Pinterest Introduces “Rich Pins” With More Content To Drive More Actions

In an effort to make its pins (images) more useful and actionable Pinterest is introducing more information into selected categories of pins: movies, products and recipes. These new "rich pins" provide additional background and information, depending on the category. After looking for some time this evening, I was unable to find any rich pins "in the wild." However, you can see what it looks like in a screenshot provided by the company (below). The additional information beneath the image is what's new. In the case of food/recipes, ingredients and cooking times are provided. Product pins [...]

Pinterest App Gets New Mention, Notification & Search Features

Pinterest is upping its mobile game by adding more mention, notification and search features to its iOS and Android apps. Now including the "@" sign before a name makes it possible for Pinterest users to mention friends within the app. The new notification feature alerts users via the app when they have been mentioned or if a comment has been made on one of their pins. Push notifications also have been added, letting users know they received a comment or have been mentioned without opening the app. Because the nature of Pinterest includes finding content from across the Web, the Pint [...]

Brands Wanting More Leverage On Pinterest Should Follow The Lead Of Better Homes & Gardens

Social media metrics firm Unmetric evaluated over 5,000 branded Pinterest pages to determine which brands are leading on the social networking site built on images. The data gathered spanned from all time up until March 14, 2013 to identify the top five brands in five different categories: most followers, most comments, most likes, most pins and most repins. Of all the brands succeeding on Pinterest, Better Homes and Gardens made the most appearances, showing up in three of the five categories. The report revealed that brands with fashion, recipe, home and wedding boards score the highest a [...]

Pinterest Launches ‘Old School’ Improvements To New Look

Launching a new UX and design is tough. Reverting to old features and functionality can be even tougher. That's exactly what Pinterest did today with new design improvements. Unlike many social sites, they listened to their users' feedback and rolled back some features that were lost in the new design shuffle. The notable additions that were brought back include: See It Now Once an item has been pinned, users can "see it now" to see the pin live. Pinned From One of the bigger knocks on the new design was the lack of a "pinned from" element. Users will now be able to se [...]

Yellow Light Social Media: Use These Tactics With Caution

Smart social media marketers know that some tactics are totally off the table. Spamming that Google Plus community with your off-topic links? That's a no-no. Auto-DMs to new Twitter followers? No way. Then there are tactics that aren't inherently bad, but you may not want to use them every day. Like pop-up ads, advertising jingles or re-targeting campaigns, these tactics can be just shy of annoying if used incorrectly, but often get the kind of results that make them irresistible to try. Let's call these "yellow light" social media tactics. When you come to a yellow light in traffic, [...]

Your Links On Pinterest May Be Stopping Traffic In Its Tracks

Pinterest has been considered a top traffic driver for many sites, most recently showing its marketing clout by launching Pinterest Web Analytics. But, clicking on an image isn’t the slam-dunk traffic driver as it may seem. And, adding a shortened link to the caption of a pin may be stopping potential traffic in its tracks. If you spend any time on Pinterest, you’ll know that clicking on a pin only brings you to an image, and as a user, you need to click twice in order to get to the original source. Here at Marketing Land, we've been doing some Pinterest testing over the last few weeks, [...]

Survey: 71% Of Hashtag Users Are Using Hashtags From Their Mobile Device

According to a recent mobile hashtag survey by RadiumOne, 58 percent of respondents said they use hashtags on a regular basis, and 70 percent of the hashtag users are doing so from their mobile device. RadiumOne's survey evaluated how consumers perceive, value, and use hashtags. Of the 494 survey respondents, 71 percent were female and 44 percent, middle-aged. (RadiumOne noted that while social media use is most predominant with 18 to 24-year olds, comScore credits middle-aged women as the group most responsible for growth in social media site usage.) Another key insight from RadiumO [...]

Pinterest Takes On Two Domain Fights: Pinterest.info & Amazon’s .pin Request

Domain Name Wire is reporting that Pinterest has gotten involved in two separate domain-related fights: one over an existing domain registration and another over Amazon's plans to create a new generic top-level domain (gTLD). Firstly, Pinterest has formally objected to Amazon's request to own a new .pin domain. That's one of 75 new domains that Amazon applied for in ICANN's ongoing expansion of the top-level domain space. Barnes & Noble and a couple authors' groups have also objected to some of Amazon's other domain applications. Secondly, Domain Name Wire also reports that Pinterest [...]

