mobile-payment-wallet-featured In its latest round of reports, Custora claims mobile e-commerce revenue is set to reach $50 billion by the end of this year, up nearly $8 billion since last year, and an astounding $48 billion since 2010. Analyzing e-commerce data from more than 100 retailers, 70 million consumers and $10 billion in transactions, Custora found mobile traffic to e-commerce sites has increased from three-percent to nearly 37 percent in the last four years, while mobile e-commerce revenue climbed from $2.2 billion in 2010 to $42.8 billion last year. Custora's numbers prove mobile devices continue to take a [...]

Samsung Shows How Devices And Data Will Give Birth To “Personal Health Optimization”

Simband Samsung We're used to hearing about new devices from Samsung. But today, the Korean company was in San Francisco to preview something slightly different: a major new digital health push. Called "The Samsung Digital Health Initiative," it's a mix of hardware, software and partnerships. Samsung promises that it will "accelerate the development of advanced sensors, algorithms, and data collection and analysis." There were two major components of Samsung's announcement. The first is "Simband," an "open hardware" reference design that is essentially a modular collection of biometric sensors that cou [...]

What To Expect And How To Prepare As The U.S. Mobile Landscape Matures

mobile-video-tablet-600 Marketers of late have been inundated with the idea of the proverbial rising tide of mobile. But by mid-2014, this idea, while still certainly still ringing true for many emerging or developing markets, has largely run its course within the U.S. The tide rose, we're standing waist deep, and, as the landscape steadies, the short-term shifts have become less dramatic. To get away from the analogies, both the domestic smartphone and tablet markets have largely reached maturity, and more subtle shifts in computing behavior are now on the horizon. Consider that for U.S. markets, analysts h [...]

Patent Verdict: Apple Wins The Round But Fails To Land A Blow Vs. Samsung

apple-google-featured You have to wonder what Apple and its lawyers are now thinking. Last Friday's patent victory did almost nothing for the company and nothing to deter or stop the momentum of chief rival Samsung. After a hard fought and widely publicized trial, Apple extracted a jury verdict of just $119 million against the Korean company. It's a far cry from the roughly $2 billion Apple was seeking. As a financial penalty it's trivial; as a "moral victory" there may be some satisfaction there -- but not much. Apple won roughly $1 billion in damages -- a landmark in patent litigation -- from Samsung last J [...]

Second Apple Patent Suit Vs. Samsung Ropes In Google

apple-google-featured If you're tired of news about smartphone-related patent litigation, you're not alone. However, there's more to come as Apple and Samsung's long-running patent feud appears no closer to resolution today than it was two years ago. The parties return to court this week for another round of patent-for-tat. The new case presents five Apple claims against Samsung and two counterclaims against Apple. Among the Apple claims against Samsung are "slide to unlock" and "tap to search" (on a map) or call a phone number. The damages sought by each side are curiously unbalanced. Apple wants a $40 roya [...]

Motorola, LG, Fossil First Brands To Launch Android Wear

Moto 360 watch Shortly after Google announced Android Wear this morning, Motorola, Fossil and LG came out with their own associated announcements. Engadget reports that LG's "G Watch" (presumably for Google) will arrive next quarter and be aggressively priced. Motorola, which was just sold by Google to Lenovo, is launching a watch called Motorola 360 (see video below). Of the two it appears to be the more interesting one -- because it's round faced. However Motorola says "Moto 360 will be available in a variety of styles globally," so there will probably also be rectangles. Fossil is also an early Andr [...]

Samsung Devices Driving Almost 60 Percent Of Android Traffic

Galaxy S5 Samsung overwhelmingly dominates North American Android traffic, according to new data from Chitika. The findings are based on "tens of millions of U.S. and Canadian Android-based online ad impressions" from February.  Chitika looked at all Android devices (tablets and smartphones) on its network and found that the Korean company has a 55.5 percent traffic share. Amazon's Kindle devices are second with an 8.2 share. However Chitika says that Kindle growth has stalled and that Google is the only company outside Samsung that saw Android traffic growth since Q4. Looking at the breakdo [...]

Android Tablets: 62 Pct. Of Sales But Only 23 Pct. Of Traffic

android-featured Gartner released new estimates of 2013 tablet sales on a global basis. The firm said that Android saw its market share go from 46 percent in 2012 to 62 percent last year. Apple's share fell from 53 percent to 36 percent accordingly. As with the smartphone market in the US and selected other markets, Apple remains the single largest individual vendor. Yet again, very strangely, Android shipments and alleged market share don't line up with actual internet traffic figures. Below are data from StatCounter that reflect global internet traffic from tablets. Unless the StatCounter da [...]

Ellen Was On Stage At Oscars With Samsung, Backstage With iPhone

Samsung's a big sponsor of the Oscars, to the degree that it even had this year's host Ellen DeGeneres doing a record-breaking star-studded selfie with a Galaxy phone. But behind the scenes, there's an iPhone being used. Ellen kicked off the Oscars in her monologue saying that she'd be tweeting during the show and then took a selfie. Then she did another selfie later in the show, surrounded by Hollywood's finest -- one that set a new retweet record. Both of those were shot with a Samsung, a big Oscars advertiser. Ellen never mentioned Samsung, but it was clear she was using a Samsung p [...]

