A billion people rely on Office every day, and we’ve wor [...]

Microsoft Posts $20.49B Quarterly Revs: Online Ads Worth $784M, Rev Per Search Up

MicrosoftSquare Earlier today, Microsoft reported $20.49 billion in fiscal quarterly revenue (Q3 13). That figure was just shy of analysts' consensus estimates of $20.5 billion; however, earnings-per-share beat estimates. Despite the "miss," revenues were up across the board, even in the Windows division though PC sales are in decline. (At the time of this report, the earnings call had yet to take place.) There was very little mention of the performance of Windows 8 or Windows Phones in the earnings statements and related material. Here's the breakdown by Microsoft division: Windows Division: reve [...]

In 2009, Microsoft agreed with the Commission to offer a browser "choice screen" (featuring IE, Firefox, Chrome, etc.) on its Windows PC software to enable consumers to make a browser selection and not simply "choose" IE by default. That choice screen reportedly disappeared in Febr [...]

September Smartphone Market: Once Again The Apple-Android Show

It's getting very boring to write about the US smartphone market, which is a two horse race. Metrics firm comScore reported that in September Android grew its dominant market share to 52.5 percent. Powered by the iPhone 5, Apple grew more on a percentage basis (1.9 percent) to achieve a market share of 34.3 percent. The largest handset maker in the US remains Samsung, followed by LG. Windows 8: A Touch Too Far?

windows-8-featured I've spent the weekend playing with a new Windows 8 computer as well as a Microsoft Surface tablet. My first impressions so far? Isn't it a pity that Microsoft ruined Windows with all this touch stuff. I'm going to keep playing with both and trying not to have a knee-jerk reaction. But Microsoft's big picture with Windows seems to be that touch-capable devices are part of our future, so we'd better touchify everything. The problem is, what works on a desktop computer doesn't necessarily work on a tablet -- or on a non-touchscreen computer. With Windows 8, trying to open the import [...]
