Upon joining the ranks of the lay-pinners, the White House announced the "White House Social" on December 17th to kick-off their Pinterest presence. On the White House officially states the following about the Social: "To kick off our presence on Pinterest, we're inviting our newest followers to join us for a Holiday Social at the White House. With its incredible rise to popularity, Pinterest has become a big target for spammers. New systems have been implemented to help identify and report spam. The Pinterest quality team has been busy analyzing report data and are now making a move to ban these fraudulent Pinners -- forever. The bans will be "removed for good." Users may see a drop in followers in this clean sweep of spammers. Pinterest estimates that 99% of users will lose less than 10 followers.  The Pinterest team is also exploring ways to prevent these accounts from ever being created in the first place. Pinning The Competition: Pinterest’s Four-Digit Growth Is Tops Of 2012

The big three sites (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) are about to become the big four. Pinterest is here to stay and was the clear cut winner in Nielsen’s 2012 Social Media Report. Pinterest showed the most growth year-over-year for social desktop usage, social web usage and social app usage. Pinterest saw a 1,047% increase in unique PC visitors, and is aiming to surpass LinkedIn this year. The social site that show the next highest growth was Google+ that saw an 80% increase in traditional web users.  Pinterest’s mobile growth also dwarfed the competition. The popular bookmarking sit [...]

Some of the benefits that businesses will gain with the new accounts are better tools, case studies and insight into new features. Verify your website Brands can now officially become verified and be viewed as the official company source. Pinterest Debuts In comScore’s Top 50 Web Properties

You could see this one coming a mile away: Social image-sharing site Pinterest has finally cracked comScore's monthly list of the top 50 web properties in the U.S. The September Top 50 is just out, and Pinterest squeaked in at No. 50 with an estimated 25.3 million visitors. That puts it still slightly behind the declining MySpace (26 million estimated visitors). Instagram and Tumblr are also slightly ahead and Pinterest and stand at 44th and 42nd, respectively. Pinterest has been growing dramatically for at least a year, but its recent growth is no doubt being fueled by the site' [...]

Why Marketers Will Have A Pinerly Pinterest Strategy in 2013

It is always fun to see the offshoots of popular social media sites. TweetDeck, HootSuite and Radian 6 could never have existed without sites as popular as Facebook and Twitter. Well, there is a new third-party tool in town called Pinerly. And while it is still in invite-only/beta mode, many are speculating that marketers will have a Pinerly Pinterest strategy in 2013. What Is Pinerly? Pinerly allows you to create a campaign and post it to Pinterest. It then delivers data such as click-throughs, likes and repins. For those of you who have run a Pinterest contest or engaged in Pinterest [...]

Pinterest Users Can Now Block, Report Accounts

Marketers that are active on Pinterest may want to tread a little more carefully now, thanks to a couple new features that Pinterest is rolling out this week. Pinterest users now have the ability to block and/or report others at the account level. Reporting was previously available only on individual pins, which was an inefficient way for users to tell Pinterest about accounts that might be violating the site's guidelines. Both new options are available under a small flag icon on the profile page. Here's a screenshot from Pinterest's announcement: As you can see, users have severa [...]

Study: 70 Percent Of Pinterest Users Are There For Shopping Inspiration

This should come as no surprise to anyone that's done more than just take a quick glance at Pinterest: Consumers rely heavily on the site when they're looking for product- and shopping-related inspiration. It's also, as I'll explain below, good news for Pinterest's future business plans. A recent BizRate Insights study compared why online shoppers in the US and Canada use Pinterest and Facebook. Both sites scored highly as a source of entertainment, but Pinterest users are there for commerce-related reasons more so than Facebook users. Seventy percent of Pinterest users say they use the [...]

Pinterest May Have More Visitors Than Tumblr; If Not, It Will Soon

The folks at Compete made a splash today with a blog post that shows how Pinterest recently surpassed Tumblr in terms of unique visitors. Compete called it "monumental" and the news spread pretty quickly on Twitter and other tech/social circles. Compete's chart shows Pinterest on a more rapid rise toward 25 million uniques, while Tumblr traffic is rising more steadily toward the same number. It shows Pinterest surpassing Tumblr in August of this year. We checked in with comScore to see if their data showed the same thing. The answer? Not quite, but comScore shows that Pinterest is [...]

Social Network Demographics: Pew Study Shows Who Uses Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest & Others

There are stereotypes attached to certain social networks about the makeup of their user base. LinkedIn is for business people. Facebook has a lot of older Americans. Pinterest is for girls. That's the conventional wisdom. (And just this week, a local friend of mine -- a guy -- gave me a hard time when he found that I have a Pinterest account. I'm very comfortable with that.) But are the stereotypes true? In a report issued this week that's ostensibly about social photo/video sharing activities, the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project also shared its latest social n [...]

