With Latest $200M Round Pinterest On Path Toward IPO

pinterest-money-600 How could Pinterest be valued at $5 billion if it has so little revenue? That's the question many incredulous journalists are asking after news yesterday that the "scrapbooking" site had raised another $200 million, bring its total funding to $764 million. The site only recently launched its first ad units, promoted pins. However the company is asking for and reportedly getting commitments of $1 and $2 million with CPMs of $30 to $40. One of the likely uses of the new funding is for continued international expansion. The company has offices in Europe and Japan, but is customized fo [...]

Report: 92 Percent Of Pinterest Pins Made By Women

Pinterest Pinterest has a nearly $4 billion valuation. It would be a very likely Yahoo acquisition candidate but for that huge valuation (and its own potential IPO aspirations). In its roughly four years of existence Pinterest has proven itself to be an extremely valuable social network, driving massive social sharing. It also has shown both its e-commerce potential and growing offline retail influence. But its most powerful attribute is undoubtedly its dedicated audience of overwhelmingly female pinners. Pinterest Gets Control Of 100 Domains, Wins $7.2 Million In Cybersquatting Case

pinterest-logo A federal judge ruled in Pinterest's favor this week, granting the company $7.2 million in damages and the control of 100 domains that were registered by a Chinese cybersquatter. Qian Jin, described in the judgment as a "serial cybersquatter" that owns hundreds of domains similar to the names of large companies, registered domains such as pinterests.com, pimterest.com and pinterost.com "after Pinterest.com and the PIN mark gained fame and began attracting visitors," the judgment says. The judge determined that this constituted "willful" infringement and said that "the association of defe [...]

Pinterest “Turning Pinners Into Shoppers” With Price-Drop Alerts

pinterest-featured This morning, Pinterest introduced price-drop notifications on pinned items. The company will now send an email when prices on user-pinned items decline. Pinners will automatically get these price alerts without configuring anything. They'll be grouped into a single email; however users can adjust settings to change their frequency. The new price-drop alerts build on the earlier introduction of "rich" product pins. Pinterest says there are already millions of product pins on the site since being introduced earlier this year. Beyond delivering information many will appreciate, the [...]

Pinterest Announces Support For Do-Not-Track

pinterest-logo Buried in a post about greater, coming personalization on Pinterest is a statement that says if consumers don't want the tracking they can opt-out. The company supports Do-Not-Track (DNT): We’re excited to give everyone a more personalized experience, but we also understand if you’re not interested! We support Do Not Track, and you can change your account settings anytime. The New York Times points out that after Twitter (in May 2012), Pinterest is the next major player on a very short list of Internet brands to support DNT. Microsoft (with IE 10), Chrome and Mozilla are all supporters o [...]

Pinterest Introduces “Rich Pins” With More Content To Drive More Actions

pinterest-photos-featured In an effort to make its pins (images) more useful and actionable Pinterest is introducing more information into selected categories of pins: movies, products and recipes. These new "rich pins" provide additional background and information, depending on the category. After looking for some time this evening, I was unable to find any rich pins "in the wild." However, you can see what it looks like in a screenshot provided by the company (below). The additional information beneath the image is what's new. In the case of food/recipes, ingredients and cooking times are provided. Product pins [...]

Pinterest Takes On Two Domain Fights: Pinterest.info & Amazon’s .pin Request

pinterest-logo Domain Name Wire is reporting that Pinterest has gotten involved in two separate domain-related fights: one over an existing domain registration and another over Amazon's plans to create a new generic top-level domain (gTLD). Firstly, Pinterest has formally objected to Amazon's request to own a new .pin domain. That's one of 75 new domains that Amazon applied for in ICANN's ongoing expansion of the top-level domain space. Barnes & Noble and a couple authors' groups have also objected to some of Amazon's other domain applications. Secondly, Domain Name Wire also reports that Pinterest [...]

