about dropping sites for being too "thin" on content. But it was new to many Black Friday and Cyber Monday deal sites that found themselves banned just before those busy shopping days. Since we first reported on the sites going missing at our sister-site Search Engine Land, several merchants have confirmed that after periods of ranking well, Bing decided they should be banned. Killed On Thanksgiving Day From Thanksgiving Black Friday Ads, came these charts: The top chart shows traffic that was going to the site from Google unpaid "organic" searches on No [...]