Survey: Facebook Best For B2C Sales and Leads; LinkedIn For B2B

A new survey shows that when it comes to generating leads and sales, Facebook gets top marks among business-to-consumer marketers while LinkedIn does well for the business-to-business marketer. Twitter comes in as a strong second place winner for B2C leads. The data comes from the 2012 State Of Digital Marketing report from WebMarketing123, a California-based digital marketing agency. It's the second year for the report, which surveys over 500 US marketers, including companies like Sony, GE, Bose and FedEx. Sales & Leads From Social Media Sites Part of the survey asked which social [...]

PinPointing: Zappos’ Clever New Tool To Monetize Pinterest

What do you do when your customers share a lot on Pinterest, but all that sharing doesn't drive the revenue needle? If you're Zappos, you launch a nifty new site that turns Pinterest activity into shopping recommendations. It's called PinPointing and it's the first of what could eventually become a standard tool for retailers ... assuming that it starts to drive more revenue. Zappos: Twitter Orders Average More Revenue Than Facebook & Pinterest Zappos has been getting mixed results from Pinterest. The Amazon-owned retailer tells Bloomberg that its customers share more often on Pint [...]

Report: 17% Of Marketers Using (Or Planning To Use) Pinterest For Business Purposes

With the recent mobile/tablet app additions and public opening of Pinterest, adoption rates within the marketing community are rising. A recent study by the Creative Group  showed that 7% of marketers are currently using Pinterest in their marketing mix and that 10% of marketers are planning to. The survey was made up of marketing and advertising executives from randomly selected companies with more than 100 or more employees.. The majority (44%) of respondents replied that they were not interested in using Pinterest for business purposes and 17% were interested but still hesitant. For [...]

Pinterest (Finally) Gets Serious About Mobile With New iOS, Android Apps

Pinterest has become one of social media's big boys over the past year with its surge in traffic (and the attendant growing pains) and big funding rounds, but it hasn't had a mobile experience to complement or even aid in that growth. It does now. During its first summer party last night in San Francisco, Pinterest announced an upgrade to its iOS app and also its first Android-specific app. The apps are available in Apple's App Store and in Google Play, or you can use the handy links that Pinterest is providing on its website. Kindle Fire owners will be able to get Pinterest from the [...]

Invitation Not Required: Pinterest Opens To The Public

If the lack of an invitation was keeping you from joining Pinterest, your day has come! Pinterest is now officially open to the public, no invite required. In addition to Twitter and Facebook logins users can sign-up for an account with just an email address. To set up your account, head on over to Pinterest ... no need to bring an invitation. [...]

The Top Five Things Businesses Can Do On Pinterest

Pinterest marketing is one of the latest things that internet marketing consultants are trying to stay on top of. The basic actions on Pinterest that can be done by businesses make it possible to stay connected with current fans of their brands and products while also growing brand exposure. Re-Pins Re-pinning pins that relate to your industry and values is the fastest way to grow a company's own pin boards while also getting a good idea of what is popular in those industries. Re-pins are actually a good part of regular maintenance, as they are fairly quick to do. Regular Maintenance [...]

Pinterest Is Throwing A Summer Party To Build Community

It's no secret that building a community -- if it's done right -- can help a business grow by creating loyal customers/users/fans. An active, dedicated community was (and is) Yelp's ticket to success when it launched in 2004, and Google is cloning Yelp's plan with its own local community efforts more recently. And now Pinterest is taking its own stab at community building. The company announced yesterday via Facebook that it'll host a summer party in San Francisco the week of August 13th. But it's not a wide-open, anyone's invited event. Users have to make a video explaining "how Pin [...]

Google+ Debuts With ACSI Consumer Satisfaction Score Well Above Facebook’s

The annual American Customer Satisfaction Index is out for social media sites, measuring satisfaction with Google+ for the first time against other social networks. What a debut! Google's year-old social network had the best satisfaction while the world's most popular social network, Facebook, came in last. Top Marks For Google+ The scores look like this: On the scale, 100 would be perfect satisfaction. Google+ came in at 78, or what I'd call a B- or C+ letter grade, far from perfect. But it was much better than Twitter (64 points, rated for the first time), LinkedIn (63 points, also rate [...]

Pinterest Aims To Appease With More Attribution

Pinterest is now adding specific attribution for several more sites when images and other content are saved/shared by its users. According to the company's blog post, photos from Etsy and 500px, along with content from Kickstarter, Slideshare and SoundCloud are now displaying direct credit to each source. Pinterest users aren't able to change or remove the attribution. All new pins are being attributed to these sites, and Pinterest also says it'll go back and add it to previous pins, too. Here's what it looks like for pins from Etsy. These sites join Flickr, YouTube, Behance and V [...]

Applebee’s Mocks Social Media Users In An Attempt To Go Viral On Social Media

Of all the ways to go viral, Applebee's has chosen to make fun of the very people it wants to spread its message: social media users. Last week, the company launched a campaign that revolves around LifeIsBetterShared.com, which redirects to a Tumblr at lifebettershared.tumblr.com, and includes three videos that mock mommy bloggers, Twitter users and Pinterest users. The whole idea seems to be that, if you're going to share, it's better to do it face-to-face. At an Applebee's restaurant. And, if you're sharing on social media, you're pretty much a loser. That's what I get out of watching [...]