Samsung Galaxy S5 Offers Upgrades But May Not Excite

Galaxy S5 At a Mobile World Congress press event today, Samsung unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, two new smartwatches and a fitness wristband. The new S5 outmuscles the iPhone 5S in terms of specs but it doesn't appear significantly different than its predecessor from a design standpoint. It's a solid improvement over the S4 though it may not electrify smartphone buyers. The same was said about the iPhone 5S, which sold extremely well in Q4. The iPhone 6 is supposed to be announced this summer and released in the fall. We're not in Barcelona and have not had "hands-on" time [...]

As LG, HTC Prep Smartwatches, Samsung Ditches Android On Its New “Gear” Devices

Glam_Gear 2 1 [caption id="attachment_75011" align="alignright" width="212"] Credit: Samsung[/caption] Samsung's Galaxy Gear device was the most visible of this group of "1.0" smartwatches. However it was rushed to market (to beat Apple) and generally panned by reviews. Simultaneously too ambitious and not ambitious enough, in terms of user experience and design, many were sold but it fell dramatically short of expectations. Galaxy Gear sought, perhaps too expansively, to be a new computing platform for mobile developers. The new generation of Samsung's smartwatch is called simply called "Gear," ditc [...]

Galaxy S3 And 10″ Tablets Dominate Samsung-Android Traffic

Galaxy S3 Android is the world's dominant smartphone operating system; and Samsung is the dominant Android handset maker. In North America the Samsung devices that generate the most traffic are the Galaxy S3 handset and the 10-inch Galaxy tablet. These data come from ad network Chitika, which analyzed "tens of millions of [North American] Samsung smartphone- and tablet-based online ad impressions" in December. According to the Chitika data, the Galaxy S3 generates a full third of Samsung-Android handset traffic. That's followed by the Galaxy S4, roughly 10 points behind. North American Samsung-An [...]

Study: Mobile Site Performance Drives Customer Satisfaction Over Premium Content

shutterstock_68911843-mobilecheck A new customer satisfaction report from ForeSee, focusing on media and entertainment mobile websites and apps, revealed that a site's mobile performance drives customer satisfaction more so than premium content. According to the study, "While mobile users want the newest releases and latest functions, the main driver of satisfaction for streaming mobile sites and apps is actually performance - how quickly the pages load and the ability to load without error messages." The study also discovered that customers prefer to view media and entertainment sites and apps on their mobile devices ov [...]

Apple Remains Most Valuable Brand, While Facebook Falls & Yahoo Returns To Top 100 [Brandz]

brandz-top-100 Apple is once again listed as the most valuable brand on earth, while Google inched closer to the top spot and Microsoft fell out of the top five in the 2013 Brandz Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands. This is the eighth year that Brandz has compiled its list, which comes from research involving two million consumers and more than 10,000 brands, the company says. Apple tops the list again this year, with Google moving up from third place to second. Microsoft was ranked fifth last year, but fell to seventh this time around. IBM, at No. 3, is the fourth technology company in the top 10. [...]

smartphones-600px In a new report from Gartner, the only global market to experience mobile phone sales growth during Q1 2013 was the Asia/Pacific region, demonstrating a 6.4 percent increase year-on-year. This growth rate accounted for a 53.1 percent year-on-year increase in Asia/Pacific's share of mobile phones globally. China witnessed a 7.5 percent increase last quarter compared to Q1 2012, and accounted for 25.7 percent of all global mobile phone sales. "The Chinese and local manufacturers have been exemplary at addressing the demands of buyers by offering affordable devices with optimum features," claim [...]

Samsung Introduces Galaxy S4 With Nary A Mention Of Android Or Google

samsung-galaxy-s4-featured At a Broadway-style premiere this evening at New York's Radio City Musical Hall, Samsung unveiled its heavily anticipated Galaxy S4 handset. The event had the hype and production values of an Apple product launch. But, what barely seemed in attendance was any idea that the S4 is an Android phone or contains Google services. Samsung obviously spent a great deal of money on the show. Parts of it were awkward and many of the scripted jokes fell flat. But, the phone is sure to be a hit. The new S4 looks very much like the Galaxy S III (I watched the live stream and haven't held it in my hand [...]

Samsung Launches The Galaxy S4

Galaxy S4 Samsung formally unveiled the latest in its Galaxy S line-up of smartphones, the Galaxy S4 (or officially, the Galaxy S 4). The phone features a 5" screen without getting larger than the Galaxy S3 plus an array of features that seemingly put Samsung's own brand ahead of Google and Android. For more about the lack of Google in today's announcement, see our separate story: Samsung Introduces Galaxy S4 With Nary A Mention Of Android Or Google. As for the phone itself, you'll find the formal rundown below. Even further below, you'll find our live blogging coverage. The Specs Samsung said [...]
