FTC: Brand-Incentivized Pins On Pinterest Potentially “Deceptive,” Require Disclosure

Cole Haan Eric Goldman alerted us this weekend (via Twitter) to an FTC ruling that may have a significant impact on the way that brands interact with users on Pinterest. The FTC determined (see embedded letter below) that a Cole Haan "Wandering Sole" contest that asked users to pin/re-pin images of Cole Haan products in exchange for a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree "violated Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act, 15 U.S.C. § 45." That section protects consumers against "Unfair or Deceptive Acts or Practices." It's also the section used to compel advertising or product-endorsement dis [...]

The ads have been tested on both the web and Pinterest’s mobile apps in search results and catego [...]

Pinterest Gets Tough On Contest Rules By Adding New Language To Its Acceptable Use Policy

pinterest-legal-featured After including a complete set of "Dos and Don'ts" for contests on its Brand Guidelines page in May, Pinterest has taken further action to enforce its contest rules by updating its Acceptable Use Policy this week. According to a blog post on the social media's Business Blog: A few months ago, we updated our contest guidelines to reflect what we’d learned about how contests affect the Pinner experience. We’re now adding these guidelines to our Acceptable Use Policy. That means that, moving forward, we won’t allow contests that: Suggest that Pinterest sponsors or endorses them or t [...]

Pinterest “Promoted Pin” Ads Debut Today

pinterest-promoted-pins-featured Promoted Pins, the first true ad product on Pinterest, started rolling out today. The company announced it had begun testing Promoted Pins three weeks ago. The ads are distinguished from organic pins by a subtle "Promoted Pin" tag and information icon, as shown in the screenshot below. Promoted Pins can be seen on both the web and Pinterest's mobile apps in search results and category feeds. Ads are served based on contextual relevancy. For example, a search for "Camping" could produce the Promoted Pin for a camping lantern shown above. For now, the company is wading cautiously into a [...]

Pinterest “Turning Pinners Into Shoppers” With Price-Drop Alerts

pinterest-featured This morning, Pinterest introduced price-drop notifications on pinned items. The company will now send an email when prices on user-pinned items decline. Pinners will automatically get these price alerts without configuring anything. They'll be grouped into a single email; however users can adjust settings to change their frequency. The new price-drop alerts build on the earlier introduction of "rich" product pins. Pinterest says there are already millions of product pins on the site since being introduced earlier this year. Beyond delivering information many will appreciate, the [...]

Planning A Pinterest Contest? Don’t Forget One Pin Is Plenty

pinterest-logo-220 In an attempt to keep marketers from diluting Pinterest's core value of quality over quantity, the image-focused social media site updated contest guidelines earlier this year, adding a list of "Dos" and "Don'ts" for brands wanting to host Pinterest contests. Pinterest's compliance language makes it clear that they are in no way responsible for any promotions hosted on their site, and any brand holding a Pinterest contest must comply with all legal requirements. The list of "Dos" and "Don'ts" offered on Pinterest's Brand Guidelines page give marketers a standard set of rules to follow wh [...]

Your Links On Pinterest May Be Stopping Traffic In Its Tracks

Pinterest suspicious link warning when using shortened URL Pinterest has been considered a top traffic driver for many sites, most recently showing its marketing clout by launching Pinterest Web Analytics. But, clicking on an image isn’t the slam-dunk traffic driver as it may seem. And, adding a shortened link to the caption of a pin may be stopping potential traffic in its tracks. If you spend any time on Pinterest, you’ll know that clicking on a pin only brings you to an image, and as a user, you need to click twice in order to get to the original source. Here at Marketing Land, we've been doing some Pinterest testing over the last few weeks, [...]

blue-hashtag-200px According to a recent mobile hashtag survey by RadiumOne, 58 percent of respondents said they use hashtags on a regular basis, and 70 percent of the hashtag users are doing so from their mobile device. dec_feature More than just a social hub to share images, Pinterest has become a lifestyle brand itself. Exuding a feeling of simple, clean, nearly dreamy -- dare I say aspirational -- moments of pleasure, it's actually influencing a new aesthetic style. In fact, one of the common complaints is how spellbinding the Pinterest experience becomes as users spend hours upon hours exploring content and seeking out new curators of style, inspiration and taste. Adopted primarily by women and at an astounding pace (at this rate there’ll soon be more people with Pinterest accounts than toothbrushes), it’s an [...]