Pinterest Buys Local Recommendations App Livestar For Talent

Pinterest has confirmed its purchase of Livestar, a mobile/local recommendations app -- but the purchase is about the team of engineers more than the service itself. In an email, a Pinterest spokesperson tells us: We think the Livestar team is a natural fit for Pinterest because of their commitment to inspiring people to do things in their everyday lives through social and expert recommendations. The Livestar engineering team will be joining Pinterest in the coming weeks. CEO and founder Fritz Lanman will not be joining the team, but he will continue to advise Pinterest. As for Livesta [...]

Pinterest Analytics: Making The Most “Actionable” Social Network More Actionable

Last night, Pinterest announced that it was introducing Web analytics -- dare we call them "Pinalytics"? This may well be a first step toward a larger monetization strategy. Regardless, it makes the site more marketer-friendly and provides insights into activity and interaction with boards and images on the site. The newly available metrics include impressions, volume (activity/people), recent pins and most-repinnned images. Marketers and brands can also see what pins drove the most visits to their sites. Pinterest Web analytics are available to anyone with a verified account. Once ver [...]

Pinterest Reportedly Set To Announce Business Analytics Product

Pinterest will announce an analytics product for its business users as early as Tuesday, according to Reuters. Details are sketchy, but Reuters suggests that Pinterest's analytics tool will: "show businesses the number of visitors it delivers to their websites" "provide information about user activity on Pinterest as it relates to a particular company, such as the frequency with which people are clicking on a company's online photos" It sounds fairly basic from that description, but you could certainly argue that any type of official analytics is better than nothing. Reuters say [...]

Is Social Content Curation The Next “Better” Thing?

Social content curation has blown up in the past year, after a late start that began to show traction around 2007-2008. Pinterest continues to experience massive growth, with Wanelo nipping at its heels. Social media users have gotten smarter when it comes to sharing; many are no longer posting Facebook statuses about what they ate and are instead using social networks to share their passions, ideas, and content they love. Social Media Content Value For Brands The value of content for brands has been slow and time-coming, but businesses are beginning to realize it's not the fact that you [...]

Pinterest Lands Another $200 Million In Funding

Pinterest has secured another round of funding, this one to the tune of $200 million. It values the image-based social network at $2.5 billion. AllThingsD broke the news this afternoon, and received this confirmation statement from Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann: "Our focus is on helping millions of people discover things they love and get inspiration to go do those things in their life. This investment gives us more resources to help realize that vision." Pinterest recently completed its first acquisition with the January purchase of Punchfork, a popular recipe site. That was, no doub [...]

The biggest change occurs with the look of the pin. Big, bold pictures are displayed alongside pins from the same board, related pins and other boards that the pin has been pinned to: Additionally, the navigation has been enhanced to make browsing easier and more intuitive: Lastly, changes have occurred "behind the scenes" that will "hopefully made things faster." If this new design test includes spee [...]

Pinterest Makes First Acquisition By Scooping Up Recipe Discovery Site Punchfork

Pinterest is now officially in the business of acquisitions. Punchfork, a popular recipe discovery site, has officially been acquired by Pinterest. Punchfork acts and looks similar to Pinterest, but actually pulls more content onto pages specifically around each recipe. According to the official announcement, the Punchfork team will be joining the Pinterest team in their San Francisco headquarters. The Punchfork site, API and mobile apps will be retired as Pinterest will essentially be closing the doors on Punchfork. No price for the acquisition has been disclosed. It will be [...]

How To Integrate Pinterest Into Your Emails

More than just a social hub to share images, Pinterest has become a lifestyle brand itself. Exuding a feeling of simple, clean, nearly dreamy -- dare I say aspirational -- moments of pleasure, it's actually influencing a new aesthetic style. In fact, one of the common complaints is how spellbinding the Pinterest experience becomes as users spend hours upon hours exploring content and seeking out new curators of style, inspiration and taste. Adopted primarily by women and at an astounding pace (at this rate there’ll soon be more people with Pinterest accounts than toothbrushes), it’s an [...]

Pinterest Gets Presidential As The White House Joins & Throws A Social For Pinners

Even the White House can't escape the Pinterest hype. On Saturday the White House officially joined Pinterest, and did so in fashion. Upon joining the ranks of the lay-pinners, the White House announced the "White House Social" on December 17th to kick-off their Pinterest presence. On the White House officially states the following about the Social: "To kick off our presence on Pinterest, we're inviting our newest followers to join us for a Holiday Social at the White House.