Pinterest Buys Local Recommendations App Livestar For Talent

pinterest-logo Pinterest has confirmed its purchase of Livestar, a mobile/local recommendations app -- but the purchase is about the team of engineers more than the service itself. In an email, a Pinterest spokesperson tells us: We think the Livestar team is a natural fit for Pinterest because of their commitment to inspiring people to do things in their everyday lives through social and expert recommendations. The Livestar engineering team will be joining Pinterest in the coming weeks. CEO and founder Fritz Lanman will not be joining the team, but he will continue to advise Pinterest. As for Livesta [...]

Pinterest Lands Another $200 Million In Funding

pinterest-logo Pinterest has secured another round of funding, this one to the tune of $200 million. It values the image-based social network at $2.5 billion. AllThingsD broke the news this afternoon, and received this confirmation statement from Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann: "Our focus is on helping millions of people discover things they love and get inspiration to go do those things in their life. This investment gives us more resources to help realize that vision." Pinterest recently completed its first acquisition with the January purchase of Punchfork, a popular recipe site. That was, no doub [...]

Pinterest Makes First Acquisition By Scooping Up Recipe Discovery Site Punchfork

pinterest-money-featured Pinterest is now officially in the business of acquisitions. Punchfork, a popular recipe discovery site, has officially been acquired by Pinterest. Punchfork acts and looks similar to Pinterest, but actually pulls more content onto pages specifically around each recipe. According to the official announcement, the Punchfork team will be joining the Pinterest team in their San Francisco headquarters. The Punchfork site, API and mobile apps will be retired as Pinterest will essentially be closing the doors on Punchfork. No price for the acquisition has been disclosed. It will be [...]

Pinterest Hires Away A Google Attorney To Start Its Own Legal Department

pinterest-legal-featured Although the legal questions that dogged Pinterest earlier this year appear to have died down to some degree, the company has hired away one of Google's attorneys to start its own legal department. Michael Yang will begin as Pinterest's General Counsel on June 18, a company spokesperson tells us. He's their first internal attorney; Pinterest has been working with outside counsel to date. Business Insider reported the hiring earlier, saying that today is Yang's last day at Google. While at Google, Yang's duties included counseling product teams on privacy, copyright and other issues durin [...]

Pinterest Gets $100M In Funding From Japan’s Rakuten, Now Valued at $1.5 Billion

pinterest-money-featured The 3rd largest social networking site, Pinterest, has pinned down a lead investor in their highly contested round of funding according to AllThingsD.  The Japansese e-commerce company, Rakuten, will invest "upwards of $50 million in a $100 million round."  This total investment round will place the valuation of Pinterest at $1.5 billion dollars. The partnership makes sense from an offerings and from a global expansion standpoint.  Pinterest has stopped leveraging affiliate links for revenue and moving forward with commerce on the site is a logical next step.  With the global expansion, [...]

Pinterest Drops Skimlinks, Might Try Ads; Says Copyright Issues Not A Significant Issue Yet

pinterest-logo Pinterest has stopped using Skimlinks to monetize some of the "pins" that its users were publishing on the site and, in other news, the company also says that copyright issues haven't been a "significent issue" to date. Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann has been making the rounds a bit this week ("finally," some would say) and discussing some of the issues that have come up in light of the site's stunning recent growth. Silbermann contacted Josh Davis of LL Social, the site that helped spread the news about Pinterest adding affiliate links (via Skimlinks) to some of the content that users po [...]

Skimlinks Downplays Pinterest’s Affiliate Link Practice

pinterest-photos-featured Pinterest is quietly earning affiliate commission off of some images that its users "pin" on the site and, while some users are getting vocal about the practice, the company whose technology makes it possible says it's not a big deal. That company is Skimlinks, and in a blog post today, co-founder Alicia Navarro calls what Pinterest is doing "a very popular, mainstream, and valuable approach to content monetization." Online communities need ways to generate revenue to support their operations, and the preference is always to earn this revenue without disrupting their users or detracting [...]
